Another funky gadget for the hominid hunter.

Get ready for it.. its a phone!

Yes, I know what you're thinking - "another phone". But my esteemed friends, this isn't any old phone. This is probably one of the best phones I've seen around.. and in my opinion beats the iPhone hands down (and is way cheaper). It's called the LG Optimus GT540. I know it sounds like a sports car, but this phone does so much i'm surprised it doesn't do the washing up.

Now, the reason why i'm going on about this phone is for a few reasons. The phone's software is Android (a Google-based phone operating system) - so all the essential Google apps come included (YouTube, Maps, Gmail). Has 4mb internal memory & can be expanded to 32gb via a MicroSD card. Another good reason to have this is because it has A-GPS (like normal GPS but bounces off a server for better positioning) and WiFi. So basically, if you're out on an outing, and someone has a laptop with WiFi, just tell your phone to use that WiFi signal record whatever videos you need to out in the field & upload there and then to YouTube. The WiFi signal has a range of, well - between said laptop & phone, 32m - if there's phone towers nearby it can extend to a few km's. Another awesome feature that comes with this phone is called Google Goggles (its like normal Google search, but visual instead). Say you're in.. somewhere in/around the Glasshouse Mountains but you don't know exactly where you are. Use Google Goggles to take a "picture" of the GH Mountains, then when the search is complete, it'll come up on Google Maps, combine that with the A-GPS - and you know exactly where you are, give or take a few meters. So, in closing:
  • You can't get lost with this phone.
  • If you see something & take a photo it can be emailed/on the internet within minutes
  • Any videos you take of vocalisations/visual evidence? On YouTube in minutes.
  • Just as good as any GPS receiver out there.
  • Like photos/videos - the voice recorder will produce the same results.
  • Many more options but i'll upload a video of what it can do (which is a lot more, night vision, etc)
  • Oh, it makes phone calls too.

Easy: $279 outright from AllPhones. Getting it today, hence the delayed video of how awesome it is. :D

Okay, update on that phone. I managed to locate myself via GPS and.. well, tracked myself around a shopping center. it was pretty much accurate to within a meter.

i'm yet to fully test the video to youtube uploading yet, but will do when the rain eases up a bit. another nifty thing i found that i didn't know about - it has vocal search. so say you hear a weird noise in the bush close by and you have this phone - quickly hit the voice search - and it'll go to google and find the closest match to that sound. so, once again, when the rain eases up - i'll take it out and see if i can find any LHM around and well - see what google has to say :D

Outstanding how much they are squeezing into those handsets these days !! My problem seems to be the poor connection hassles in some areas I go walking (like out the front of the house.... siiigh)

I'm waiting for a full report and some video from the phone too. Not that I'll get one soon, I'm still trying to figure out the apps from that place in California that won't allow java..... heheheheheh.

As an aside..... there is a new-ish message system out called ping........ you can send text, video, stills, audio over wifi or internet connection from the files on your phone. It's rather cool and works, well..... internet wide. I am being pulled biting, scratching and wailing into more technology!! (eek)

Nice find Deadpool I got a blackberry bold for the GPS,WIFI and other features but since I refused to pay extra for a blackberry account I am unable to use any of its features (eek) so once you are able to tell us that the LG is worth it I may have to reinvest my money

Never rely on a GPS on a mobile phone, it can suck battery power and often in bushland areas you can't get phone coverage rendering your phone GPS useless.

You could however download a standalone piece of GPS software for Android which doesn't require 3G/NextG services. Sygic was one I have used on my HTC Desire for a while, it's good... cost around $70 (do not ever buy the pirated one that goes for $35 on eBay)

If you want a GPS best off going for a Garmin eTrex or similar for the bush, wouldn't EVER rely on a phone GPS any day.

Dash;

I hear ya on this one, if it stays as an opt in that would be great.... doubtful though. Geoplacing is not a new concept, I've had it hit me in the past along with the usual viagra and the departed nigerian uncle scams.... just not for a cup of coffee....lol

I knew I should have kept my clay tablets and stylus!!! (lol)

Does this mean that I should upgrade my Commodore 64 , damn and I have only just changed from the outdated orange screen to the more modern green , and whats all this about GPS isn't that a model / type of kawasaki road bike .

Ya should see my new in car mobile phone this one dosn't require me to have an areial mounted to the rear window its so compact , only about the size of a Grozby's shoe box and it even come with its own shoulder strap , excellant coverage of approx 1km from the nearest tower .

Now where did I leave that Duran Duran 8 track oooo ooooo ???????? ..

We have come a long way in such a short time I am sure that there are posters reading this who think that a Commodore is an Holden car with that new fangled internet capability thingy . (kill)
