Aeroplane Lights

Hey guys,
I just want you guys to confirm if what I saw the other day were aeroplane lights. This was at around about 6:00 it was getting dark though you could still see where you were driving without the lights on. So I was driving along when I saw these lights in the sky. It looked like I was viewing an aeroplane from behind. It was quiet some distance away from me. There were about 5 – 6 or so lights. They were white lights and they were flashing from one end to the other repetitively. If thinking it is a plane then it looked like the lights were flashing from wing span to wing span through body of plane. I was driving much slower then required and holding up cars so I decided to pull off to an intersecting street. I was in about 10m parked to the side and looked up and couldn’t see anything because the trees were blocking half my view. So I drove back out on to the main road again and looked up and didn’t see anything, it was gone. I searched the sky but couldn’t see anything. To my understanding aeroplanes have a red light that flashes every few seconds which I didn’t see. Can someone help me thanks.

Hey Yet2b ,
All I can tell you is that our local plane , a saab 25 seater has 2 landing light's , 2 navigation light's on each wing , one red and the other green or blue and one strobe which I think is on the tail . The strobe is the only one that flashes but if close to the airport , the landing light's flash alternatively . Having said that , I"m pretty sure that different planes have different variation's of light's to distinguish each other at night . Was this near an airport ?

Hey Yet2B ,
Just had a look around and there are several aiport's in the region , Brisbane Stanthorpe Toowoomba and Dalby
But they look like they're a fair way away from you . Was it high in the sky ? Is the airforce base near you , or is that at Toowoomba ? Sound's interesting what ever it was .
