I remembe reading about a place in oz that you drive there in your car , switch it off, and the car will roll up the hill. Anyone heard of this place and if so , is it just an illusion?

I have been to a place called magnetic mountain.

... when we first pulled the car to stop on the uphill, we immediately started to roll uphill.!!???

... after I got out of the car, I could tell it was just an optical illusion.
All of the scenery, especially the trees, seem to be playing tricks with everybody.

.... the trees all seem to be leaning uphill and that makes you feel that you are on a slope.
It looks cool, but weird, putting a can on the road and standing back to watch it roll 'uphill'.

...Tracey... I've been there too... it's a stretch of road up at Kurrajong Heights in NSW near Windsor and Richmond... on theway to Lithgow... as Trev says... I believe it to be an optical illusion too... it is an amazing bit of fun though... because all your perceptions convince you that things
ARE rolling uphill!!!

... mind you... when I went to it as a teenager with my mates... I had a few beers under my belt too... (no... I wasn't driving)... as I say... great fun... cheers... Stickyfingers.

there is also a section of road near hanging rock or mt macedon that has the same effect, i went there along time ago so not sure which rd. the horizon is hills but in front of these hills is flat grazing plains, the plains in front of the hills runs very gently up hill from one end of the road to the other but it cant be picked up by the eye as we tend to focus on the area where the plains meet the base of the hills which gives us a false horizon. all in all it messes with ya brain

Is it a bit like that feelign you get when you are on a train and the one next to you moves and you think it is your train moving?

... sorta... it kinda does... just like the feeling you get when you are in a car at some traffic lights and
the bus next to you starts to move forward slowly?.
I actually think that it feels just like when you stand in a doorway with your arms pressing against the frame for about a minute... then, you step into the middle of the room with your arms by your side and they slowly raise by themselves.

... creepy...

Thats funny...used to do that as a kid. Someone showed it to me. In fact, did some other things like that when i was a kid. I remember this thing where you would hold your breath adn someone would squeeze you and count up to a certain number and then they release you and you could pass out. A bit stupid really and not sure how that worked.

In Brisbane there is Toowong cemetery. There are a few reports of cars rolling up the hill. But you have to park the car next to the grave of the kid who was hit and killed by a car.

Just Google "Magnetic Hill" and you'll come up with a few of these, all over the world.
There is one at Black Mountain, behind Port Pirie, in South Australia that I know of, and there is supposed to be one in Brisbane, near Mount Cotton, but I have that only as hearsay.
Kind regards,
Shazz

I think I have heard of one near Port Pirie also. This shows you the illusion of going backwards.

As far as I am aware, Newton can rest easy. A larger mass attracts a smaller mass. As the earth itself is the largest mass we will experience, all mass is attracted to its center. The only things that can influence this equation to measurable degree in our local area are the sun and of course, the moon. Thus, tides.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the trick is in the way we perceive the ground in an uphill/downhill manner, depending on the surrounding landmasses. It LOOKS like the car is rolling uphill, but that's an optical illusion.
Kind regards,

I have been to one of these magnetic hills. The one I have been to is in South Australia near the town of Petersborough. Here are a couple of links that mention this site and one has directions on how to get there.

http://www.southaustralia.com/9000960.aspx
I have also attached two of my own pictures to help explain. One original and one with arrows etc. Basically you drive to this location and proceed past the magnet marker (not a real magnet, it just marks the location) about 200m to where the red arrow is pointing in the picture. Turn the car off, put it in neutral and then the car rolls up the hill towards the magnet marker for a couple of hundred metres.
Where the photo is taken you can see that past the marker towards where the photo was taken the road crests and starts to go down hill, but between the red arrow and the magnet marker it is up hill. I was there with an aeronautical engineer who works for Airbus in Toulouse, France. We could not work it out. We did drive the car down and rolled up hill 3 times to try to work out the illusion, but we couldn't! It is an interesting spot and experience!!
Cheers,

Thats interesting. I wonder if a billy cart would roll up hill also? What about a ball or something that would roll...did you try that?
Strange that you couldnt work out the illusion. It must have something to do with slopes around and the way the road digs into the slopes.
Wonder what a spirit level would show if placed on the road

I agree it was strange, and we had some kms to cover to make broken hill to keep on schedule. We were sure it had to be with the slope of the land causing an optical illusion but it was not obvious. A spirit level would have been ideal to settle it!! Perhaps if I plan to be that way again sometime I will pack one in the car!
On the note about a ball or a billy cart, the road is dirt/gravel and so I think that there would be too much friction with those objects to get a reasonable result.
Cheers

Yes we must all carry spirit Levels for times like these.
I am not sure it would work with a kart. I think it would be to light even if there was no stone.
Would be a good test to try.

Years ago I entertained myself in Bumper to Bumper peak hour traffic. Put your car in gear in reverse to the traffic flow or hill. If the driver beside you was dozing off , reading a paper or just not being aware. Slowly move uphill and toot your horn not looking at them. you can see instant panic in their eyes trying to put more pressure on the brake, pull harder on the hand brake etc. looking for who tooted.
Also funny to do it in multi level underground car parks, Myers Brisbane is a great spot. Be prepared for abuse though.

Hi all,
There is a place near tamworth on the first moonbi hill where you stop and roll up hill it is definately an optical illusion. Have taken a four foot level there and it is down hill not uphill. No magnetic feild or unexplained forces involved, and you dont even have to be wasted lol, pretty cool illusion though.
Cheers

The one in Mt Cotton in Brisbane is at the top of Mount View Rd, just as you come over the last crest and left hand bend.
Go to the top and turn around and come back. When you reach the bottom of that top hill you can stop and put in neutral.
Taking your foot off the brake will allow the car to slowly start rolling forward and the car will go back over the crest of the hill - seemingly rolling uphill.
We called it 'Spooks Hill' back in the day. We'd take our gf's up there and then trick them into running away by yelling the coppers are coming.. We'd be rolling around laughing while they would be halfway across a paddock.. or caught on a barbed wire fence.. So funny everytime.. Makes me wanna do it all again..
