Interesting Story - Innisfail/Tully region

Hi All.

I was at a BBQ last week and met up with a guy from Innisfail who had an interesting story that I'll try to relate as best as I can recall.

It was about 10 years ago and this guy and his mate had been at a party all night (I think it was around Innisfail) and after leaving the party in the early morning hours his mate wanted him to drive to a place to pick some mushrooms.

As they were driving along a remote dirt road the driver noticed a guy sitting in the grass about 50 metres off the road holding a fishing rod. He mentioned this to his mate (who didn't see him) and they continued on with their mission to find some mushies.

They had to travel for a while before turing back for home and a couple of hours later they passed the same spot and this guy was still sitting in the grass holding his fishing rod.

The driver pulled over and approached the guy to see if he was ok. He said the bloke barley registered his presence and appeared to be borderline catatonic. He could see smething wasn't right so he basically picked him up off the ground and walked him to the car before driving him into town and dropping him off. For the entire time this bloke did not speak a single word and just had this blank stare on his face.

The two guys in the car thought the whole thing was a bit strange but didn't think too much about it until about a week or two later when they started to hear reports of what had happened (it may have appeared in the local papers).

Anyway, they found out that after they had dropped this guy off he went to the police station to report what had happened. He had been camping at one of the local gorges when in the middle of the night something attacked his camp. He was asleep in his tent when something started ripping it to shreds. As he ran from the tent he grabbed the closest thing to defend himself (his fishing rod) and then fled into the night and never looked back. He kept running until he reached the spot where he was found.

The place he was camping was known to locals and the police apparently drove out there to follow up on the report. They found his camp site totally destroyed and his belongings strewn throughout the gorge.

Has anyone heard of this report? I don't know if the word "Yowie" was ever mentioned to police but there seems to be some consistency with other encounters and the state of mind of the "witness" seems to suggest that something out of the ordinary took place that night.

Sounds eerily like a Yowie encounter all right, :? poor bloke, he must have really been in a daze.

This link here talks of the Tully Yowie http://home.clara.net/rfthomas/news/deepin.html

Thanks Chewy.

It's interesting that the link you sent me also refers to Tully and the short rainforest Aborigines that were apparently photographed by a bulldozer operator circa 1963.
