Frankly meets Chewbacca

Unread post by Wolf »

Posted this on a Sasquatch forum in reply to a post about BF being described as Chewbacca and thought I might as well post it here too. I hope you guys and gals enjoy it:

The sight of the icebox made his stomach gurgle at the thought of its contents. The Hairless Ones would be all sleeping in their tent. This should be an easy raid. He might not even need to scare them.

A sharp intake of breath made him aware of something behind him and he spun around to face the threat, the hair raising on his neck in surprise and fear. But what stood there staring at him was not a hunter with a gun, it was a child. Wide-eyed, it stood frozen in the act of tying up its clothing after urinating.

It was very small and delicate, it’s skin much like the baby that his mother had entrusted to him a lifetime ago. It was wearing brightly coloured material that fitted loosely on its body. He recognised it as the strange clothing they often slept in to keep their hairless bodies warm.

Although he felt no danger from it in any way, its presence concerned him. He was expecting it to start screaming at any second, but it didn’t. Instead it just stood and stared, mouth open in shock. He didn’t know what to do. Should he run away? Should he growl at it to make it run away? But that might make it scream. The sky was getting steadily brighter now, if he scared it and it screamed, a bigger one might appear with a weapon. Should he kill it?

Nervously, he glanced at the tree line to judge the distance. The movement broke the spell and the small Hairless One moved. But instead of running off screaming, it finished doing up its pants with a little knot and put its hands on its hips, then cocked its head to make a strange sound, “Chewbacca?”

He froze.

Although he had often heard the Hairless Ones talking to each other, he had never had one speak to him… except to scream and run away.

He didn’t know what a Chewbacca was, but it was clearly a question. Maybe it was what the Hairless Ones called his kind.

He copied the sound, quietly, his deep voice rumbling across the small distance between them… CHEWBACCA.

It clapped its hands together and let out a flow of sounds, almost squealing them in excitement. The young Sasquatch dropped into a crouch at the sudden noise and glanced around, towards the camp. The squealing stopped as soon as he moved. No movement came from the tent. He turned back to the small Hairless One who was suddenly standing right next to his leg to peer around it at the tent as well.

Then it shockingly reached out one hand and grabbed the hair on his leg!

It only came to just above his knee but he flinched in shock just the same and lifted his arms out of its reach. It looked up at him and smiled, raising a finger to its lips with its free hand and made a blowing snake-like sound through its teeth. Then it let go and took a few steps backwards towards the camp, holding its palms up and obviously motioning him to stay where he was. Curious, he did so and when it saw he was not going to move, it ran lightly to the icebox, opened it and pulled something out.

Lowering the lid gently, it then raced over to him holding what it carried outstretched, offering whatever it was carrying to him!
He reached down and accepted the package, the smell of meat hitting his nostrils the instant he grabbed it. He quickly pealed off its wrapping to gaze in wonder at slices of what smelled like pig! He looked back down at the small Hairless One.

All his life he had been wary of them, and lately he had learnt to hate them with an anger equal to his hatred of the Rhugaru. The Hairless Ones always took, they never gave. Yet here was a small one, offering him meat like he would to an Alpha!

Tears rolled down the small one’s cheeks and the young Sasquatch recognised them as tears of happiness, not sadness. He felt something tug at his heart deep inside and the small one wrapped its arms around his leg, pressing its face into the long hair that covered and protected his skin. He heard a snort from the trees and looked up to see the old male’s daughter looking at him. Her body was shaking with quiet laughter!

Then his head swung the other way as something made a clinking noise inside the tent!

The Hairless Ones were waking up!

The small one had obviously heard it too, for it let go and stepped away, whispering some more sounds, “Bettergochewbacca.”

He whispered them back as quietly as he dared, “BETTERGOCHEWBACCA.”

Then the small one turned and dashed back to the tent. He watched it for a moment before turning and quickly disappearing into the trees holding the offering close to his chest.

Re: Frankly meets Chewbacca

Jimmy stepped out of the tent, scratching his head. It was his job to get up first and get the fire going for breakfast every morning. Pa liked to start early and the sun would soon be rising through the trees to the east.

He was surprised to see his little brother running towards him from the forest, a huge smile on his face, but tears streaming out of his eyes, what in hell?

“Franky?” being a good four years older than his little brother, Jimmy had learnt to be patient with Franky’s strange ways. He genuinely didn’t know if he himself had been like that when he was seven or if Franky legitimately had something wrong with his head.

Franky stopped right in front of him, eyes wide and grinning from ear to ear, “I just seen Chewbacca! But don’t tell Pa, he’ll wanna hunt him!”

It was way too early in the morning for this, “Okaaay… have you been sleepwalking again?”

“I really did, Jimmy. I seen Chewbacca!”, then his face grew serious as the sound of movement inside the tent heralded the imminent emergence of Pa, “Don’t tell Pa.”

“Don’t tell me what?” Pa’s stubbled face emerged from the tent. He looked from Franky to Jimmy, suspicion in his eyes, “Have you stoked the fire for breakfast yet boy?”

“No Pa, just doin’ it now,” Jimmy glared at Franky for waking his father too early, then walked across to the fire and began feeding the coals with small kindling, soon nursing a decent flame into life.

Pa frowned down at Franky, a half-smile on his face, “What are you up to boy?”

“Nuthin’ Pa.”

