Site Down

Unread post by Dean Harrison »

Yowiehunters and 4WD Australia nearly crashed our Server while we were uploading new reports and working on our sites today, as a result, were closed down.

Not clear how or why. Trying to rectify the issue.

Noticed the site is back up and running with a few added new reports.

I also noticed that someone has gone through all the sighting reports and cleaned them up so they are now in reference, towns and sighting year, awesome work.

Makes looking for them now much easier.

Big thumbs up to the person who did it.

We only just began full flight with uploads, then we were suddenly stopped.

Mambo was causing the issues for the Server. There are no upgrades for it any longer, which means we now have to change the entire software platform in the back end.

Big task and expensive. This has put an end to uploads for now.

The problem is that whenever we save a file, it saves the entire site and thousands of files at a the one time. I did 200 minor site changes. Slowed the entire Network.

They agreed to allow AYR back Online providing we made no more changes until we replace our operating system.

Damn, that fundraising idea is starting to sound like it should be a priority, Dean.
Personally, I'd be happy to contribute as a donating member, since I seem to spend so much of my time on here, and I value the efforts of all those who have created and maintain this site for not just us, but the rest of the world. Lots of forums I'm on have a donation option, and users can have a slightly larger avatar or signature or whatever if they donate, just a thought.

Thank you Sharon.

We deliberately steer away from fundraising or advertising, as that only provides one more angle for the haters. "We're doing this for the money"...... Which we've heard before, despite never earning a cent.

Fair point Dean;

I will keep buying my system 8 ticket every Saturday in the hope of a massive win one day. Would love to fund an exploration with all the gear one day (including choppers!) to find our hair friend.

DAMN THE HATERS I SAY . $ 50.00 bucks a year and a tee shirt thrown in . The AYR team go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to providing this forum it (the site) is quickly becoming invauable as a source of plausible research material even to the point where some of the posters are their own worst critics , re evaluating what it is that they have actually witnessed and stripping away all of the B.S. before it is taken as gossipel .

Keep up the excellant work Dean & team I for one would be more than happy to part with a few dollars every year if it was for the purpose of maintaing this site and funding expeditions which can become quite expensive at times .

Thanks for the support Al - a hug will do just fine.

Re-doing the entire site is something we have had to do a few times before. Large task and I hope we don't lose too much this time around. I was sifting through some of my old files and found backups from the 90's onwards including lost reports, contact details of many of our Witnesses and personal emails from fellow researchers from over the years, pictures and a cornucopia of valuble information that I once thought was lost.

Also 30 floppy disks of backups containing who knows what, as floppy disk drives have vanished along with cassette and vinyl record players.

In the revamp, we will delete most of the folders under the Cryptozoology banner as Dion suggested. Flying Creatures, Water Creatures, UFO/Aliens, Ghosts, Extinction, Rare Fauna and Vietnam etc

The Yowie files will be expanded with many more files.

We will be down for a brief stage over Christmas (unless our new providers have a Temp resolution for this Mambo issue), while we reformat the AYR Website. Different platform, new faster Server, better security, will still look the same, however with far more content and reports.

Large reshuffle that we have been planning over the past Months that has arrived sooner rather than later.

1) Switch to Joomla - its a lot easier to use than Mambo, and i'm sure everything is transferable.
2) I have $75 worth of free Google AdWords credit. Which means you can put $75 worth of AYR ads on google's search pages. If you want it, its yours. Advantages of this? Each click on the AdWord link gives you about 1 cent? I know that doesn't sound like much, but 100 clicks, thats $1. Again, its not much, but hey - free advertising!
..people don't tend to notice him standing there in the last frames..
