Hi Guys as you all know im putting a small Expedition together in march. I was woundering what type of lighting do you guys use in the feild, now i dont have Mega Bucks to buy those i think there called sunlight or somthing along those lines. I was woundering about LED type hand held tourches,and do you think they would stop a possible Yowie from charghing. Mind you i would c**p myself before i could turn the bloody torch on.

Any help on this matter would be great guys.

Any high powered torch will do the trick bush baby.

I don’t have a preference as to the torch as long as it is powerfull

Mate look up SUREFIRE flashlights on the net, they are not cheap but they will pretty much blind anything.

I have one of the Ultra fire range & its awesome.
I also have a Mill tech LED thats pretty bright.Search the net for them also.
Don't head out bush with a cheap light.

I just bought a 10 million candle power handheld spotlight(just) from REPCO in there after Christmas sale. It was $100 and it is like the light from the Batman movie! It also has a dim switch for up close stuff and a shoulder strap and stand. It has a rechargeable lead acid battery that runs it for an hour or it can run straight from a car cigarette lighter. I am keen to
go on a Blue Mountains trip if you want to go before Feb 28th when I have to go back to work? I have a Triton that will go up most fire trails but other than that it will be my first trip..

Reliable (and expensive) torches are ideal. However, I only use the lower-end of the market products and don't have any complaints. Either way, always take plenty of backup lighting.

A headtorch is good when you are walking about at night as it keeps your hands free. Combined with a handheld L.E.D. torch it provides ample lighting for the immediate area. They also can pick up eye shine from well beyond their lighting range. If you pick up eye shine from a distance then you need to bring out some more specialised lighting.

I have a you-beaut-tan-a-pommie-from-200-metres halogen torch with a shoulder strap but I find it is generally too bulky and cumbersome for long-distance night trekking. A common "Dolphin" torch is sufficient to help identify the source of eyeshine from a distance.

Dismiss fears of Yowies charging in to assault you. Reports of Yowie aggression are uncommon and reports of actual assaults are almost non-existent. It appears that most examples of aggression are, like those of gorillas, mostly for show. Personally, I feel that walking into Yowie territory with thoughts of fear is counter-productive. Be calm and strong. Resist the fear and show respect - it is THEIR home, afterall.

Always, always, ALWAYS have a flash camera ready. You just never know...

Thanks for the Ideas guys on the lighting i have put a nice little arsonel together in Lighting. Speaking of flash cameras yes i have 4 different types to take along as well as a few IR Sony handy cams as well. A report will be submitted for sure as soon as we get back. Hey we might not get jack but as you said nightwalker you never know (always pack clean undies llol).

Are you planning on taking any food 'gifts' for the local inhabitants? Things you can string up out of reach of wallabies possums etc, like fresh fruits? Might go a long way to fostering positive interactions in the future.

Thanks Shazz yes will be putting food out around camp. Actuly thers are post on that topic alone. I will give full report of the weekend for sure.

My mate got one of those and I dubbed it "rocket launcher" as its how he carried it Great to have if you know someone in the USA and import the good bulbs as you cant get the good ones here when they blow

Welcome to the forum

To answer your question Yowies are predominantly nocturnal therefore they are used to no light source or very little of it anyway other than moonlight.

A light source just helps stun them for a bit, not that I have ever tried it, But ive heard its a good way of protecting yourself if anything was to happen.

Tyko7 good question mate The Big Guy seems to be Nocturnal But one wonders if they can switch there optics somehow from night to dark maybe along the lines like a sony night shot. Night they go to IR day they can switch over to normal vision,I dont know for sure tyko it just a guess mate....
