Hey Chris, i saw it last week or week before and i didnt think it was as good as people are saying. Too many little sub plots and not enough interesting characters. Chewie wasnt used enough and they killed han off last movie and he was my favourite besides darth vader and chewie.

The stormtroopers were great as was seeing the walkers from the early movies. Cool seeing yoda too. I thought the new mercenary type character they introduced was interesting.

I wont give up more spoilers but ending couldve been more suspenseful and the death of one main character was pointless.

As a movie it was great but as a star wars franchise installment, it didnt measure up to the first star wars or return of the jedi which are best imo. We will see how they go with continuity in the next installment if they dont jump ahead or go back 100 years ...

As a side note. Im sick of seeing these characters that exist soley for merchandising reasons like those bird things on the island or like the dancing baby groot in gaurdians of the galaxy 2. Bird things werent so bad i guess..

Well said YB.
I think the cross merchandising is becoming really annoying.
There were a few characters who I questioned what their purpose was and yes the death of a lead and central character was wasted.

Not going to see it at the movies I'm gonna wait, I heard it goes for far to long and the plot is a bit here there and everywhere.

Hey Chris, the merch has come a long way since the tiny little merch stand they had set up when we saw the first Star Wars. It seems more important than the quality of the movies these days!

Yeah i was gonna wait it out but the wife and brother in law were going anyway. The cgi is good on the big screen.

Oh and i think empire strikes back may be the best of the series...

Might see it one day.
I have heard its 'control-the-narrative' propaganda designed to present white males as villains and women as the leaders.

Having studied propaganda techniques and deep-conscious marketing techniques used and developed by the film and television industry, I find it hard to watch most Hollywierd movies. The subliminal tricks used not only direct your feelings towards characters, etc, they also literally program your brain/mind via rewiring of the neural networks.

The industry has come a very long way since the simple subliminal in the 'white v black hat' westerns of the forties. The emotions and thoughts they can stir these days is scary, and I'm aware of it happening, most are too far engrossed in the 'story' the 'real messages' go direct into the subconscious without resistance and while the mind is in the 'alpha state'... where it is extremely vulnerable.

I don’t know if I am niaev or if Wolf is paranoid, subliminal messages about female leaders?? Maybe they are just continuing on with the leadership from Princess Leia back in the early movies.

Are females going to have to cop whinging every time we have a strong female role in a movie. Most of us don’t winge when it is a male lead.

Would like to see it, love the older movies, I thought the last one was a little bland though.

Thank you, Zed.

I haven't seen the last three Star Wars movies as the second trio (Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith) which were made after the original and best trilogy (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi), were OK, but I couldn't stand Jake Lloyd's acting as the young Luke, nor Hayden Christensen's as young adult Luke, and that horrible Jar Jar Binks just irritated the hell out of me. I decided not to see the last lot of films, and even though I haven't, just being on the internet means I've seen snippets of the movies and discussions of same, and unless I am really bored, I probably won't bother. I've decided I'd rather leave off watching than end up disappointed.

In answer, find me one white male 'hero' from this movie?

Even the great Luke Skywalker is relegated to a hermit hiding from the galaxy because he f*ked up the training of Han's kid... completely against his original character's ethos and strength in the force.

And in the last one, Han himself was a f*kup who could not keep his relationship together and messed up being a father so bad his son turned to the dark side and killed him.

As to 'strong' female leads... they are the 'heros' in countless movies now, but not as 'females'... rather they are portrayed as pseudo-males, with typically male characteristics, not feminine ones (violent killers and warriors).

Show me just one strong 'female' character in Hollywierd movies?

Thanks Wolf and Shazzoir for your comments, I agree with you Shazzoir, the original first theee movies can’t be beaten. They truly entertained and gave us loveable characters I will never forget.

The follow up movies are so boring, I can’t even remember the storyline or the characters. I watched the link you put in Wolf, I guess if you take the movies seriously, then his points are valid if you really want to apply them.

On a different topic, has anybody watched “Terror in the Woods” true eye witness accounts of Bigfoot encounters etc. I just discovered it on Daily Motion, I love it

I haven't seen this one yet but I will do when it's on DVD.

I liked Rogue One, but it was a prequel and any long time fan could see directly where it was heading (which was sort of its purpose).

I think people of my age (46) have to accept that we're not the target audience any more. I was six when I saw the first Star Wars movie and nine when I saw The Empire Strikes Back. By the time I was twelve and I saw Return Of The Jedi, the Ewoks looked like a blatant attempt to sell toys to kids so I was clearly past the age that George Lucas had chosen for his (lucrative) target audience.

If kids like it then it's succeeded. It's entertainment, nothing more.

I dislike the prequels because they were clunky and weird, and they sort of revealed the 'Emperor's new clothes' - George Lucas is a great ideas man and a brilliant marketing strategist, but he's a terrible director and an even worse scriptwriter. I think the success of the original three movies was largely due to Lucas' use of merchandising (all those films are perfectly engineered examples of product placement - every character and vehicle and monster in those movies was made into a toy kids could buy), and the fact that he had some brilliant people around him who wanted him to succeed because they liked him and supported him. Just my opinion, but the ones Lucas had the most to do with were the ones that turned out to be the least watchable.

