Just looking on the FLIR site - you can pick up an FLIR i5/i7 for about $1,900 AUD. Yes, thats a bit of cash.. and the image resolution is limited to 120x120px - about the size of the average avatar on this forum. But here's some more info, regardles..

Would any company/organisation be willing to donate or help out buy a decent FLIR camera to, well, help us out at all? Or is that totally out of the question.

I have looked at all these and the series your are looking at will not work except at a closer range than you may feel comfortable with. They are designed for sensing around electrical installations and building structures. A better FLIR series are the H,HM or HS series which are substantially more expensive. Search Jager Pig hunting youtube videos and you will see what these can do. Sorry about the gruesome topic but you can see clearly the way they detect human and animals at distance. Telephoto lenses are needed to "identify" distant animals, otherwise they will just be a blob on the display.
