Thermal imaging

I just wanted to ask if anyone has used thermal imaging in any hunts in AU?
I have thought many times of buying one myself but due to the cost needless to say I always have to ask myself again "Do I really need or want one and be out of pocket big time?"
It perked my interest again as I saw one for roughly $4000.
They have worked in other kinds of investigations so I wouldn't mind betting it could be an awesome tool at night once the majority of the heat from the day has come off things like rocks ect.

Hi Kirsty,
Of course, we have wanted one for many years but the price of the Flir models that we desired were always in the vicinity of 16K+
There are many models available and some are only 'view' rather than record. Some have to be plugged into a Handycam, while others have their own storage capacity. Screen sizing varies, as too the battery life. Many variances to consider.
At the cost of renting them, you could buy one for the retail price in just over a Week.
At the end of the day, it would be more than beneficial to have one in our inventory because there are many researchers that could share it.
There has been some banter over the past year or so regarding a few trusted people putting in 1k each.

Hi Dean!
Yes the cost is mind blowing! hence what has put me and 3 other friends off them for some time.
There is this one here though that could be a good base start:
http://www.flir.com.au/products/FLIRi5.aspx
It's only single image but would still give a good idea scoping in the dark and if you DO get something, take the shot (grab SD cards off ebay, way cheaper)
That is what I was thinking of trying to get and when I am rich one day *cough robabank cough* I will sell that one and put it towards a bigger fancy once
You guys sound like some needed fund raising is in order one day

Yeah in all honesty I wouldn't even consider going somewhere like Deua or such without one, cos u just know how quiet these fellas can be out there! Nightvision is ht & miss whereas thermal doesnt lie. I note the bushfire folks are getting long range thermal cameras installed around some NPs to help in fire spotting as well as picking out 'arsonists'

Don't know if this is of any use or anything, but try something like this:

DIY IR Camera. Tech types out there, step up & see if its worth it?

For a IR I would rather just buy one

But just proves what you can do with a old cast off and some spare time!!!
Now, if you see some clever clogs making a thermal imaging camera out of his $50 point and shoot, PLEASE send him my way

I would let him tinker away with my good digital camera for that!!!

I'm going to buy an old one and have a bit of a muck about with it. If it works out, i'll let everyone know. If not, i'll post pics of my epic failure in the field of technology

Hell yes. Cup holders are an essential.

on the subject of thermal imaging, keep an eye out for the "Don Young footage" on the BFRO website, its supposed to be released in a couple days.
his written encounter is available now. http:

I believe this may be the footage you where talking about lil foot

The guy who is using the camera is a bit of a noob he keeps focusing the camera on the wrong area panning it side to side when clearly he has something on thermal image.
Very hard to make out if its real.

Nice footage. Thanks for finding that Chewy.
Here is another interesting one. I didn't read the text, because I can't read, but the pictures at the bottom on the page caught my interest

has anyone seen a recent stealth cam video footage recently on one of US wesites, it is about 10 seconds long, black and white and shows what appears to be a primate looking up at the camera ( fitted to a tree), at first glance it seems to be a gorilla, the last 3 seconds of the footage shows it walking away bipedally and quite upright, has anyone else seen it and if so where ...cos iv'e forgotten where i saw it.

Nope it was video footage taken from a camera mounted up in a tree, looking down at an ape head and shoulders..ape staring up..blinking then walks off , it's then that you see clearly that it is walking erect , bibedally, the footage only goes for about10 seconds and seems to be from a stealth cam with video capability, i saw it whilst surfing use search words like saquatch sightings or bigfoot sightings, i thought it was faily convincing footage...hope someone can find it again
cheers
( geez i hope Melb not too cold BBRRRRR )

You mean this one. The more i look at it, it seems it's a person in a suit. The eyes didn't seem to have life in them.
I think with a well thought out coordinated effort us Aussies can rock the world with decent footage of a Yowie.

Hi YL1,
Yes that was the footage Topender was referring to. It is interesting, however yet another one of the hundred’s of pieces of footage that will most likely never be proven or debunked.
Its left hand is bent around behind its arm, and there seems to be a (cough…..), penis present as it moves off.
Thanks for finding it.

yep yep yep
what i find interesting is the pelvis is verticle, apes cannot walk like that, their pelvis is rotated slightly forward, and the gait is very fluid like a human...oh and yes i did see he has a winkey...interesting piece of footage, ps :GEE WHIZ i love Melbourne weather...bbrrrrrrr
cheers all

Great footage Topender!
One thing that puzzles me about the cam, why did it cut off so early? I thought those cam's went for another 20 or so seconds unless it has been edited.

I got a cam lasso. You can set filming time from 1 to 60 seconds and at intervals up to 10 minutes apart i think. Will post some camera footage on youtube soon for the forum. I have a couple of videos to make before i do though. Give me a couple of days.

Unfortunately, the 'trail cam' footage is just film of "oliver the chimp"... here's the link:

No worries,
Yeah you're absolutely right Tops, for years there was conjecture that this chimp may have come from an undiscovered sub-species and may be the 'missing link' so to speak... there were even people who thought that he may have been a half human hybrid, fuelled by his strange appearance, his inability to interact with other chimps and his preferance to human company.
I believe in the end he was considered through DNA testing to be 100% chimpanzee, however to look at him... some of his features are almost human-like... one thing is for sure- his effortless ability to ambulate bipedally is quite amazing. If anyone gets the chance, they should watch the doco on youtube about him, it's pretty interesting...
Cheers,
Anonimust.