“Yeah, sure,” he ruffled his youngest son’s hair, “Go and put the coffee pot on for your Ma, son,” he said before walking down to the nearby stream to wash his face.

Franky rushed to do as he was told before going into the tent to change out of his pyjamas. From the camp bed where his parents slept his Ma spoke, “Mornin’ Franky. Looking forward to your first hunt?”

Franky remembered how momentous this day was supposed to be. He had been pestering his Pa for a whole year to go hunting with him. Pa had finally agreed and not only taken both his sons on this year’s trip, but Ma as well.
After arriving yesterday Pa had allowed him to shoot his brother’s 22 all by himself, trying desperately to hit the cans Pa had set up against a tree. He had been so excited at hunting for real he could barely sleep, finally getting up to go to the bathroom just before dawn, and then seeing Chewbacca!

Now the thought of going hunting did not have quite the same appeal, “I guess so.”

Ma sat up, surprised at the change in attitude, “You guess so? Yesterday you were so excited about going hunting… what’s wrong?”

“Nuthin.” He avoided his Ma’s questioning eyes and went back outside, buttoning up his shirt as he went.

Jimmy was greasing up the big old camp pan so Pa could cook breakfast. Pa was at the icebox, looking for something, “Dammit. I was sure I packed some bacon.”

Jimmy looked up from the fire, “You did. I saw it in there yesterday.”

“Well it ain’t here now.” He walked over with a carton of eggs, “Looks like its just eggs and toast for breakfast.”

Jimmy looked up at Franky, a questioning frown on his face. Franky avoided his eyes and walked down the trail to where he had met Chewbacca only minutes before. He looked into the trees but aside from some broken twigs saw no sign Chewbacca had ever been there. Then he looked down and saw the paper the bacon had been wrapped in. Guiltily, he looked around but no-one was looking at him so he quickly bent down and picked it up, scrunching it into his pocket. He would have to try and get rid of it later. Right now he was thinking hard, wondering where Chewbacca may have gone. He hoped he had enough sense to hide from his Pa.

A hand dropped to his shoulder, making him jump. He spun around. It was Pa.
He followed Franky’s gaze into the trees, “What are you lookin’ at, son?”
“Nothin’ but trees,” which was honest enough.

“Come and have some breakfast Franky. Today is the big day. Hopefully we bag a big buck.”

All through breakfast Franky’s thoughts kept revisiting his early morning encounter. Jimmy and Pa were talking about the day’s plans, but now they sounded boring. Chewbacca was nearby!

“OK Franky?” he realized Pa was talking to him.

“Sorry Pa?”

“I want you and Jimmy to do camp chores until I get back. I’m going to scout for a good tree stand for tonight. Jimmy can get those buckets filled while you get firewood, OK?”

“OK, Pa,” this was great… Maybe he could try and find out where Chewbacca had gone to?

“Don’t wander far. Stay in sight of the camp. It’s real easy to get lost in these woods. OK?”

“Sure Pa,” already he was thinking ahead, where would he go if he was an eight foot tall hairy wookie? Probably somewhere cool. Maybe near the stream somewhere?

After Pa left for his day of scouting, Franky helped Jimmy wash the pan and plates and tidy up the breakfast fixings. Ma arranged herself in a comfy camp chair with a book. She had only agreed on coming if she didn’t have to any cooking or cleaning and was determined to see that particular plan through.

As they were putting away the last plate, Jimmy looked intently at Franky, “Franky, what happened to the bacon?”

He looked over at Ma, who was engrossed in her book, before whispering back, “I gave it to Chewbacca. He looked hungry.”

Jimmy shook his head, disbelieving, “You better not have given it to some coyote.”

“Twasn’t no coyote, nor a bear. It was Chewbacca. An’ he’s been fighting… he’s got scratches on his face!”

“Franky, Chewbacca is a character from a movie. He ain’t real.”

“He is too. I seen him”

“No he ain’t! Now go and start fetchin’ firewood, like Pa asked. But don’t go too far. Remember what Pa said, stay in sight of the camp.”

“Yeah, I will.” Franky hung up the towel he was using to dry the dishes and went to get his hat. As he was leaving Ma looked up from her book, “Don’t go too far Franky. Stay in sight of the camp.”

“Yeah Ma, I know.” On his way out of camp Franky managed to pick up some apples from the box next to the cooler without his mother nor Jimmy noticing. Chewbacca might be still hungry.

This is another great read, thank you, and very much how a young person brought up on an iconic diet of Star Wars movies may explain seeing a Sasquatch, in their eyes, anyway.

Love it :) (thumb up)

Thanks Shazzoir, going by views lots have read it but nobody is commenting? Oh well, here is the next part...

The young Sasquatch and his troop of one had not gone far before finding a perfect bedding area for the day. It was a little too close to the Hairless One’s camp for comfort but was a cool and inviting place to sleep away the heat of the coming day.

Just off the stream, the flowing water provided natural air conditioning for the small hollow of thorny bushes. The thorns should be enough to deter investigation by any of the Hairless Ones as they slept. He positioned himself close to the stream, where he could relax with his back to a tree but still watch for any approach. Even if he fell asleep any sounds from anything crossing the stream should wake him instantly. The pig strips had gone some way to easing his hunger and despite the closeness of the Hairless One’s camp he soon found himself dozing off.

He was flying again.

His long, hairy arms steered his path through the cool, icy air.

