I might have finally got eyes on

Unread post by Thumper »

Hi Ladies and Gents,
About 18 months ago I went out to the Pilliga and did some research. At that time the entire region was parched in the extreme. By staying close to the few wet spots I was successful in finding a big footprint and hearing wood knocks from two different locations. one in the Pilliga itself at a puddle on the side of the road and one set of knocks near Narrabri.
So I’ve previously had good success with my research but never got eyes on as both wood knocks were coming from in dense foliage.

Anyway on this last weekend I went back to the Pilliga puddle on the side of the dirt road, (where I saw the footprint and heard the woodknock). I scoped it out in the afternoon, saw there was still water in the puddle, went into Coonabarabran for dinner then went back at dusk.
Sure enough the wallabies were hanging around the puddle which in my mind confirmed that this puddle was a significant water source in st least this area.

Drum roll please....
As I was standing on the road next to the puddle staring into the bush (at this point the light is fading but I can still make things out pretty well) kind of in my not quite peripheral not quite focal area I see a big dark shape step between some trees. It felt like it realised I was looking in it’s direction and it quickly need to adjust position. Using the size of the wallabies are reference this thing would have had the mass of at least 10 wallabies and be 5 or 6 times the height. I know sizing a yowie in units of wallabies is odd but judging distance and size in the fading light was difficult to say the least. And yeah there was no f'n way I was going to pace out the distance for you all.
A few moments after this I saw something move between two trees on the ridge line where it was silhouetted by the sunset. This was in the same direction as the previous movement. My impression was that they/it was waiting for dark to get a drink, but when I showed up and spoiled that plan it moved off over the ridge to another water source. Which is in contrast to what happened last time where I and the yowies ended up in a standoff at the puddle, probably because they had no other water to go to.

Anyway, did I definitely see a yowie? No. Just a big dark shape. Will this convince anyone of anything? Of course not.
But I’m quietly pleased with my achievement and wanted to share.
I don’t have much time in the bush research experience, but these years armchair research studying what everyone else is doing was excellent preparation for the small amount of hours i do get out there.
I don’t have anyone to talk to in real life about this so thanks for reading.

My next goal is to actually get eyes on a yowie that I can identify to myself as being such. Which me luck with that.

Actually, not wallabies. I don’t know why I said that. There were the smaller kangaroos. The dark shape was 5 small kangaroos high.

Heard some not so good stuff about yowie activity in the Pilliga. Stories regarding their aggressiveness in the area plus earlier reports of hunters that have gone missing (e.g., pig/goat hunters etc). Not sure of the accuracy of the reports, but probably prudent to keep your wits, be prepared and stay safe.

I know. I was never more than 50 meters from my truck. And as matter of fact never really left the road. There’s no way I would actually go into the bush out there.
Once you’re initiated to their existence the bush doesn’t feel safe at all.

Do these creatures kill humans I believe on occasions they have done so? They seem to detest guns but who would go into places such as the Piliga night or day without carrying one and alone?

I remember a story by Dean Harrison I think about a group of Canadian tourists in 1974 who wanted to experience an outback adventure. They set out on horseback with a tour guide about four of them altogether.
One of the horses reared and shied at something in the scrub and the rider was thrown and ended up with a crushed leg he couldn't get back in the saddle so the guide decided to set out for help but when he never returned the other two made a decision to seek assistance. Alarmingly they left the guy there overnight with five rounds of ammunition a gun and a tent vowing to return in the morning.

When the rescue party returned they discovered the tent had been shredded and human body parts including an arm strewn around the camp.

The moral of this story is do not venture out on your own and do not believe Yowies to be benevolent, harmless creatures.

Hey thumper
Good work mate having that stuff happen just makes you want to know more about wats going on and for you to go back to that spot and seeing something is great
I dunno about you but i think it would be a bit creeper seeing the large dark shape then being able to 100% see it was a yowie

Senses yer i remember that one im sure he talked about it on the paranormal portal that would of been crazy

My pop use to drive trucks all up around there and when i recorded the roars in the bush he said straight away it reminded him about the story he herd from a truck driver up there about a stock truck driver stopping for a sleep and waking up to something smashing into the side of the truck trying to get the cows eventually the truck got knocked over alot of cows died and a few were missing

Iv herd alot of reports that the yowie are nasty up there but dont let that turn you off thumper just always keep your wits about u

Thanks for sharing mate good to see more people getting out and not being afraid to share
Cheers

I’m not naive about it. I do believe they are dangerous. It is basically a calculated risk that I take. Stick to the road, drive up (noisy) and don’t surprise or corner anything. Don’t stick around too long like a bad guest etc etc etc.
Unless you’re a quick fire specialist I don’t know what a gun is going to do. By the time you realise you’re in a confrontation it has already closed the distance and ripped your head off. Beside that I don’t own a gun. And it seems to be received wisdom that carrying one is a sure fire way to not see anything at all.

I haven’t heard that 1974 story. Do you have a link?

For the avoidance of doubt. I don’t mean to imply I saw a shadow being or anything like that. I mean I saw a big dark something moving in the trees. It was dusk and whatever it was was indeterminant.
Thanks for you kind comments!

Yer mate i new wat you ment
Im more meaning the creepy side of still not knowing what they look like or anything with the stuff iv had happen to me i think id be less worried if i seen 1 and could make out a face, size, fur all that sorta stuff

Iv got some pics of something that was following me that u can see a face when u zoom in on the pics
But in person i could just see something black where the thing stopped
I seen 1 in a tree 1 morning but not from close enough that i new wat it was only the fact that when i went past the same tree 10 mins later and the thing that was in the tree that would if been wider then i can stretch my arms was no longer there

That stuff i recon creeps me out more then if i seen 1 close up enough i could give a full description of the thing