I was waiting/hoping for someone to suggest Ripley... well done.

As an Alien franchise fan (for the first two anyway) I actually liked the second far more than any other sequels. Historically it is significant as well, presenting a female lead that is strong yet shows very female traits (mother defending her young in the form of the little girl survivor she 'adopts').

Some film aficionados have said Sarah Conner in Terminator was the first strong female lead but I would argue Ripley is better as an example for the 'motherly' traits she shows. Sadly, female lead roles seem to have gone downhill since... basically just violent men with boobs and very few if any traits that make a female what she is.

(Disclaimer: This next bit may ruffle some feathers but hear me out)
I find it comparable to the corporate world. Women have 'been let in' (although sadly most still receive less pay than male counterparts) to this traditionally male dominated world, but not as 'women'... Instead females are forced to compete like men.

It is my belief (my wife agrees) that females are pre-disposed for cooperation, not competition (a male 'trait'). Men naturally are competitive in comparison and when a female enters the competitive world of the corporation they are forced to compete instead of cooperate. This 'unnatural' behaviour tends to confuse both men and women in the space and leads to 'unnatural' traits... severe bitchiness, extreme power tripping, etc.

Whereas with men, they naturally compete, as is their nature, but do so with a natural-born respect for their competitors. Because women do not as a rule 'naturally' compete, the respect is rarely there. As a result, out of this confusion against their natural instincts, women can tend to fall into the 'ego', 'power-trip' trap more readily than men (of course I am generalising here, the issue is far more complex than a few paragraphs in a forum will allow).

Yes the way the characters were constructed for the Last Jedi was terrible.
Without inserting spoilers into this thread, I walked out at the end of the movie thinking what the hell just happened. Who approved this script and why didn't anyone step and say something or at least do a quality check? I was disappointed to the max and obviously knowing it just a movie is fine but for many its a connection with their childhood, beliefs and role models. To see it so blatantly chopped up and disgarded is beyond shameful. If its aimed at a younger generation I highly doubt they will connect in the same way that todays older generation will. I would even go as far to say that they will connect more with the original trilogy and the characters like Luke, Han and Leia.

The Aliens connection is also a great comparison.
I think although the original movies were hard to beat, they are at least keeping the flame going with some storyline and decent acting.

I think it's that the original three movies were made during an era when directors were given a lot more freedom and were seen as 'artists' of a sort. Studios might have insisted on making sure big name actors were featured and argued about costs and the like, but directors weren't seen as corporate 'key creatives' then, they were usually mavericks or misfits who were naturally combative and uncompromising personalities. Those films were also made before the concept of political correctness was as pervasive as it is now.

Also, there was no online fandom who'd instantly react to the slightest rumour about upcoming movies so there'd virtually be no info to go on until you saw the actual movie for yourself. There was no instant online consensus about anything so you had zero expectations beyond the fact that you were going to see a new Star Wars movie.

The thing that I missed the most in the 'prequels' was the sense of easygoing humour that was so much a part of the original movies. There was no banter between the Jedi as there'd been amongst Han, Luke, Leia and C3-PO. No one smiled or spoke or behaved like a normal person you could relate to. It was all very obtuse and stilted and I think Lucas was surrounded by well paid yes-men telling him he was a genius instead of the genuinely talented supporters who'd been there for him back in the 70's and 80's and who'd tell him what they really thought.

Very true. Disney will eventually grind this whole franchise into insignificance as they've done with every property they've ever hoovered up under their corporate umbrella.

Not a single thing they've acquired the rights to - from Cinderella to Winnie The Pooh - has ever remained true to its origins and everything gets 'Disneyfied' in short order.

Once they've finally acquired DC Comics (and no one can convince me they're not working on it) Disney will be a monopoly unlike any other in history, effectively owning modern day folklore in a way no other corporation or commercial enterprise ever has.

I guess people will have to invent new folklore to replace the Disney version of 'childhood wonder' TM which they'll be trying to sell to everyone's kids (along with the official poster and doona cover set for each of their lucrative franchises).

Movies, pop stars and celebrities are setting a terrible example for kids. They always have but its out of control these days.

What shits me is how these celebrities are so crass and act like role models at the same time. No one is being themselves anymore. Its affecting everyone.

The human race is becoming dumber each day. We dont even care if were being monitored with all these permissions on our phones and computers.

We cant communicate anymore and are becoming souless.

Yep, I've been watching this INTENTIONAL dumbing down unfold for decades.

Read Edward Bernaise, listen to Allan Watt (the Irishman, not the 60's guru, though he is very good too)... it is intentional. To mainatain control over the masses, they use bread and circuses to distract and brainwash, dividing groups up so they battle each other instead of uniting and removing the corruption.

They had perfected the use of mind control via tv, movies, etc decades ago. What you see today is arrogance. I find it hard to watch a Hollywierd movie and get into it, because I see the very powerful sub-conscious manipulation going on in every shot, every angle, every cut, every note. I have been studying these techniques since I was 15 and they are very scary to watch how powerful they are.

Derren Brown has many excellent videos demonstrating them. In one he even convinces a man to be an assassin.