The clouds parted and he was confronted with an immense vista of plains and mountains stretching as far as he could see in all directions, except one. To the north was that impossibly high wall of ice blocking the world.

He looked beneath his outstretched arms and caught glimpses of fast-flowing streams cutting their way through the earth, their flows swollen by melting ice. The valley bottoms were filled with grass where great herds of woolly bison trampled young trees before they could grow. Amongst the bison, smaller herds of even larger beasts grazed, a single long horn sprouting off their woolly noses. Here and there, family groups of Mammoth roamed like fleets of tall ships on the seas of the open grasslands.

Only on the hillsides did the forests gain a foothold, their depths hiding predators of all types, four-footed and two. Very few roamed the daylight, most preferring to sleep it away under the cool trees. Night-time was for hunting. Daytime was for sleeping for most of the great predators.

Most, but not all.

Sneaking amongst the boulders of a relatively bare hillside he saw small figures and recognised them as like the Hairless Ones from his other dream. They wore animal skins to protect their bald bodies and bore long spears of heavy wood, the tips fire-hardened into sharp points. The heaviest spears were tipped with sharpened stones and bound with strips of raw hide.

Curious as to what these creatures were doing he watched as they approached one of the large herds of bison. Even with their spears he could not see how these small creatures could manage to bring down such a powerful animal.

Then, just as they were getting close, the creatures stood up, waving their spears and shouting.

The herd took off, the rumbling roar of their passing echoing off the hills. The Hairless Ones gave chase, whooping and shouting as loudly as they could.
The young Sasquatch was confused as to the purpose of all the noise.

Surely they would be better off sneaking as close as possible, then attacking?

He followed the dust and the noise down the valley. Some of the herd broke off and veered into the trees and onto the hillsides, but where they ran, the small Hairless Ones were there in their uncountable numbers to shout and wave and force them back into the valley.

As he flew high above he noticed the valley slowly narrowing, then abruptly, it stopped, ending in a high cliff. The stream that followed the valley’s course formed a rainbow as it fell to the rocks beneath. The shouting and whooping grew louder and he realized at once what the Hairless Ones were doing!

They were driving the whole herd over the cliff, to die on the rocks below! Bulls, cows and calves flowed like the stream over the edge, the whooping and shouting Hairless Ones pushing them on with their noise.

In a matter of minutes it was all over. The entire herd was gone, dashed to pieces on the rocks below. Here and there, incredibly, some had managed to survive the fall and struggled to their feet, only to fall again as their broken bodies refused to take their weight. The sight saddened the young Sasquatch, still drifting high above in the thermals. He watched with sorrow and raising anger as countless Hairless Ones cheered and shouted from all sides, as those that survived the initial fall slowly died, their agonised bleatings of pain reaching to his ears even above the shouting and cheering of the throng.

No wonder there were so many Hairless Ones. Even with their countless numbers they had more than enough meat to feed five times their number in the dying and dead herd.

His heart breaking at the incredible waste of life he soared away, leaving the valley of death and the plague of Hairless Ones behind.

But then he saw more of them!

Several were sneaking through the high grass towards a forested hillside.
Trying to see what they were stalking, the young Sasquatch flew ahead.

There!

He spotted a sentinel.

It was like his own kind, but different. Slightly smaller, it had a rounded head, unlike his own conical one. And as it yawned in boredom he could see pronounced canines… a Gugwe!

He had met Gugwe before. At the berry feasts and more recently in the One-Eyed Alpha’s troop. This one was supposed to be standing guard over a small family group of three adults and four young that had chosen this treed hillside to bed down on for the day. The Gugwe sentinel was awake, but barely so for it yawned sleepily, totally unaware of the danger approaching through the long grass towards it.

The young Sasquatch had watched many Hairless Ones in the forest. They were usually clumsy and noisy, easy to hear coming from a long way away. But not these, they moved as quietly as a Sasquatch, not a blade of grass stirred at their passing, not a leaf crunched underfoot.

He tried to whistle a warning but no sound left his mouth. Desperately he swooped closer but as with the Mossabee in the other dream, his presence was ignored.

Helplessly he watched as several spears came from nowhere and struck the Gugwe, the shock and surprise on its face clearly evident. It tried to call out a warning but only red blood flowed from its open mouth, the warning call only coming out as a gurgling croak before it fell.

The Hairless Ones abandoned their stealth and charged into the nesting area, spears lifting and plunging down as they murdered the Gugwe family in its sleep!

The Alpha managed to get to his feet, only to be brought down almost as fast, bristling with spears. Even the young ones were brutally killed where they lay, the Hairless Ones whooping and shouting with bloodlust.

Tears falling from his eyes, the young Sasquatch swooped down amongst them, ineffectively swinging his powerful arms at the dancing, whooping throng of hunters. Suddenly a familiar voice cut through the noise and and he turned to see his mother!

She was standing, holding something in her arms, and unlike the others, who could not see him, nor apparently her, she was looking right at him!

The dancing figures faded, becoming themselves ghosts and spirits as they thrust their spears and yelled. Amongst them only he and his mother stood clear, his mother’s eyes compelling him to step closer.

She held the thing in her arms out to him and he saw it was the tiny hairless baby! He could plainly see the moss stuck to its forehead, placed there himself to heal the wound left by the Rhugaru! The screaming around him faded and became a single sound, repeated over and over again…
“Chewbacca?… Chewbacca?…”

Re: Frankly meets Chewbacca

His eyes snapped open and he sat motionless, listening, his back to the tree he had fallen asleep against.

