South Coast Yowies
I am really keen to go check that out too. I am not sure if anyone has heard of it, it is west of Nowra, South Coast NSW by about an hour. Its called Coolendel, which was once a mining town. Once again there are alot of old mines, and a few farms and the Shoalhaven River, but apart from that its think bush everywhere. We used to have family camping trips out there, and when I was about 11 I had my bike and was waiting for the other kids and I stopped on this bridge and then I could here this "TAP TAP TAP" pause "TAP TAP TAP" - I just thought, meh, Im gettin outta here! And then this old lady said a few weeks later to my dad that she saw some "Yowie" footprints in the bush while walking her dog. I straight up said "whats a yowie" and my dad was really adamant that she shut hert mouth! So out of curiosity I went to her caravan ( this is a caravan park right adjacent to bush, National Park ) a bit later and asked her. She told me all about this hairy man from the bush, and how it terrorises her, her husband and dogs. She also mentioned they don't like dogs. Apprently this thing was coming out every few weeks and just standing outside the caravan, breathing. She said that one night it set the dogs off and the "Yowie" got angry and growled and kind of pushed the wall of the van behind where she was sleeping. She was begging the dogs to be quiet out of fear this thing would come inside.
The next day she went out and ( she did show me this I will never forget ) showed me the wall this thing was pushing in anger the previous night. becuase the Van was old , there was a bit of moss on the back and you could make out this enormous finger marks about from each hand about 1.5 m apart!
Needless to say, I didn't want to go for bushwalks anymore, and my dad and the lady exchanged some stern words!
But I guess that made me think about Coolendel again, and I believe that may have been a yowie after seeing all the stuff on this forum.
Coolendel is very secluded, theres alot of cliffs, rocks and lantana. Oh and several goldmines. Its a camping spot now. But I have seen a show about how it used to be a mining town.
I would be keen to go to Mogo for a look, I think there is a lot of undiscovered things in the south coast region, especially out at Sassafras which is between Nowra Goulburn and Canberra - Thats the only way I can think to describe it. But its high up in the mountains, when you go there you will not see a car, nor person. Its very peaceful, And I have heard of Yowie sightings from years ago up there.
if anyone is keen to see these places, drop me a line.

Re: South Coast Yowies
I'd be interested in any South Coast expeditions. I'm living in Sydney but saving for some land down around Moruya which I've recently been reading it is known as Yowie country so I'm keen to get familiar with the land and its secrets
I have some basic IR DV camera equipment and a lot of editing experience so documenting won't be a prob.

Well we should sort something out. Does anyone know if there is a particular time of the year that would be preferable for this kind of expedition? Sounds great. I will try and drag my partner along, he is interested in this but claims he will shi% himslef if he cam eface to face or there was even an inkling a yowie was present! Haha. Sook

Thanks iwant2see, for your post, great story and I wonder, did anyone happen to get a photo of the van that you mentioned .
And regarding Coolendel, well I say 'go for it' anytime you wish, get in there and get your hands dirty! Dont forget to take along your camera and a note book and enjoy some out of the way exploring, im sure there would be so much history to uncover on 'all 'levels and we would like very much to hear about your adventure when your done
(Ps) Tell your partner " He will be fine, he only needs to remember the ' AYR MATH ' and this is.. ... A good trip to the loo to begine +
A good few hours crawling about in bush,
= no embarrassing little moments.

Re: South Coast Yowies
I have attached some photos of Coolendel and the Mine shaft entrances. if anyone wants to have a look there is a website http://www.coolendel.com.au/photos.html So have a look around.
Thanks for the interest guys. I will discuss this with my partner. I will however say that 4wd's would be more suited to the drive. its beautiful out there and the drive is always fun. Crack open a beer for the drive along the dirt road! haha. They have rapids - not enormous ones, but you can hire canoes and have a bit of fun!
I will look at dates and get back to you.

Re: South Coast Yowies
Hmm my main prob is I don't have a 4wd, only an older camry with noisy CV joints! I can reach anywhere on sealed roads though so maybe could arrange something like a pickup spot. This time next year I'll have a hilux though
I guess it's worth gathering up some recent intel before heading out into the field? This is a call out to anyone with contacts in the following areas as it's hard to gain locals trust if you are an outsider asking far out questions, whereas an insider would get through a lot easier. So I notice some farms near Coolendel at Bugong and Illaroo. Meanwhile, I have a contact at Nerriga near enough to Sassafras which I'll press for some info. Down towards Batemans Bay, there is Nellligen and Buckenbowra to check in on, and then there's the Mogo connection.

Wow Shar Chi! You really know your stuff! I grew up down that way. Great place.
As for the Car's everyone My mum drove out in a holden commodore station wagon for the years we went out. Also been out in a ford Laser. I just say 4wds might be better if it has been wet. I mean the road gets grated every month or so - So any car is fine really!

Re: South Coast Yowies
Yeah I've spent a LOT of time cruisin' the open roads of the south coast, but mostly camping at the beaches rather than the hills. Sounds like the camry will make it out to cullendulla so that's good, but last I heard the track to sassafras / nerriga is corrugation hell... my folks access Nerriga via Goulburn just to avoid it. I told them i might be goin' in search of yowies out there i just got silence

HI Shar Chi
Re: The road to Sassafras, If you go down braidwood road from the Princes highway just south of nowra, you will find that alot of it has been tarred in the past 12 months. My partner is in Canberra, and I believe he will come back that way next weekend so I will get him to see what its like now.
As for telling people I am going looking for Yowies well I don't.
A few people are on the same boat as me, I have told them ad pretty much what I say is. How can it not be real if "x" amount of people have seen one of these things, given the same discription, similar surroundings etc.
My aim would be to get a clear, concise photo or video. I guess it might be unrealistic. But I guess anyone hoping to do the same should keep a camera with them at all times.
I find the concept of the Yowie very interesting. I would love to see one. Well fingers crossed me head to some hotspot soon!
