I just woke up, so bear with me on the spelling & coherency of this post.

Okay, so as we all know, yowies are attracted to noises. Whistling, etc. Even the noise of a baby crying. So, an idea sprang to mind. All you'd need is a cheap tape recorder with an inbuilt speaker & sand. Simply record various sounds (crying, talking, whistling, laughter; whatever comes to mind) & leave the recorder in the middle of a patch of sand. Maybe cover it in a plastic bag so perchance it rains it won't die on you.

But either way, if they are around your area, they'll come up and have a look at this thing thats making noises. Hopefully even step on the sand. Which in that case, you have yourself a footprint - which would lead to the conclusion that you've got yourself "friends" in the area. Try and mix and match up the sounds. Hell, even leave an apple or something there. Gives them more incentive to have a good look.

(I say cheap tape recorder because, well, one might get angry and smash it to pieces )

What about a portable DVD player they can be purchased quite cheaply from bargain outlets , with a couple of cheapo' external speakers attached , not sure of the viewing preferences of our Hairy Friends perhaps Harry and The Hendersons . .

excellent concept , good lateral thinking , its often the most simple things that we overlook that are the most successful ! .

May I add that regular brickie sand has a sheen and color that's still visible in the night hours... ya may wanna add some colour to that sand to bring the "sheen" down and blend with the local soil so they won't be suspicious of the change to their environment (not my idea btw). Another challenge is once ya have a good print, if you choose to cast it, use a fixitive on the sandy soil and a splash casting technique so the print doesn't change during the pour process. I wanna see pics of your success!

Maybe make up a mixture of say 60:40 sand/localized dirt? So it blends in well, yet still looks "natural". And those cheap portable dvd players usually come with inbuilt speakers anyway - even better idea