“Chewbacca?” he heard the sound again and became fully aware of his surroundings.

There on the other side of the small stream was the small Hairless One who had given him the strips of pig! It was swaying back and forth, as if trying to see into the dark shadows of the thorny bushes he was hidden in. In each hand it held an apple!

Sensing movement, he slowly turned his head to see the old male’s daughter squatting a few yards away. She had been woken by its calling too.

What to do?

Before he could decide, the small Hairless One sat down and pulled off its shoes. Then picking up the apples again it started to cross the stream right towards him!

He looked at the old male’s daughter. She was watching him with a strange smile at his confusion. This small Hairless One was not an obvious threat, but he was nevertheless extremely wary. It was daytime. Where was the rest of its troop? Was it alone?

Confused and not knowing what to do he simply sat where he was as the small one crossed the stream and headed right towards where he sat. It suddenly stopped, seeing him for the first time, then smiled and chattered a stream of sounds at him as it kept coming.

Bracing himself for another hug, the young Sasquatch relaxed slightly when instead of hugging him the small one sat down opposite, still chattering away. It held out an apple. He stared at it like it was a snake that might bite him, the memory of his dream and the viciousness of the Hairless Ones fresh in his mind. He should kill this one and bury it so its troop could not find it. If they did they would surely follow him and hunt him down in his sleep, just like in his dream. He lifted his eyes from the apple to the small Hairless One’s bright daylight eyes. It was still chattering away, completely unaware of how close to death it was.

Before he could move however, the old male’s daughter rose and stepped close. The small one’s eyes widened at the sight of her. He was obviously not expecting another ‘Chewbacca’ and the chattering stopped abruptly.
Silently, she reached out for the apple he was offering, cupping her hand under his. He dropped it carefully into hers and she slowly brought it to her mouth and took a bite before setting herself down to slowly chew and swallow, her eyes never leaving the small Hairless One as she ate.
Soon, the apple was devoured, core and all.

She reached out for the other one it still held in its other hand. Its eyes were still wide at the sight of two Chewbaccas, but it started up its chattering again as it held out the other apple for her. She took it and happily bit into it before remembering her place and offering it to the young Sasquatch who had not moved a muscle at this bizarre sight. Accepting it from her he bit into it. It was delicious!

He had not eaten apple since last season when he had helped his father raid an orchard. And then they had not been quite ripe. The whole family had eaten masses of the fruit that night, giving them all stomach cramps as a result.

Chomping and swallowing the core, he looked again at the small one before him, still unsure what to do with it. Then he heard a voice from across the stream!

“Franky?”

Jimmy called again, louder, “Franky?”

Damn it.
Franky knew to not get out of sight of the camp.
Where in hell had he gone?

Then Jimmy heard a muffled, “That’s my brother. Wait here,” from across the stream he was following up the valley. He looked over the water to see Franky emerge from a thorny patch of brush on the far side of the stream.

“Franky! What the hell?”

Franky stood there, barefoot on the other side, and waved. Then Jimmy noticed Franky’s shoes beside the stream for the first time.
“I found him Jimmy! I found Chewbacca! I told you he was real!”

“Franky, who in hell were you talking to?” Jimmy felt suddenly afraid. Were there some weirdos out here in the woods?
“Chewbacca, Jimmy! And he’s got a friend! There’s two of ’em! I think the other one’s a girl!”

“A girl? Franky, you come across here right now, you hear?”

“It’s OK, Jimmy. They won’t hurt you. They like apples!”

“Apples!” Jimmy’s uneasiness grew. Suddenly the woods felt very dangerous. He was not used to feeling like this in the woods. He had never felt fear like this in all the years he had been coming out into the woods with Pa. Jimmy heard the shaking in his own voice as he shouted, “Franky! Get over here, right now!”

“Aw gee whiz Jimmy.” Franky reluctantly splashed across towards him and sat to pull his shoes back on, “Stop freaking out. They won’t hurt you.”

The hair tingling on the back of his neck, Jimmy stared into the brush, trying to see any hint of whatever Franky was raving about. There was nothing there!
He stepped closer to the stream edge, in order to get a better view, was that a shape of something? Something really big?

His peripheral vision caught something flying out of the trees towards him and a large rock came splashing down into the stream, the impact soaking his trousers and running into his shoes!

“What in HELL!”

Franky started laughing but Jimmy was suddenly very scared. What in hell threw rocks? Was there somebody over there messing with him?

Then a tree started to shake, the force of it whipping the top backwards and forwards like crazy. It was not a small tree either. Who… what in the world was strong enough to do that? Distantly he heard Franky say “Uh-oh, I guess Chewbacca doesn’t like you Jimmy.”

He tore his eyes away from the tree to stare at Franky, whose face was suddenly very serious, “I think you better go now, Jimmy.”

Heavy crunching sounds whipped his head back to stare once more across the stream. Somebody, no someTHING was stomping around over there! Something very heavy. And it was obviously letting him know it was very big, and very pissed off.

Jimmy opened his mouth to shout at his brother to run, but his mouth was dry and all that came out was a hoarse croak. His mind shouted at his own legs to move but they refused, his knees shaking so bad he thought if he tried to run he would probably fall over!

