Plesiosaur Sightings

It may surprise a lot people to hear about the extent of Plesiosaur sightings in the oceans around Australia. I have saved some newspaper clippings (shown below) from the daily press in the 80’s that state there have been over 40 reported sightings in south-west Victorian waters over the past few years.

One report by fisherman off Warrnambool said a 20 metre long animal kept pace with their fishing boat while it was under full power. They described it as having a large snake like head with a two foot thick neck, a motley coloured scaly body and two sets of flippers about 10 feet long.

There have also been many reports over the years of long necked creatures in the Hawkesbury River in NSW. It is thought these marine dwellers travel upriver from the ocean.

As these animals have probably been around for many thousands of years, it is not a huge stretch of the imagination to think some these river sightings could have contributed to the legend of the famous Bunyip.

Here's a couple more newspaper clippings on Plesiosaur sightings. The Darwin Police Sergeant encounter gets my attention. It was a long duration sighting (20 mins) and there were five witnesses.

I have read of sightings off Bribie Island & the mouth of the Caboolture River. I can't recall the dates I think it was in the '50s.
Every 10 yrs or so someone will see a 'crocodile' off the Bribie jetty. They're normally lambasted in the local paper and it's quickly forgotten.

You and i dont always agree on everything but with this particular topic I'm in 100 percent agreement.

I'm not much of a believer in monsters being in smaller lakes, but big lakes, lochs and the ocean i dont see why not. Coelacanth survived. Turtles and crocodile, shark and nautalus too. Why not other animals protected by the vastness of the oceans.

There are also a lot of sightings around new Zealand too.

Hi there monster maniacs! I haven’t done much posting of late but watching this episode of The Alaska Triangle has prodded me into action. Kodiak Island is situated in the Gulf of Alaska and is the second largest island in the U.S. One sighting is a sonar image of a Plesiosaur shaped creature resting on the bottom 330 feet down. It clearly shows a long neck, large body and long tail together with appendages that resemble fins. The local newspaper has published the picture.

Another fishing boat captain watched in amazement as his sonar showed a huge creature snapping up salmon. He said the animal was 40 fathoms below, plesiosaur shaped and was twice as long as his boat, making it around 80 feet in length! That’s a really big animal!

I dunno - these type of "documentaries" tend to be generally over-hyped, over-produced , over-scripted and over-long.

Ahhh... good to see our resident cynic Greg is alive and well. I wonder if he even watched the eyewitness interviews... Does he think they were all telling porkies?

Just like Yowie reports, the credibility of the witness and the way they relate their sighting goes a long way towards making their story believable. At the end of the day, it is always up to the viewer to decide if someone is speaking truthfully.

In this instance, I have done other research that puts a positive spin on these encounters.

It is an interesting topic that does not get much attention. Once upon a time a lot of the the unexplained mysteries type television shows always had Plesiosaur reports, etc. Definitely intrigued me during those younger years.

Glad you share an interest in the possible survival of descendents of ancient Plesiosaurs!

I personally place a lot of credence on the south western Victoria sightings as I grew up in the area and know first hand what sort of hard working seafarers those ocean fisherman are. My family knew many of them personally, something you would expect in small country towns. All just my opinion, of course...

My ‘other research’ is simply fact checking. Times, dates, locations, names and checking that the eye-witnesses are indeed real. In the past, I have even managed to contact people involved and exchanged emails about their sightings. Not so hard in the 21st Century.

Always had an interest.

I don't know why, but reading your posts I remembered something that occurred about forty years ago. Don't know why.

Not Cryptid but a very large wedge tailed eagle. Not far from Rockhampton, Queensland on a cattle property at a place we used to camp and shoot feral pigs, cats, rabbits, etc. On that property lived an eagle with a wing span longer than the length of a HR Holden utility. It was huge, everyone was scared of it. Never bothered humans but stock were fair game.

Unfortunately, someone shot it. No idea what happened to the carcass. Also, unfortunately there were no mobile phones back then to take a pic nor did we carry cameras. It was really huge.
