"First nations people"??

Why is there a contradiction in Aboriginal history when elders state that there were tribes of different peoples here before them but they call themselves "First nations people" ?

I see your dilemma....Maybe the Yowies should get a voice to Parliament too as they were apparently here before aboriginals? or if you really want to think about it who was here before them? it could go on and on.

I have nothing against acknowledging culture, as long as its not used as a political tool to destroy other cultures.

Everybody deserves respect and dignity.

As I see this thread going downhill very fast I will see how it develops, if it gets heated it will be locked.

You make an extremely valid point when you say "acknowledging culture as long as it`s not used as a political tool to destroy other cultures".

Hoping this thread doesn`t go down hill fast because I think it deserves further respectful discussion and by doing so it may enlighten all cultures to our history of Australia!

I also find that interesting. Although elders do speak of other previous "tribes", I guess the difference is that generally the scientific community don't recognise the hairyman in Australia (or at least they are not telling the general public so).

That could quite possibly be the case Greg, I also think there is a bit of politics at play at the moment. A lot of people who claim to be "First Nations People" sometimes are not, and have very little aboriginal in them and as you say that could be a result of them having lost culture in itself.