What in hell was happening? Then the corner of his eye caught a blur as something leapt across the stream to his right! He swung his head trying to catch another glimpse, but it was gone. He looked at the stream, judging the distance. That was at least 20 feet! Something had just jumped twenty feet to land in the trees on his side of the stream! Jimmy felt the remaining blood drain from his face as Franky tugged on his arm, “We better go now Jimmy. Chewbacca is angry at you.”

Stupidly, all he could do was nod his head in agreement as he began to stumble away, back towards the camp. The stumble quickly turned into a wild, desperate sprint as something hidden in the trees growled at him!

His mind screamed that it was right there, practically standing in front of him when it growled, but his brain refused to register what he had thought he had seen amongst the trees. Instead he ran. His legs pumping, his feet felt like they were barely touching the ground and the crazy image of Roadrunner from the cartoons flashed into his mind, gratefully replacing the image of something very large and hairy growling at him from the trees. As he ran the hair all over his body stood on end in anticipation of being grabbed from behind at any moment.

Screaming, he ran into camp, “MOM! MOM!”

His mother jumped from the camp chair, her book slapping closed in one hand, the other yanking off her reading glasses, “Jimmy, what’s wrong?” He ran to her and buried himself into her embrace, something he had not done for many years.

“Jimmy? Are you OK? What’s going on?”

As his breath started to come back he started to tell her, “There is something in the forest… near the stream!”

“What is it Jimmy? Did you see a bear?”

Jimmy paused. He dared a look back, but all he saw was Franky trotting casually into camp, an unreadable expression on his face.
“Franky,” his mother shouted, “Did you see a bear?”

Without answering, Franky glared at Jimmy, who blinked, his mind racing. Had he seen a bear? There wasn’t supposed to be bears in this part of the country. And what kind of bear threw rocks and shook trees? And was eight feet tall? He shook his head, trying to make sense of what he thought he had seen. It was impossible. He must have imagined it!

He remembered how hard Pa had worked on his mother to finally get her to come out into the woods camping. If he told her what he thought he had seen she would think he was crazy. If he said he had seen a bear she would make Pa take them all home and probably never come camping again.
“Jimmy! What did you see? Tell me!”

Jimmy looked up into his mother’s worried eyes, “Nu… nuthin’ Ma. Franky scared me is all.”

He looked back at Franky, who dropped his frown and smiled, playing along with the lie, “Ha ha, got you Jimmy!” he said.

“Oh you boys!” Ma let him go and sat back in her chair, putting her reading glasses back on, “You scared me half to death. Get on with you both.” She opened her book, “and stop scaring each other. Play nice.”

“Yes ma,” Franky said, a mischievious twinkle in his eye as he continued to stare at his older brother, who answered him with a confused scowl. What in hell had just happened?

“Hello listeners… welcome to another episode of SquatchTalk Radio. Tonight we have a guest calling in with a very interesting encounter. He wishes to remain anonymous so we will call him Jack. Jack, welcome to the show.”

“Thanks Gary, er thanks for having me on.”

“Oh no, thank you Jack. Jack your encounter was recent. Is that correct?”

“Yeah Gary. Just last night in fact. We just got back.”

“You mentioned in the pre-interview that you never believed in Bigfoot before your encounter, is that right?”

“Yeah, that’s right. I mean I didn’t not believe. Just didn’t really think about it too much I guess. Been huntin’ all my life and never seen nuthin’ all those years to lead me to believe in bigfoots. ‘Course I seen the Patterson film when I was a kid, like everyone. And the Legend of Boggy Creek, but I guess I thought it was just the movies or sumthin’. I met a guy once who claimed to have seen one, but I thought he was just talkin’ BS. Feel sorry for that now, after what happened last night.”

“So what happened last night. You said you were camping?”

“Yeah, that’s right. The whole family came along this year. See, every year I go to the same spot. It’s my cousin’s place. He lets me hunt out there every season. He’s got some really good camping spots on his property. Good water, easy walkin’, pretty open country with patches of regrown forest. Previous owners cleared it all bout fifty years back so no real big timber no more, but pretty good huntin’… well usually there is… Not much about this year though, droughts pretty bad. Some of them streams is still runnin’, but not much.”

“Yeah, its been real dry right across the country.”

“Damn right. We need some rain real bad. Anyways, started out real nice. Set up camp Saturday mornin’. Had some fun shootin’ cans for target practice that afternoon. It was my youngest son’s first real hunt. He was real excited. Been pesterin’ me to take him out for ages now. Lemme back up a bit. I got two boys, eleven and seven. Oldest has been comin’ out with me for years but Ma is still protective over Franky, that’s the youngest. He’s always been a bit different, has Franky. Always in his own little world he is. Talks to hisself a lot, you know how young-uns are. And Jimmy… well Jimmy’s a real chip off the old block. Loves to camp and hunt, climb trees, all that sort of outdoors stuff boys his age love.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean, Jack… I was always in trees when I was a kid.”

