What power binoculars - 8x or 10x ?

Just wondering about weight and whether 10x binos are too long and would get in the way. I know Dean had a spotting scope. Is that advisable too or just too much for long treks?

I'm trying to determine what binocular zoom to get as well. I've got x12 binoculars but I think they're too powerful. I'm finding that while holding, x12 is difficult to keep steady. Probably have to go weaker. I did have a nice spotting scope but gave it as a Xmas present a couple of years ago before I really got into this subject. Now that I'm yowie field researching I regret giving it away particularly given she who I gave it to doesn't really use it.

Thanks for the reply. Yes a spotting scope is quite a straight forward configuration though not stereo. I have a small bak4 -type monocular which weighs next to nothing. Still tempted to take that on my next mission on it's own but i also bought both 10x42 (Nikon Prostaff 5s) and 8x42 (Nikon Monarch 5 - cheapest of premier range) after the 10x42 i deemed a bit too awkward & bulky for roaming far but the weight difference isn't big big though certainly helpful. The Monarchs have such good glass it is almost as bright. More detail but it is heavier on the eyes - the Prostaff 10X42 are still a luxury in themselves to use as it's a bit like VR goggles. A different experience compared with smaller apertures we're mostly used to. The colours aren't as rich and are perhaps more neutral. If would only go on day excursions i would just get the 10x42.

10x42 certainly a more efficient viewing experience. One has to hunt about significantly more with the 8x42 pair.

G’day Bob, I use a pair of Swarovski 10x42. Awesome clear pic with a wide angle view. I always carry them when I go out hiking or hunting.
