Best recording devices

Unread post by mikka »

Hey all,

Ive been trying to decide what type of recorder to buy and I was wondeing what you think .. there are good and bad points to both digital and basic tape recorders.

Digital.

Good Points.
They are easily copied and shared with mininal sound quality loss. A better overall sound recording quality.

Against.
They clip the higher and lower ends of the spectrum (though would be hard to pick up with the human ear I think). Price. Cant be easily tampered with.

Tape.
Good points.
Records the exact sound without and so called "clipping". Price

Against.
Loss of sound quality from tape everytime played back or copied.

I guess all it boils down to if you want the full spectrum of sounds recorded if your in the right place at the right time.

What are your thoughts ?

P.s. I also have a parabolic mic that Most of the time I would use to listen

Thanks

Mikka,
A lot depends on your budget.
If you have the funds i would go DAT .
The Parabolic Mic that Nigel & Jeannie have would
be my choice of Mics. A company that makes them is
http://www.silvercreekindustries.com
Another way is to check out Ornitholigical sites as
Ornthologists use this sort of equipment in the field.
A friend of mine and myself built one as a bit of an
experiment for field use from a kit and used a Sony
MD Recorder to record the sounds, it worked fairly
well. Nigel seen it when he came down to NSW for
for some field work with dean and others from this forum. Another thing get some sound software to clean
up your recordings.

I'm going to sound awful stupid here, but what is a parabolic mic? :?
I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside. Run. He's fuzzy. Get outta here.

It's an amazing toy ! The first time I used N&J's , I had so much fun walking the bush at night with no light at all ! It made the job so much easier and to sit and listen to every little sound ! Sounds you would just never of had heard with out it ! I guess it kind of felt like being a bat ! Being able to hear but no see ,but feel in total control !

Hi Chewy
Price for a para is about 500 aussie dollars.
Oz Spy at tingalpa is where we got ours.
Make.Bionic ear Silver creek industries Manitowoc Wisconsin.
Can get another form of device that works the same BUT you must be alone as it picks up everything around you were as this one only does sound where it is pointed.
They also sell night gear that is Gen.2 that sell for about 800 bucks and work well as a mate has a set we borrow...Small compact unit sits over one eye.
Chews the batteries but ..
Cheers

I've seen pics of it, it's a monster, a very.. appealing monster at that

mikka, a 1 gig flashcard? Man, that's not too bad. Could get a fair amount of sound on there, and it'd be encoded at a good quality too.
You can pick up 2 in to 1 out mic jacks from Dick Smith at about $5 i think.

Hi Nig&Jean

Thanks for that! 500 bucks doesnt sound that bad.
That other one you were talking about sounds pretty c**p though! Like you were saying, everytime you walk or you had someone with you, you would be picking up your own footsteps
I think I'll go with the para :)

Cheers
