Active Research
Anyone up to anything? Dean, Joe, anyone?
Not after secret case files or anything, but would love to see how others go about conducting and documenting their research...

If you mean Mikka's next one I can't actually make it unfortunately.
I didn't mean planned upcoming trips, I meant more like ongoing or recent research?

Re: Active Research
Hey FG,
You mean like continued and ongoing research concentrating on a specific location on a day to day kind of basis? Similar to what we do? Yeah, i'd be interested to see what other people are getting up to, maybe people could post some pics of tree breaks or anything else interesting that they are coming across
Btw Forestguy- good job with the video and stills, they came out good..
Thanks,
Anonimust.

Re: Active Research
Yeah, that's exactly right.
We're pretty good on the forum at sharing a yarn or a theory, but I'd love to see some more sharing of actual research and technique, like we're trying to do with our stuff.
For example, at the top of the thread I mentioned Dean and Joe because I though that they were regularly in the field rather than only on the occasional get together with other members. Maybe I'm wrong about that?
Yeah, the stills came up ok - any suggestions on them anyone? We still need to go back and measure out the stride, I forgot to get it...
Also - Forum Gods. Is there a problem with the server again at the moment? Dean had made another post in this thread last night that was gone this morning...
Cheers,
FG

Hey Seeker - thanks mate. As I've said previously, I don't expect anyone to share their locations or other identifying details - I was talking more about techniques, examples, etc.
I think maybe Sticky's answered my query in the other thread:

I really like the way you guys post photos and feedback about your ongoing research. Please keep them going as I think they present the best example of what active researchers are doing and it is always interesting to read through your reports and study your photos.
You guys are pioneering the way reports should be delivered so please keep it up and hopefully more will follow your example. We need more posts like yours so the forum feels active and relevant.
I only wish I had my own reports to share but we're working on it. Hopefully myself and Tops will be able to get out soon and provide our own journal of active research.
Please keep it up!

Lasso, Chewy and Myself are heading to Pixies today for a sleep over, then depending on whether I'm feeling well enough, may gate crash Mikka's crew tomorrow night.

Good point..I think the problem is....that other than tree damage/piles of sticks or rocks (kids???)....there aint much worth reporting/sharing ..but I'd love to see some more sharing of actual research and technique, like we're trying to do with our stuff.
The witnesses are great...but ...you could i/v a thousand witnesses and get where exactly..??
Joe has been doing some great stuff with footprints/casting..
Where my print you promised me..
Lets face it...other than witnesses...the only decent secondary "evidence" is plaster casts/photos of prints...
The rest is.....pretty ordinary..

Re: Active Research
I've been busy procrastinating over a three thousand word essay (which was naturally slapped together in the last 12 hours), so don't ask me how I missed this gem of a thread! As for active research, I tend to be spasmodic in my approach - not one to let the little monkeys get used to a routine! That said, I do have 2 sites on the go at the moment, both holding much promise.
I'm happy to broadcast my findings as they appear, but I'm reluctant to do so unless they are of particular interest, or an ongoing significant feature that other board members may benefit from.
As mbwmbwmbwmbw indicated, one of these sites has turned out a treasure trove of very humanish footprints, and yes, I'll crack open the rubber latex and make good on that promise...

Re: Active Research
Hi Mike/Joe.
Mike - yeah, I agree that's a problem, but I think there's even benefit in sharing things like the tree damage/sticks & rocks so others can get an idea of what's happening in other sites - maybe even pick up on similarities etc.
Also letting others see how you can actually conduct your research and document it - we never know who's going to be the one who stumbles across something really interesting/important.
Joe - sounds like you're onto a good spot - any photos of those prints you want to share with the board?
Thanks both for adding your thoughts to this thread.
Tim

Re: Active Research
Hey Tim
One day.groan...I will find the video of it...I am the worst at labelling..
Turn up to witnesses house, have a brief chat, try and work out if they are deluded..wander round..find nothing..stay around at night..see/hear nothing..wander off.
Or..
Go to "hot" location..find bugger all...go home.
I am just too lazy to bother making any form of "report" when the "results" are so lame anyway...
I am fairly cynical since some of us realise that a % of witnesses
1/are nuts
2/are on the way to be nuts
3/have nothing other than an interesting anecdote
4/are rational with an interesting anecdote and nothing else..
As a side note..I find it really interesting to find yowie locations/witnesses have many similarities from when I "research" haunted locations or paranormal phenomena...or even big cat reports...their is no dividing line sometimes in some areas..
I know of properties in Victoria which get big cats/light phenomena and bipedal something prancing round....do I understand that...of course not...
I am not after a definite answer...I have given up looking for it.....it aint there.....
I just enjoy dipping my toes into the madness...
Mike
I tend to disregard all tree damage...no..I am not saying all damage in all areas is just birds..but..we have seen the damage to trees by cockatoos up here..in daylight..and if the birds had not been seen...they would have been labelled as odd.but I think there's even benefit in sharing things like the tree damage
One day.groan...I will find the video of it...I am the worst at labelling..
I always assume its kids..no..I am not saying all odd stick/rock "collections" are just kids...but until I see some in a really remote area which I have not so far ...then I disregard the ones I do see.sticks & rocks
Sure..but the "danger" is...that we will sometimes mistake things as being odd..labelling them as such(when they are the result of wind/storms/birds/kids etc)..others see our label and "id"...then others state they have found the same thing...and we all end up deluded..and frustrated..so others can get an idea of what's happening in other sites - maybe even pick up on similarities etc.
"conduct" and "research" sounds too precise..Also letting others see how you can actually conduct your research

Hehehe
At least you guys get out there and poke around and have a go.!!
So many people "interested" in unusual stuff do bugger all.
But they will have no qualms turning around and boring you with what they think any weird phenomena is..
Why would anyone care what 'they' think..??
