Questions for Aboriginals about Yowies

Hi Everyone,

During July 10-14th 2008 I will be staying at the Bondi State Forest Lodge near Eden.
We will be spending a whole day with a group of Aboriginals from Eden who are coming to teach us their ways in a number of areas. As the Yowie topic has already been raised with them, and they have responded positively in terms of discussing it, I figured it is a good opportunity to put together a list of questions any one might want an Aboriginal group to answer on the subject. If you could please respond to this subject with your question in a concise manner, I will take the list with me, get the answers and then post them on this discussion board after the trip. I felt it was a good opportunity and would like to inlcude all of you if you are interested.

Happy New Year to you,

One topic that always gets people going is the old flesh and blood vs the paranormal debate. It would be interesting to hear their thoughts on whether they believe the big guy to be purely flesh and blood or to have more spiritual qualities to them.

Any historical stories are always good to hear as well.

Yeah I'm currently looking at buying land in the hill country between Bega and Narooma and I'd like to know if these areas of the South Coast are STILL considered habitats by the elders. Personally I have a feeling they are and intend to find out for myself shortly Also like to know more about their legends and lore regarding how to interact with yowies and whether yowies have a tendency to live underground.

Iw as talking to a guy I know on the weekend who is aboriginal and I asked him because I have heard him talk of the hairy man before, if he has any stories ( he was referring to a mission called Wreck Bay near Jervis Bay South Coast NSW ) he said that his Aunty's place was right on the edge of the Booderee National park and one nigth they had caught fish and they left them out the back. The next morning they awoke to find a section of the back fence had been smashed down and the fish taken and on closer inspection the fence had a 30cm long dreadlock ( from how he described it ) I asked him to describe it he said the colour was reddish brown and that it stunk like Pis* and Shi* and the smell wouldn't go away for weeks!

He also said that this thing was hanging around for a few weeks after that, then the subject was changed.

I have dealings with Indigenous groups very often up here in the Topend, iget out to a lot of communities and meet with many different groups, sometimes when the opportunity is right , i ask about our hairy hominid friend. the response i get is usually always that they are instantly known about and the info i get told is congurent with what is already known by us ' white fellas " . One recent case was where i was working with some people from the Roper River area, the lady saw a picture i had of a yowie, she identified it instantly as a " Brungi-jit ", she said that she shouldn't be talking about it, but told me some tid bits, she stated that these creatures live in remote gorges and that you feel them when they are watching you ( sound familiar ), she said that they can make you scared from a distance and that they cannot be trusted, she went on. so i just make note about these bits of info i collect. the story is the same right across the topend, same descriptions. These people have a long history with them and should be listened to.

I spoke to an aboriginal gentleman in huskisson (south coast) a few years back . He said when he was young, they, (doolagarhls)= yowies would dissapear into the ground after stealing chicken eggs/food.

I've heard a lot of stories like that, even dissapearing into thin air.
