Hey, count me in once you're done!

At the moment I'm reading a book about this guy in the early 60's who went to live with the Eskimo. He describes them as very primitive, not having changed their ways much in thousands of years, and the way they think is interesting. For example, they do not understand the concept of gifts. Wondering if those sorts of things that we wouldn't even think of play a role in understanding our hairy friends.

Hi there mad_elaine

I'll send on the sasquatch book to you when I've finished reading it. Just PM me with an address to send it to.

What you said about the eskimos made me think of the book Clan of the Cave Bear. Have you read it? I've only just started it, but it made me wonder if yowie society - if it can be termed that - is relatively sophisticated (like the neanderthals in the story) in terms of language, insight and self-awareness. I'd love to know if their alleged intelligence makes them more like a "people" and less like an "animal", or are they more similar to other animals purported to be very intelligent, such as dolphins, gorillas and chimpanzees. Or maybe they are they somewhere in between and like nothing we know...

The book also mentions that parts of the neanderthals' brains evolved in different ways due to their survival needs, so that they have access to parts of their brains that in humans did not develop so fully, such as the ability to connect with group consciousness and collective memory, and communicate telepathically. Their different head shape reflects parts of the brain which grew larger or were underdeveloped compared to homo sapiens. Could the hairy men reported all over the world be something like this?

Food for thought...

Cheers,

Jezebel

Yes, Clan of the Cave Bear was a very interesting series to read and re-sparked my interest in primitive cultures. I would not be surprised if many of the concepts in it are close to if not absolutely true. Including the recent revelations science has given us about inter-breeding between "humans" and neanderthal. (There is much evidence of their offspring living near me - (lol) ) This whole area of knowledge which we have little understanding of fascinates me.
No problem Selk - I devour books, so once I have it, it won't take me long to pass it on.