“Yeah, me too. Anyways, the second day I went out while the boys and their ma stayed in camp. I was scoutin’ for a new spot for a tree stand. My favourite spot was dry, no tracks nowhere near it, so I was tryin’ to find a new one. Really wanted to get a nice buck for Franky, bein’ his first hunt an all. Finally found a good spot, right near a fresh game trail. It was right the way up the valley, towards the south, almost off the property it was. Looked like a few deer were still around. Actually, it was the only tracks I seen since arriving so thought I didn’t really have a choice.
“Anyways that evenin’ me an the boys headed up there. Took us ’bout an hour an a half of walkin’ an we got there just as it was gettin’ true dark. I had already set up the stand durin’ the day so all we had to do was get up on it and wait. It was a bit of a tight squeeze, me an’ the two boys. It’s a stand I made myself, basically a couple boards screwed to the top step of a big ol aluminium ladder that I tied to a tree… so we’re settin’ there an I notice Jimmy, that’s me eldest, he was jumpy as all hell. Twitchin’ his head about in all directions he was, eyes like saucers, like it was his first time out huntin’ an he was scared or sumthin’… he was a bit quieter than normal when I had got back to camp that afternoon and when I axed him what was wrong his ma piped up about Franky scarin’ him real bad while I was gone.
“Now Jimmy’s a pretty tough kid… he’s come home more than once with a bloody nose or a black eye… always tol’ me he gave more than he got… so yeah, pretty tough kid. I always tol’ him to never start a fight, but always finish it. I mean, I guess what I am tryin’ to say is, the thought of Franky scarin’ Jimmy that bad just doesn’t fit. Boy’s been in the forests with me since he could walk, he’s not scared of nuthin’… like me… or like I was… until last night…”

“I guess you found out why he was acting so scared huh?”

“Sure did… an it was an underwear changin’ experience, let me tell ya.”

“I bet it was. And no one could blame you either. Did you ask him what was wrong?”

“Tried to, several times… but he always just kept sayin’, nuthin’ Pa. When we first started walkin’ he was hangin’ back, lookin’ all round, as if he thought somethin’ was about to pounce on him from the trees. But then as it got darker durin’ the hike he started almost trippin’ me up, he was followin’ so close behind. By the time we got to the tree stand his face was so white I hardly needed a torch!”

“How was your youngest, Franky?… through all this?”

“He was havin’ a great time. Kept whistlin’ this tune as we walked, drove me nuts! I finally worked out what it was… it was the music for Star Wars, you know, the movie… the first one?”

“DA da… dadadadADAA…”

“That’s it! Can’t get it outta me head now! Damn kid!”

“So you were sitting in the stand in the dark… what happened?”

“Yeah, ok… ah… that’s right, Jimmy was real fidgety see, I mean we’re supposed to be huntin’, stayin’ still and quiet … I tells him to settle down and my voice near made him fall off the stand! He jumped up as if a wasp bit him, but I grabbed him and hauled his ass back onto the seat. I was gettin’ angry now and grabbed his shirt, forcin’ him to look me in the eyes an I said, what in hell is wrong with you? Tell me how Franky scared you today. Then what Franky said threw me right off. He said it wasn’t him that scared Jimmy, it was Chewbacca!”

“Ah, hence the star wars music…”

“Yeah, but I didn’t get that until after. Then he said he’d given Chewbacca some bacon that mornin’! And some apples! And then he begged me not to shoot him! Chewbacca, I mean! An’ that Chewbacca didn’t like Jimmy for some reason and had chased him back to camp!”

“Jesus! No wonder the poor kid was terrified to be out there after an experience like that!”

“Yeah, no wonder… huh… Well, I was about to get real angry. I’d hauled that damn tree stand right up into these damn mountains to get Franky a deer on his first hunt and now he was scarin’ away all the game with some stupid story he had created in his damn overactive imagination! But then I remembered Jimmy’s face. The kid had definitely seen somethin’ so I axed him, did you see a bear? He said, Do bears throw rocks? Now I was real confused but before I could say anythin’ else a beautiful buck comes chargin’ down the game trail right at us. Before I could even lift my rifle, two doe came chargin’ after him. Somethin’ was chasin’ them… they’d been runnin’ for a while, their sides were heavin’ and their coats was wet, tongues hangin’ out and eyes bulgin’. They’re comin’ at us too fast for me to get a bead on em so I don’t take the shot. In no time they have run right up to the tree stand and stopped, right under us! They was blowin’ real hard and lookin’ back down the trail behind ’em. They was practically leanin’ on the stand! They was that close! They must have known we was there, all three had practically pressed right up against us, but didn’t give a damn we were there!”

“Uh Oh.”

“Yeah, real strange. I never seen the like.”

“What did you do?”

“Just sat there, lookin’ at em, tryin’ to work out what could possibly be chasin’ em. I looked up but saw nuthin’ comin’ down the trail after them, no bear, no cat, no pack of coyotes, nuthin’. The deer refused to move though… just stood there, sides heavin’, eyes bulgin’ back down the trail. It was like they had run to us for protection or somethin’… like we were the lesser threat! I never seen nor heard of the like in my whole life!”

“I have. I couldn’t tell you the number of reports I have had from hunters where a similar thing happened. Like you say, in such cases they are so desperate to get away from what is chasing them they run right up to hunters.”

“Yeah, well it was new to me. Then I noticed one of the doe’s ears twitch and rotate sideways. She turned her head to look to our left. I tried to make out what she was lookin’ at but it was too dark. I thought I caught a glimpse of somethin’ in the trees. You gotta unnerstand, it was a decent moon but under the trees it was real dark. I looked harder an’ there was definitely sumthin’ there. I could see the edge of it as it moved an got the impression of mass… something very tall and wide was standin’ in the trees.. an’ that’s when my brain froze up. I mean, I couldn’t comprehend what I was seein’. It didn’t make sense. It was too tall for a bear, or even a moose, not that we’ve got any of them in these parts… it was just too goddam big!”

