Attracting the yowie.
This is in conjunction with the trip post.
What are the best attractants for them? Or how to get their attention, apart from just walking into their territory.
What would piss them off (which is something I do NOT want to do)?

Re: Attracting the yowie.
I am no Yowie expert, so I will just give some opinions
Do you guys have a time at which you will be going bush Day/Night?
If day then I would just put my efforts into looking for evidence. Tree breaks, footprints etc.
If night then you might suggest wood knocking or something to attract him/her. I once tried wood knocking during the day at an isolated part near Noojee Vic only to have an old man come wondering out of the bush with his dog, I don’t know who got more of a surprise me or him.
You could always try cooking something up as well but I’m sure you guys would have thought of these things already by now.
Just some suggestions

Re: Attracting the yowie.
gday deadpool
ive read alot of reports from the states which involve encounters with the big fella while camping, and after cooking up a camp dinner. and one item it tends to drool over is the smell of bacon being fried (WHO WOULDNT !)
maybe you could do this, then leave some leftovers in some trees with a motion cam set up.
also among the hot baits seems to be apples and believe it or not, children. got any handy? It seems to be curious with the little ones.
not that i would use this technique

Just take notes from byteys thread, roll in peanut butter n' honey and wait for the yowie of love to swagger your way
Nah truly what was suggested about the bacon seems to run true through most forums I have read like lil foot said. Can't hurt to have a go huh?
And they don't seem to like light judging by threads on the BF/Yowie topic so maybe a dim lit camp would be handy?

...lol!!!...there's a couple of kids next door that woke me up from an alcohol induced sleep-in on Sunday morning that I may be able to supply!!!!... little buggers!!!... methinks that a Yowie may be able to control them better than their own parent's are able to somehow!... lol!!!...lil foot wrote: also among the hot baits seems to be apples and believe it or not, children. got any handy? Re: Attracting the yowie.
yeah after lots and lots of report reading both here in in the Yoo Ess of Ay, i have decided to use the good ol bacon fat, i have collected the last 2 months worth of Sunday morning bacon n eggs grease for this purpose,
PLAN A: recce a suitable area ( hopefully with trusty offsider " iwanttobelieve") set up the Stealth cam near a used corridor and smear bacon fat on trees at about 5 to 7ft mark, then with the wafting breeze the yowies will come floating through the air to the bait with nostrils flared, just like in the cartoons..THEN snappo we have a photo, if that doesn't work then i guess we will just sit very still and quiet , thinking peacefull friendly thoughts and hope our friend passes by.....ive gotta stop watching cartoons

Re: Attracting the yowie.
Hi All.
Pixie recommends peanut butter rolls and bananas as favoured food gifts.
Not sure if this is true but I've also heard that menstrual blood also works as an attractant. I don't have any myself so I might just stick with bacon and anything else that can be easily obtained from a reputable supermarket.
Also, I think Dean mentioned using mullet in one of his posts.

Re: Attracting the yowie.
Hi Iwantto,
Mullet was a concept we had which was stemmed by the idea that it would have smelt very strong and would most certainly be foreign to the forest, therefore interesting. On both occasions we appeared to gain a reaction.
Menstrual blood/second hand tampons have been used in the past (not by us - I couldn't fathom requesting donations). The pheromones apparently heighten their "emotions".
I recall a case I investigated near Esk some years ago, where a couple (He 50 - She 18, I have no idea how that happened, other than she was the daughter of his Ex best friend, but thats a whole other story for another time....) had to move off the property for 5 or so days per month because the Yowies allegedly came from everywhere after dusk and they were awake each night, wide eyed and grasping a shot gun.
On another occasion, they said they were sitting in a tent "talking" (cough...), on this property when a long black hairy finger poked its way through a split in the lining and was feeling around. She screams and "it" ran away.
Now that I have myself totally off track as per usual, rambling about unrelated issues, one interesting story they shared was in regard to all the broken and twisted branches we seem to find. One morning they heard two of them walk past their tent into the bush line. They both peered out the flap and said one of them, while walking along, was reaching for branches, and breaking and twisting for no apparent reason as he made his way merrily though the forest. I have always suspected that perhaps some of these break & twists have no meaning other than pure bordom.

Re: Attracting the yowie.
I know the pheromone theory has been discussed before, but our hairy mate seems to find teenage girls and/or scent
" au de ca-woman" very atractive, i wonder how effective primate urine would be as an attractant, i know a chap up here who runs an Animal Park ( Crocodylus Park) to be exact, he has a variety of primates ....mmmmm, does anyone else knoew how to get hold of " extract of Mrs Gorilla ", anybody have any contacts?.
I think it would cause a stampede of randy male yowies... this process is used very successfully for Dingos, Feral dogs and cats.
The other thought is could synthetic scent be available?

Re: Attracting the yowie.
Can I be the first to say that I'm NOT going to be the one who milks a gorilla for topender...
But to go back to the thread, just this afternoon I've been out for a wander with Anonimust - last time we were at this site we found a bush lemon bitten in half (eeuuwww), so while we were there today I've left a couple of mandarins in some trees... we'll see how we go...

Re: Attracting the yowie.
You could always try doing something like that guy in America whose house got raided by the cops during a drug bust.Dean Harrison wrote:Menstrual blood/second hand tampons have been used in the past (not by us - I couldn't fathom requesting donations).
They found dozens of used tampons in his freezer so they arrested him for the drugs and suspicion of being a weirdo-fetish-serial killer.
Turns out he was working at a service station and each night he would clean out the sanitary bins and keep the tampons for bear hunting.
Don't know if I'm that keen to test the heightened "emotion" theory. An emotional Yowie might not be as much fun as it sounds.
From what Pixie tells me the best thing to do is have some sort of offering (food), put out a good vibe, mind your manners and let them come to you.

Re: Attracting the yowie.
I've heard a woman during 'that time of the month' attracts the same kind of attention. All to do with the pheromones, as everyone has been saying.
I'm probably going to cop a lot of flak for this, but a guys.. wossname, would that work? Same kind of thing, in a way. It seems to be the whole sexual/breeding type thing.

Re: Attracting the yowie.
fortunately or unfortunately as the case may be, to the best of my knowledge us blokes don't give off a pheromone..stinky...sexy smelly thing, apes maybe different, blokes are generally " up for it" any time.
I'm not too sure what smell would attract a female Yowie. I have heard that babies crying tends to attract yowies. maybe it's female that respond to it, same as a baby crying will make woman lactate.
I think the odour attractant theory has some valid due, would be nice to know what synthetic attractants would work.
cheers

Thank you Iwantto!.
I think those are all idears
but not all of them will get the result your hopping for, I think you all know the items your probably better off leaving out, induce pheromone can be set off by play and laughter too don't forget,
No Dean not that play, behave!
here you go some samples from my food prep records,
I can make up to 30 of these a week not at the same site and they are always enjoyed and appreciated .

Hi Pixie
Man..i cannot believe the amount of tucker you put out for them, i gather there is a large degree of trust and relationship going on, i loved the letter from your young fella..cute
this reminds me of what the Aboriginal elder told me about entering areas or gorges known to be Yowie land, he said you need to think like your going into a church and be respectfull and humble cos the brugitjit ( yowie) can see your thinking. i thought about that several times and coupled with stuff that you and Dean have said, it makes sense
thanks for your wisdom Pix.
Cheers

What's the go with the flowers?
Are they ornamental or do Yowies eat them?
