i move to townsville in 1986 and lived in the upper ross area most of that . iv had many encounters with the smaller yowies 4 to 5 foot kind . mainly near the river and the dam .... the enconuters iv had are everything for the feeling of being watched to something coming crashing through the bush and jumping into the creek whilst camping by the river . to the time i was have a smoke in my girl friends backyard and heard something jump the fence i thought it was a thief nick clothes off the clothes lines ( wish it was a thief) and coming face to face with the little beasty it just looked at me and kept on its way if i could have turned and ran screaming like a little girl i would have but i froze how ever i did get a very colse look at it for the street lights shining from the street ........................... just wondering if anyone else from this area has had any sightings or encounters or if anyone has some good info on these little yowies

Hi watcher...I think you might find some information on the smaller yowies in The Yowie file by Cropper and healy.
Did you take any photos/casts of any odd prints up there in the hot spot.

I believe there is also a reference elsewhere on this site to the Junjadee (smaller yowie species) and its liking of tobacco.
What surprised me so much when reading through the stories about the Junjadee were the remarkably similar tales from vastly disparate sources of people camping out in the bush... such as those in miners huts, being awoken at night by a Junjadee wanting to wrestle with them.
Some of these witnesses would swear that it had happened to them, but they had never spoken out previously because of fear of ridicule... and they thought that no one would believe them.
I wonder if they would have felt quite the same way if they had been able to read some of the stories of others who claimed to have had very similar experiences.
I guess that is one of the things I like about this site. People can post their experiences without fear or being ridiculed or being judged.

Hi Watcher
I have lived in Townsville since early 70's and can remember when the area you talk about was just bush and the dam was being built , but I have never heard of any reports before . i used to hunt along the river banks and know quite a few who have been out to the dam area and none of them have ever seen anything , if they have they aren't saying.

Hey Mike
Being a newby to actual field research what is the best method of casting foot / hand prints I found a large print this weekend although it was in deep leaf litter , I took a photo with my foot along side for size comparison but due to the substance the print was left in , it was not clear enough to post .
Another researcher draws an outline around his findings but I feel this could be discounted by the skeptics as it would be to easy to over exagerate the print , I have seen Deans you tube footage with him showing what looks to be a latex cast . Do you have any recomendations where I might source these types of products .
Cheers ..

Hey Al

Plaster of paris...or if you want a very strong cast that is light then Boral casting plaster available from hardware stores..or from barnes moulding stores something like hydrostone.
For crumbly damp soil/sand we have used hairspray to good effect for "sealing" the print..before you cast it...the casting liquid is made to be the same consistency as thick milk.

Yep..anything in leaf litter can be a problem..

Valid point..and even without the 'outline" some of those prints look a little too perfect
.....but... "sceptics" do not accept any casts anyway that dont fit into their philosophical belief system..they will just cry foul/fake..etc..
I have asked them before, how we can cast/collect anything, anywhere..without them popping up like a humourless jack in the box..screeching "hoax"..
The answer they often choose.. from the "Idiots Guide To Skeptics Handbook"..is normally number 1.
1/Remain silent.
2/Ad Hominem in 3 steps.
3/Ex-Cathedra Statements.
4/Appeal to Authority.
I have seen Deans you tube footage with him showing what looks to be a latex cast . Do you have any recomendations where I might source these types of products .
Was he pouring latex into a print..or is it a latex copy of a cast..?
We have tried pouring all sorts of different liquids and products direct into the prints as experiments..2 part plastic was not too bad.
We even use a two part silicon putty..for copying scratches off trees and copying simple casts.
The last time I used the putty..was a very hot day..I was making sure it was mixed properly..and ended up with something that looked like a giant pizza base..
It had gone off before I could slap it onto the cast..
"J.B." here in the forum is the king of actual moulding/casting...we both had basic training with a taxidermist....
Barnes is the best...for silicon/latex..etc

Thanks Heaps for those tips Mike , very informative , you are to kind I just hope my wife won't susspect to much when her hairspray goes missing next weekend . I have been told of a popular camping spot north of Woolgoolga that has had some recent activity .
I plan on heading out there on the 13.02.10 it is near to the coast but extremely remote Iam sure it would be an ideal location , the soil in that area is semi composted to fresh sand types with many differing forrest types such as eucalypt both natural and plantation also large stands of commercial pine forrest , to my mind a very good starting point indeed . Iam off to the hardware to stock up so thanks again .
MY FINAL DECISION IS MAYBE ...............

Oh Al, wow wow wow! If you get some plaster casts, then please, PLEEZE post them! I can't wait to see them.
And Watcher's encounters with small Yowies are fascinating. I'd rather encounter small than large up close and personal, LOL.

I know what you mean about the "feeling of being watched". I've had that experience too, in both Texas and Oklahoma, and it's unmistakable. But I've NEVER had any BF sighting whatsoever, and I'm very envious of those who have seen one (or more), be it BF in the USA, or Yowies in Australia.

I work with Aboriginal people here in WA.
One of my co-workers originates from the Herberton Area in the Atherton Tablelands.
Recently we were having a discussion in regards to aboriginal folklore. During this session I was told the following -
The Aboriginals of the Herberton area very rarely travel at night due to the presence of the "Bigfoots", I was given the dialect name but have forgotten it.
Apparently there are areas/mountains within the tablelands which are taboo for the local tribes as these are the domain of the Bigfoots. The local people will not camp in these areas as they know the bigfoot will challenge them.
I was told the area around Tinaroo is a prolific area for bigfoot encounters. The locals say that there are caves above Tinaroo where these creatures sleep. And that in the past people entering these hills have disappeared.
Apparently when the Tianaroo Dam was constructed there were no locals willing to work in the surrounding bush!!
Another more scary story told was of a BBQ held at a house on the outskirts of Herberton. As the group were sitting down to eat. A creature jumped over the backfence. It snatched some food off of a table, and when challenged by the men present it growled and in one leap clambered onto the roof. Queenslander style house so roof was high. The creature sat on its haunches and started to eat. The creature was described as approx 5'6'' and skinny but muscular build, covered lightly in dark hair with a monkey type face and canine teeth visible. The eyes were dark. The creature after a short time of remonstrating at the scared people took just one leap to the ground and leapt over the fence and disappeared.

Has there ever been any other reports of hominids jumping that high? From what I read they could, theoretically jump over a man at a standing start. Which is not something you'd want if you're backtracking & getting the hell out of dodge.

Hey Believer
I have no doubt that our friend the Yowie would live amongst the Atherton Tablelands but this story I find hard to believe, for one Yowies are very unsocial creatures unless they feel threatened, they are usually shy and reclusive but can become curious at times. For a Yowie to come out of the bush in front of people and steal a piece of food of of a table and then to jump onto the roof seems to go against Yowie lore.
But its not the first time I have heard someone say a Yowie was on their roof so who knows?

The roof climbing creature was not associated with the Yowie/Bigfoots.
I was lead to believe it is a seperate entity. I was more inclined to the smaller cheeky Jingadee?
It sounded to me like a Monkey species. I have read reports of monkey type creatures being sighted in Nth Qld?
Maybe a domestic escapee?
The Yowie Creatures are said to be more secretive and as already reported rely on stealth/ambush.
