I thought I would tag onto the end of this thread since I live in Sheldon which is sort of between Mt Cotton and Rochedale. I have some questions more than anything else.

Anyway, last week I was walking home from work and I heard a tree break in the bush near a creek that flows under the road . It was a very sharp sound and quite loud like a deliberate action. It didn't sound like a huge tree (or branch), possible a size that I could almost break myself but it was lound enough to reverberate in the stillness. It was just after sunset and drizzling a bit. As I walked along the road closer to the sound, something moved very quickly though the bush and made a bit of a racket crashing through the undergrowth. I saw a dark shape low to the ground probably on all fours but couldn't make out anything else because it was too dark under the canopy of trees. I stopped for a minute but didn't see anything else so started walking again. There may have been another one there as well because as I walked a few more steps I heard so more crashing of something escaping in a different direction to the first sound. I didn't see anything from the second noise. There are heaps of wallabies in the area but it didn't sound like the thumping of wallabies feet more like a scrabbling crashing sound. I was thinking more along the lines of a black dog but i thought it was a bit quick and too noisy for a dog.

So can anyone suggest what this animal could have been? Medium size, black or dark colour, fast and breaks trees? I had a look a few days later for tree breaks but couldn't see anything definitive. Although I guess it could have been anything I thought I would share.

Could you be more specific when you say 'medium' sized? Give us a dog analogy perhaps? Labrador? Great Dane? Kelpie?

I would say about Labrador size but it was too dark and fast to see clearly. I couldn’t make out any limbs or clear shape as such. I only saw an indistinct profile as it moved in front of lighter coloured ferns. I was going to say also that the tree break sounded similar to the crack of a whip.

I will keep my eyes on the area and if I discover a rational explanation I will follow up on this thread.

Wow! 2005 (eek) sure has been a while!
Some strange reports pop up from that area every now and then, from Tasmanian Tigers, Puma's / Panthers, Thylacoleo and Yowies
The area joins onto farming land around Logan river to Yatala and Coomera that join Tamborine via the Ormeau area.
To give perspective on predatory animal movements in one night, a mountain lion can travel 12km, I've made a quick map showing what 12km looks like for a possible route.
Don't be too quick to dismiss reports in "built up" areas.

A couple of weeks afterwards, I saw some swamp wallabies in the area and they are a bit darker coloured than the more common red-necked wallabies that are everywhere. Perhaps that's all it was but I haven't quite convinced myself yet. I like to believe in something mysterious!

It is interesting you mention cats because a number of months back I saw something shoot across the road in the same area. Something black and long darted across the road following the creek. I was probably 200m away and it was gone almost as quickly as I looked at it. At the time I thought to myself "Well that's a bit odd. I wonder what that was". It was bigger than a domestic cat so a wild cat could fit what I saw. People keep chickens in the area so certainly something a cat would be interested in.