“Oh boy! Did you have a torch?”

“Yeah I got a torch, an’ I used it too… but as I lifted it whatever was standin’ there just disappeared. I turned it on and there was nuthin’ there! …Thought I must have imagined it. Damn kid talkin’ chewbacca nonsense, I thought, he’s got me seein’ things!”

“Ha, if only hey?”

“Yeah, if only… cos then Jimmy starts talkin’ real fast, over an over, he was sayin’ wegottago… wegottago… over an over… gave me the creeps real bad. I looked down an the deer were gone! But now I had the feeling there was somethin’ else out there, possibly several somethins. I mean, I’ve been hunted before, by mountain lion a few times and once a Grizzly! That sunuva(BEEP) got me treed for hours when I was a kid… point is… I know the feelin’… of bein’ hunted I mean, and we were bein’ hunted then. I remembered Franky’s Chewbacca an’ the thought of a f(BEEP)ng Wookie in the dark huntin’ us wasn’t a good one.”

“Ha… no I don’t think it would be.”

“I mean, I had me gun, but it felt pretty damn small in me hands at that point. I thought of how far it was back to camp in the dark… there was no way I was gettin’ down off that tree stand. In fact, it felt too damn close to the ground. We were only ’bout ten feet up an that shape I had seen seemed ’bout as high as we was. Above us were some good sized branches. I knew they would take our weight so I told the boys to climb, to get higher. Frankly scoots up like a squirrel an Jimmy starts to follow…
… Sorry, I’m relivin’ it a bit here…”

“That’s fine, take your time.”

“Thanks… well… I seen Jimmy was almost on the branch above me so I reaches up and grabs it to follow him… I wasn’t muckin’ about, you know… felt very vulnerable settin’ there so low an all… anyways, before I could get all my weight off the stand… it was tricky, with one hand an all, was still holding me gun, ya see?… …Jesus, it musta bin so close… sorry… give me a moment…”

“Of course Jack… take your time… I understand, it must have been terrifying.”

“Ta say the least… well I was holdin’ on with one hand like I said… I lifted me foot to get a leg-up but still had me weight on the stand when sumthin’ hit it! Took it right out from under me in one swipe!”

“Good grief, did you fall?”

“No, thank god. But I dropped me damn gun. And the damn torch! Had to… To stop fallin’ ya see… grabbed that damn branch with both hands an hauled meself up onto that branch like I was twenty years younger… having me legs hangin’ down like that… I mean I’ve bin scared before, but that was easily the worst half a second in me life, I can tell you… without doubt!”

“Ha, I bet. What happened next, Jack?”

“Looked down expectin’ to see… I dunno what… but there was nothin’ there! The stand was bent all out of shape an’ on the ground, as if it had just been run over by a truck! Whatever had hit it was real powerful! Seein’ the ladder like that I got real scared. I mean I was scared before, but nuthin’ like this. Whatever could do that to a metal ladder could just as easily push the dang tree over!”

“I am sure… what were your boys doing?”

“Settin’ there up the tree. Holdin’ on for dear life, I guess, like I was doin’… man I bet there are indents in that tree, I was holdin’ it that hard.

“Then Franky suddenly says, that wasn’t Chewbacca. I said what do you mean? Did you see it? What hit the ladder? He said he did see it. It was bigger, and scarier than Chewbacca. I said to Jimmy, did you see it? He said no. He had been climbin’ on up the branch when he heard it hit the ladder…
So I axed Franky what it had looked like, was it a bear?”

“What did he say?”

“He said it wasn’t no bear… he said it looked like Chewbacca, only bigger, with bigger scars on its face… I don’t remember Chewbacca havin’ scars?…”

“Oh boy… what did you do? Did it go away?”

“If only. Whatever it was, it was pissed. I figured afterwards we must of ruined its hunt so it was takin out its anger on us. Those damned deer had used us to get away from it!”

“Sure sounds like it Jack. So how did you get away?”

“We didn’t. We sat there all night while that thing terrorised us. It stomped about, making a lot of noise. Whatever it was, it was smart. It knew how to make us very aware of its size and power. Sometimes it broke off small trees and threw them at us, or rather against the tree we were settin’ in. It could have easily pushed us over, or climbed it, but it didn’t, just stomped about. Then it would stop for a bit and it would be quiet, giving us hope it had given up and gone away, but no. Suddenly it would start again, on the other side of us. Have no idea how it could do that, get across so much distance without us hearin’ it.”

“Well, I hate to tell you this Jack, but it was likely more than one. You were probably surrounded by a whole troop.”

“Really? Yeah, yeah, that makes sense. Jesus… there could have been half a dozen, now I think about it… Ahh god, that’s even scarier.”

“Did it… did they, do any vocalisations?”

“Yeah a couple a times. I heard it growl. Actually, now I think of it, there were at least three very different growls… now it makes sense… different animals would have different voices, like us, right?”

“That’s correct Jack. Was that all they did, growl?”

“No, right before dawn there was some angry mumblin’, like someone was talking really fast at a distance, just far enough that I couldn’t make out the words. It sort of flowed all together. After that it went quiet. Eventually the sun started to come up. I tell ya, I never been so glad to see the sun in my whole life.”

