The marsupial Lion you speak of looks half cat and half fox.

I'd say it looks more fox than anything, the snout looks short on the ML pic thats why I said half cat.

But it may just be a trick of light which would make it fox.

Thanks for sharing great pics non the less.

To me it looked very much like a fox, size wise and everything though the snout looks cat like. When I looked closer I wondered could the snout be hidden by some of the long grass?

Still it's great to see people at least out there trying to get shots, rather then sitting on their backsides whinging about lack of proof.

Nice shot Mrx !! (cool)
Its eyes dont look the same as the fox's . From the eyes froward , it looks like an ugly cat but has a protruding snout and receding chin . From the ears up it looks like a fox . But the body looks like it has a different gate or stance . Thats a weired 1 mate .

Nice catch !! You'd better be careful out there Mrx ! .

Cheer's Rusty2............. :)

Go to agree, it's a fox. Can't quite see the end of it's snout though.

Hi tks
I all so have hunted all my life and yes fox do come in a lot of colours like red , yellow ,sliver , black, white around this area. And white, yellow and sliver pay good money.

I sent the pic to one of the best zooligest today and he said:-It looks like a cat to me. The dark, lower part is probably not of the animal

So it sound like it a wird cat.I wish it was a marsupial lion. One day I will get something.

It really looks like a fox bent over to me which would give the body a different definition to one standing up.

My main case against it being a marsupial lion was the size to have survived they would have obviously changed in some ways but I still believe they would be more of a big cat size. After all honestly how many black panthers could be running around ? I think a lot of cases where just footprints or victim carcasses have been found are more likely to be from the newer version of the marsupial lion.

Just a young fox, they are black underneath when they are young

Just been suffing the net and found a bit on Thylacoleo. And what thay say about the head if one was a live today.

Thylacoleo carnifex had a wide, heavy, short-snouted skull with a bony bar (postorbital bar), as in primates, behind the orbits. It has the longest shearing tooth of the thylacoleonids as well as large, serrated, canine-like upper incisors and horizontally oriented lower incisors (replacements for the canine teeth of other carnivorous mammals). Thylacoleo also had an enlarged thumb claw encased in a sheath (as in cats) that may have been used to disembowel its prey.

Definitely fox. Just an unusual angle with some grass obscuring the snout.

Or a sick frog!

A FROG once made proclamation to all the beasts that he was a learned physician, and able to heal all diseases. A Fox asked him: “How can you pretend to prescribe for others, when you are unable to heal your own lame gait and wrinkled skin?” (jest)

Strange that the picture is taken in exactly the same place by the background features. Scam.

Hi yowie Mrx,

I took these pictures recently as I had found some great tracks and took pictures with measurements and sent them to a scientist to look at a few years back. His answer came back marsupial lion, but I guess after all this time if some had survived they would obviously have changed a bit.

So when we went to the museum the other day and found what an original one looked like of course I couldn't resist the shots.

I am personally sitting on the fence with Nikita's pictures - it might be an okapi, a guanoco, or a cryptosporidium (I had to include a "crypto" option for this forum! ;) ).

If that is not a FOX !!! I will stand (to rude for this forum) . So definitely a FOX !!!

Not succsessful on this occasion but with the application of the diligence that you have portrayed in your recent research , you should be placed on the short list as one of those who will eventually get that elusive money shot . Keep em coming YowieMRX .

I'm actually wondering if it's a fox with a birth defect i.e., short muzzle? The ears, pelt, legs, stance look foxy to me, just the muzzle looks too short, not obscured by grass.

Just my .02 anyway

It may be a wee bit too late toreply, but it is definitely a fox.

As for the museum exhibits, well, there are good taxidermists and bad taxidermists, take a look at the following man-eating lions of Tsavo which were stuffed for an American museum. These lions in life were over-large for lions when alive, but the taxidermist managed to make them look like tame house cats.

Question is, did they get the build right for the marsupial Lion in the museum shots?
