Conimbla National Park

Greetings all,

I am a new member and this is my first post, although I have visited the site as a guest for about 6 months. Thought I would share my experiences which all occured before knowing about this website or the Yowie in general. This one happened in Conimbla National Park in April 2008 (this Nat. Park is located west of Cowra in NSW) on a weekday between 10am and noon. Just to be clear though - I have not seen or heard a Yowie.

I was hiking in this park alone on one of the marked trails. About 20-25 minutes into the hike there was an area of bush land that was odd. There were a few dead trees and a lot of tree breaks that I have read about on these pages. These continued for several minutes along the track. It was during this part of the hike that I suddenly had this 'sure' feeling of being watched by something. I have hiked a lot over the years and in a lot of national parks and yet this is only the second time I have felt this strong sensation of being watched. I thought there might have been some phsycho out there with me. Anyway I remember thinking to myself that it was a 2 hour round hike and that I should turn back to my car - BUT - I had a very strong intuitive thought that this would not be wise and that I should continue the hike as planned - going deeper into the bush and against logical judgement. Anyway this is what I did and after a few minutes and once I was clear of the 'tree break area' and dead trees the intense feeling of being watched subsided and eventually everything returned to normal - ie animal noises such as birds returned as well.

I continued the hike and passed other areas with dead trees, but no tree breaks, and there was no sensation. The hike goes on to two lookouts over gorges/valleys and they are very isolated and the furtherest away from the car. And yet at the most logical/isolated point in the hike when someone is most likely to be paranoid or experience such feelings, all was normal and the return hike along a different route was also without incident. I just find it odd to experience something like this early into the hike and yet continuing on and having no repeat once through the 'tree snap' area. I remember thinking to myself before encountering this site that the tree snaps were weird and I wondered what sort of storm could have done such things as these were 3 - 4 inch thick trees and some had been snapped near the base and others about 1m to 1.5m off the ground.

Not much of an experience I know but that 'sure' feeling sort of stays with you, I can still remember the intensity of it. (I have hiked a lot of NP's including Blue Mountains, Kanagra Boyd, Wollemi, Brisbane Waters, Royal NP, Kosiosko, Barrington Tops, and I drove down Tablelands road in December 2008 and never felt anything like this except....in the Pilliga Nature Reserve, similar to above).

Question: Have there been any reports of Yowie Activity in Conimbla National Park or the surrounding towns of Cowra / Grenfell / Gooloogong / Conimbla (that form a border around this National Park) ? I would be curious to know...

Hey Tah

Welcome to the board and Thanks for sharing your experiences
That stretch of road between Young and Cowra is well known for sightings of strange things. I have heard many stories from people that use that road frequently (truck drivers especially) about the odd experiences they have had.
I am guessing by this quote that cowra has a lot of sightings.

I would be really interested to hear of your Pilliga Feelings you experienced as I had my first sighting of a yowie not far from there.

Cheers (thumb up)

Oh Man...

I was coming back from a air show at Temora about 6 months ago, and my bi**h ex (sorry) girlfriend and I drove on that highway between Young and Cowra...

There is a small town about a hour out of young, and it has a small NP or Reserve that has some falls. It is on the right heading to Cowra..

It was about 1500ish and we stopped and went for a walk..I also did not see anything but it was quite steep country very heavily foliaged as well as clearer nearby farnland..

The thing I noticed most was a distint lack of wildlife or bird sound given the hour and season and the fact there was a creek nearby...

Extremely eerie and isolated..I also felt we were being watched..

My head was like a swivel, so I imagine there would be some interesting stories to tell from regulars such as truck drivers, although we were about a Km or 2 East of the main road...

Hi Guys
I have been living in cowra for over 25 years now and have never seen or heard the big guy in this area....its not to say that he could have been passing through when you felt that presence of being watched. The last reported sighting of the yowie around this area was at Wyangler Dam 36 ks from cowra from a land survaour in the late 1800s but nothing after that.

Thanks lil foot for that my god if that report was true and i have no reason to think otherwise, it makes you wounder if they are still hear' there are so many small caves up throuh Canimbla and Broula ranges as well as a lot of wild life. Water could also be found quite readily off peoples propertys dams and the like. So yes it is worth investigating more i have spent some time in and around that area but mostly during the daylight hours it might pay to start spending some time there at night....

bb ive also heard of a few thylacine sightings in that area also, so there must be something worth doing a night stakeout for in those hills. good luck

We dident say anymore on it afterwards have never seen it on that part of the road since....isen't it amazing how someone mentiones something and your memory jogges back into gear.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your responses to my first post and apologies for not replying sooner.

Chewy, I will post the pilliga experience in here after this post - it is not much of an experience but I was also reminded of a slightly weird experience in the warrambungles so will combine them in one post.

Lil Foot, the Conimbla NP is between Cowra and Grenfell but slightly north of the highway. So I guess it tracks with the previous experience from the book (which I must get by the way) that you mentioned.

BB, not a local mate - I am from Sydney but would enjoy going to scope out the blue mountains sometime. I have been down tablelands road by myself after reading this forum but thought better of going too far on my own.

One thing that struck me on the hike that I described above was the distinct lack of wildlife at all. No signs of birds or any other animals in that area.

Cheers

The Pilliga.

A mate and I were up in Coonabarabran for a long weekend (Easter 2007) and went out to the Pilliga Sandstone Caves. It was resonably late in the afternoon, about 3:30pm and late April. So it was a well worn track and well marked from the car park. On the way to the caves there was so much bird activity, would have been a bird watchers paradise! Anyway when we got to the caves we were there a while whilst we looked around. After proceeding further around the cave / outcrop formation an eerie silence suddenly descended on the place. All of the abundant bird life suddenly stopped - it was really weird. Then we both looked at each other and my mate said "something feels strange here" or words to that effect and I said "it feels like someone is watching us". He replied that he had the same distinct impression and after about half a minute we mutually decided that heading back was a good idea and immediately left the area.

Of interesting note is that one of the caves was closed by thick cilindrical bars, about 15mm to 25 mm thick, that looked like prison cell bars from movies etc, to keep out either people from exploring that cave (or after becoming familiar with this forum perhaps it was a good place to hole up for our big friend! (taz) ) and we found that odd as well.

Anyway about 5 minutes on our way back the feeling of being watched suddenly lifted and all of the bird life seemed to return instantaneously - again very weird, like someone had flicked a switch and all life suddenly turned back on.

To conlcude whilst it was a strange experience neither of us felt that dread or fear that I have read a lot about on these forums - just a feeling that we were not alone at one particular point.

Hope it is of interest!

One more thing is that on our way back we checked out this pottery place called pilliga pottery funnily enough (http://www.pilligapottery.com.au/where.html) - and it is located on the opposite side of the highway and closer to coonabarabran. Anyway it is kind of isolate and if a few yowies are roaming around amoungst the pilliga forest then these people are in an isolated position to have an encounter if they haven't already.

Cheers
