First Yowie expedition

Hi all,

I have been reading everyones posts recently and decided to start a thread.

I currently live close to the centre of Brisbane and want to check out some areas surrounding Brisbane by that are relatively active.

I would be doing day trips walking track or to look outs. Unfortunately I dont have a hand held GPS.

Any suggestions?

Also if anyone around this area was planning a walk around one day I would greatly appreciate possibly tagging along.

Thank you all in advance.

Cheers!

Steve G. :D

I live 40 min outside Brisbane (south east) - i'm in. If you want, I can PM you extra contact details so we can actually organize this more.

Note: I don't have a car, but can organize to meet up somewhere prior.

Well like deadpool I also live in Brisbane but on the nth side, I currently have a haunt that I focused with more intent due an increase of activity, your more than welcome to join myself or Deadpool maybe we 3 could get together like the 3 musketeers...lol and go on some "excursions" of different locations, three brains and three sets of eye's would make looking for easier due to 1 who might miss something as opposed to three finding it....

Three sets of brains and three different mindsets always help. Therefore you can discern what is/isn't worth taking a further look at.

I'd suggest day trips first, to check the area for recent activity (fresh tree-breaks & whatnot) and warrant a further night-time checkout. I mean hell, for all we know we could get lucky and find more than just tree-breaks during the day. If it was a night-time trip, we'd have to pre-plan it more o'course, and bring along the right gear, etc.

40 mins from the centre of Brisbane, in which direction Steve?

I know some excellent spots around the north-west fringe, great places for a wander even if you don't find anything other than fresh air, quiet trails and wildlife. If you are northwest, I can PM you some interesting spots - probably best kept out of the public eye so that they remain as special as they are now.

Any Brisbanites into the natural surrounds should try and pick up a copy of a book called "Brisbance Back Door - The Story of the D'Aguilar Range" written by Helen Horton (ISBN: 0 864 39 036 X).Also "Brisbanes Wild Places", can't remember the author though. Good introductions into former land use, history and the general scheme of things, habitats, geology etc.

So crypto, do you reside in Brisbane???
I have been reading your posts with great interest, do you share a somewhat interest in the possibility of a large bipedal primate of unknown origin living in and around our great country, history has it that even before us white people colonized this country the indigenous population were very aware of these primates and had warned us of them, this was met with us thinking it was just superstitious mumbo jumbo but as time moved sighting of these "monsters" slowly began to emerge, but due to our urbanized advance into their realm they withdrew further into the deepest forests where we on occasions set forth to explore, but due to their curiosity of us they have on occasions made their presence felt.....
Which brings me to you, I do not wish to come across as judging your opinion, but you have forced my hand and I feel that you crytp have an underhanded motive for being on this website, I feel some here are already suspicious as to your real motive, for some1 to come here you need to have an open mind but that can't happen if the doors and windows are already shut, I have noticed you have an ability to write in a way that disparages others opinions while smiling at them...
Your writing style suggests your a little like the character Bones on the ch7 show on sunday nights......
I shall continue to observe your posts....

I politely wish to disagree, Bear.

I find Cryptobotanica's posts to be above board, and quite self effacing, if anything. Everyone here has the right to speak, and though you may harbour some suspicions of whatever nature, that's your perogative. I do find it odd though, that you feel that you need to point this out and also speak for others in the same vein?

No disrespect intended, but really, this sort of comment is not what I would deem appropriate or in the spirit of sharing and relating information.

Well that's okay what you have said, but this person has been putting a lot of disinfo on the forum which if you take time to read like some of the other members including myself are scratching heads, some of Crypto's posted posts give the impression to confuse or even lead away from the focus of what we are here for... I feel that it fine to have a difference of opinion, but disinfo is another....

Whats the difference between "disinformation" and a difference of opinion.?
Do you have to know information is false when you write it..
Because...its still "disinformation" if you have poorly researched a topic but still spout false information.
For example.
You said..
history has it that even before us white people colonized this country the indigenous population were very aware of these primates
Your statement makes it appear there are undiscovered primates(fact) here and they were known to (all?)aboriginals..and they (all?)accepted them as real..
Does that make your comment "disinformation".
Some would say..yes..
Or is it just your opinion.?
Its all in the eye of the beholder isnt it.?
All of the above is just my opinion.. (jest)

peace..
Mike

Lived in Brissie for years. NW and outer NW. The Land of Traffic Calming, heh.

Been up and down the east coast for most of my life, currently about 2hrs NW of your location. Nice spot. A lot of potential. Of course, with all this damned bush in the way ,especially the old growth forest that has NEVER been cleared and is the very "deep forest" to which you refer... and oldtimey locals to talk to, I have a hard time forming such definite opinions as those living in Townhouse-ville seem able to... my loss, I guess.

The rest of your post... Uh. What? Sorry? Forced your hand? Not wishing to judge? Ohhh k then.

Talk about ragging on ppl with a smile (lol)

Failing that, chance you could provide a few examples of my "underhanded" motive, or my disinformation?

I believe. In some cases, strongly suspect. In others, have a vague inkling at best. I do not have to believe in precisely the same manner as you, or the acknowledged "leaders in the field". The first doctor to suggest washing your hands between patients was not exactly thinking inside the box, either, and look where that got us.

I guess I have a different perspective having both a naturalist and a strongly Indigenous point of view on such matters.