“Yeah, I bet.”

“We could finally see around us a bit. There was nuthin’ there, ‘cept the broken stand at the foot of our tree. From where I was I could see broken branches and scuffed up ground all round us.”

“Where was your gun?”

“Found it against another tree about fifty feet away, all twisted and broken like a pretzel. Sends chills down my spine all over again thinkin’ of the strength required to twist a rifle barrel like that!”

“So you walked back to camp without a weapon?”

“Yeah, didn’t take us long though. Reckon we got back in half the time it took us to get out there. The whole horrible night I couldn’t stop thinkin’ about my wife, all alone back at camp. I thought my worst fears were realised when we got back to camp and it was all tore up, it was a real mess. Tent was the only thing still standin’, freezer was knocked over, all the food was gone, camp chairs broken and tossed about…”

“Oh no… what about your wife?”

“Well, when I saw the camp like that I screamed her name and she came runnin’ out of the tent in her PJs. We must have been a sorry sight, all wide-eyed and pale like that, she stared at us, askin’ what was wrong! I just held her and cried like I was a little kid… Thank God she was okay… Then she seen the camp…”

“Oh no… I bet she went pretty wide-eyed and pale herself when she saw the camp?”

“Yeah she did. She couldn’t believe what she was seein’. She never heard a thing! Man, I never been so happy to see her in my life!… I had been thinkin’ of her all night, back in the camp by herself with us about to die, an then when I seen the camp, all tore up like that I right away thought the worst. Man was I happy when she came out that tent!”

“Oh, I bet. Tell me Jack, how come she didn’t hear the camp being torn up during the night?”

“Turns out she was watching TV shows she had put on her iPad and had her headphones on to save the batteries.”

“Oh wow. Probably a good thing she didn’t hear it. God knows what might have happened if she had investigated.”

“Yeah, I know right? Well she freaked out enough when it finally sunk in. Started cryin’, so did the boys, so did I in fact an I’m not ashamed too admit it neither.”

“Oh, I don’t think anyone could blame you there Jack. You went through an experience very few have. Tell me, how do you feel about the woods now? Sounds like you are a keen outdoorsman?”

“Was one. Ain’t no way I’m ever goin’ back into them woods, Gary. An anyone goes out lookin’ for these things is outta their damn minds.”

OUTSTANDING!!!!

I loved the 'underwear changing moment' line, hahahahahah. Man, what a tale! That would have been life changing too, as evidenced by 'Jack's' last line.

Love it, Wolf!

Thanks Shazzoir.
Just have to wait for an agent to love it too so I can get the whole novel published.

I've got about a dozen rejection emails so far... each one is one closer to the right agent.

Umm, no offence Wolf, but are we now mixing known fiction with unknown fact with yowie encounter stories?

I'm sure it's a great read and there is an audience for fictional tales of the yowie, I'm sure. But, if we are taking yowie encounter stories as serious human experiences worthy of research, I can't afford to be reading straight fiction stories on this subject.

I'll have to rely on Shazzoir's praises. (thumb up)

I did note what I suspect was subtle reference to Senator Bill O'Chee's encounter, with Franky thinking the Yowie resembled Chewbacca, and referring to the hairy man by that moniker ;) so some truth in this fiction, I suspect.

I've enjoyed reading, as Wolf stated it was a work of fiction I think, when posting it... either way, having something well-written to read is always nice.

Re: Frankly meets Chewbacca

My weekend work means spending long hours driving so for years now I have been listening to witness reports (which is how one learns the most about these intriguing hominids).

Believe it or not I am a very logical person who thinks and works things out... a lot.

My engineer brother always said I was the one who should have been an engineer because I have this knack of working out a solution to a problem, whether it be physical or mental. Listening to literally thousands of hours of witness reports allowed me to apply this thought process to the 'problem' of an 'unknown' animal being able to exist and thrive relatively unseen in a 'human-dominated' world.

I have always had empathy for and the ability to place myself in the position and possible thought processes of animals so it was a natural step to take the witness experiences and theorise the observed behaviours from the point of view of the Sasquatch... prompting and inspiring me to write about them in an effort to help promote a better understanding of what I strongly suspect are our cousins.

The result is a novel called 'Sasquatch- Innocence Lost' (and my website SasquatchSagas.com). I have written it to be as factual as possible, most chapters inspired by reported encounters and expressing well known and lesser known Sasquatch behaviours and what is to me, likely explanations of what these animals are and their genealogical history.

The chapter about Franky and 'Chewbacca' was inspired mainly by a witness report of a young child who had been feeding an animal he called Chewbacca. The witness reporting said encounter was an older friend who the boy tried to introduce to Chewbacca but Chewie did not appreciate the effort and drove the elder boy away.

Black, if you are truly interested in learning about these animals I suggest listening to Sasquatch Chronicles, preferably from the earliest episodes forward. Other informative shows/podcasts are Bigfoot Outlaws, Bigfoot Eyewitness Radio, Dogman Encounters Radio and Duke Sullivan's World Bigfoot Radio.

Ok Wolf,

I'll consider that. I see what you're doing now.

In the meantime, I'll be carrying out field research myself in the next couple of days. I've been in contact with a couple of witnesses who say they are experiencing more strange activity. It's an area as likely or unlikely as any other area and semi-urban.