I just don't need to believe every thing I read.

I actually believe there are numerous causes for what is thrown into the "yowie" basket, but among them, are genuine yowies. I believe these are compatible with other primates for breeding purposes, which has over time lead to the formation of a "grex", that is, a gene pool so muddled and a species so varied as to at times be as different from each other, as they are similar to each other.

Many tribes in fact have NO mythos relating to large hairy critters, and many that do regard em as suitable for scaring kids away from waterholes on their own, and to stop their daugters wandering off back in the old times. Others, report wholeheartedly of a real and quite worrying entity in the vicinity. So, on the topic of "disinformation"... it might be an idea to stop lumping hundreds of at times highly disparite cultural groups into the one category. "reality" for one mob is a bit of a laugh for another, and somewhere in between for yet another... it is not as simple, let alone as coherent across the nation, as the "the Aborigines say..." arguement would tend to suggest.

I never doubt another person's experience, but I do not have to agree with their conclusions. And for that matter, noone has to agree with mine

So where's the confusion exactly? Tell me, so we both know. Or are you referring to my willingness to have my own theories, and occasional (very temporary!) conclusions, rather than just swallow any old bit of data without running it thru my own critical faculties first? or that I can believe someone may be honestlym istaken (and under the influence of a dash of autosuggestion based on their reading habits...) without calling them a faker, a liar or a cheat? Meh. Could care less really.

As I think Shaz was getting at... I don't tend to take myself, or my own little theories, too seriously. In fact, I am usually pretty damned careful to make that pretty damned clear. One of the greatest injuries to science is when people confuse narrative, with reality. There is nothing wrong with narrative... it's a beautiful thing, it makes us who we are. But. Tales and myths are perhaps not as practical as some hard data.

It's like the tree breaks thing... yep, some of em are inexplicable and I know foresters who readily agree. Shame that 90 percent of photos online are entirely natural phenomena. Now, taht doesn't mean those that been "taken in" by their own wishful thinking are idiots - I just think the whole field would be better off if people who may not be as experienced in the scrub do not get distracted by the first thing they see... and instead set about finding those TRULY mysterious signs.

I'm not here to toe and party line, if that's what you're getting at. I'm also not here to pat backs and rub egos over some wind damage  But I am here because I enjoy having somewhere I can spout my strangeness among the likeminded... who may not agree with my theories, or my approach.. but just as I admire anyone iwlling to put some hard work into this field, I hope others can see that I am sincere, if nothing else.

I could come up with cutesy poo tales to go with any one of my photos, for example. But I don't. What would be the point? I'd know I was bullshitting, which'd suck, and it wold also be wasting the time of genuine researchers, many of whom have limited time, resource and energy with which to investigate claims.

I believe in a lot of occult science, for example. But I can accept the Salem trials had bugger all tod owith witches, and a lot to do with ergot poisoning and small town mentalities

Life is a work in progress and sometimes... it's hard work making any progress (lol)

Anyways... let me know where the "disinfo" is, and I'll try to sort out the mess for you.

Curiously, for any "what the hell" I recieve, I tend to recieve two or three "hey, really enjoying that! nice to see a fresh attitude! bla bla bla!" so I guess what ya lose on the roundabouts, you make up on the straights

I'd be also curious to know, on the topic of misinformation, if you ahve actually crunched the missing persons data available? There are in fact bugger all people go missing in the bush, certainly not enough to account for the dietary requirements of creatures that I would suggest would have at least a 4000ca a day requirement.

Unless they are keeping humans captve in cave sustems and making us breed for their dining tables... hey now there's a thought.

So yeah... get back to me (or back at me, which seems more appropriate). Sometime I may let you force my hand, I do love a bit of pointless ape v ape conduct... don't you? :D

Ooka - Ook, Ook!

btw, I had to google "Bones", now I know what you're on about.

I have a vague structural resemblance to that fella that used to be "Angel" (I assume he has a name, I just have NFI), if that helps you any?

Interesting POV anyway... "I am going to disparage your opinion, experience, background and manner of writing, personally, and clearly, because I believe you may at times not be in complete agreeance with other people's opinions but make an effort not to rub anyone the wrong way inspite of it".

Personally I do not feel any more alive for having the shits with, towards or about anyone in particular , but I accept that some people do... so I suspect you may end up having to play this little game on your own... but be sure to let me know who wins , won't you?

I'm confused. We went from organizing a walkabout to.. well, arguments.

C'mon kids, everyone can play in the sandpit, just don't wee in the corner. Think about that one. :D

So, lets get back on topic here: who's in, who's out. I'm in. - No BS, no arguing. I want to do this with "locals" around me. I wouldn't expect people from other states to come up here and go for a daytrip. But, also, on that, i'd be willing to fly if it was the only other option :P

Well, I was trying to help out with that. Until....

Anyways, have fun DP. (claps)

Just choose your company carefully

I'm a bit far out of town for those kinda shenanigans, but it is a lovely time of year for playing bushbunnies.

Are any S.E QLD'ers still interested in this? Work is slowing down over the next few weeks so its an opportune moment for me. If you actually do want to head out for the day - PM me & we'll organize something.

I'm sick of doing my own thing (not that I don't enjoy it), I want to cover a wider area with more people for a change. I've tried to convince friends of mine just to go out for a "walk" but they're too busy doing other things.
