Hi all, i've been reading this site for about a year now. The AYR team and all the contributers do a great job and i've very much enjoyed coming here, i thought it's about time i got involved myself.
At the moment i live in the dandenong ranges in Victoria, from what i know there isn't any yowie activity around here (has anyone heard otherwise???)
Anyway, the reason for this post is in about 3 weeks im going to be moving to the nsw/qld border, i'm definetly excited to be living a bit closer to yowie country.
I'm planning on travelling up the newell highway to get there and can't pass up the opportunity to hangout in the pilliga scrub for a few days on the way.
i'll be travelling alone. MY QUESTION IS THIS: Is it safe to camp in the pilliga scrub on your own??? i'll be sleeping in my swag, no tent.
I would be VERY VERY grateful if people on this forum shared there own experiences of the pilliga. What have you seen or heard up there? I'm mainly talking about yowies, but would be interested to know if people have experienced ghosts, ufo's, etc also.

Mate Pilliga is ruff country in some parts. I personally wouldnt go out alone especially if you dont know the area. Its good hunting. gL

I personally agree with bow hunter here I wouldn’t go there by myself let alone camp there overnight by myself, a lot off weird stuff happens there, Yowies, UFOs even the odd ghost story.

But all in all I’d be worried about the Yowies most of all they tend to be quite fearless of humans in those parts.

I am actually going to the Pilliga scrub next month for the course I’m doing we will be spotlighting looking for any animals, the people I’m going with don’t have any idea on Yowies so it will be my little secret. There will be about 15 of us so I dare say no Yowie will come close enough to be known.

But going there by oneself is not a good idea, just my personal opinion.

Just googled pilliga came up with a few good articles this web page came up www.locallegends.com.au worth a good look got a good segment on piliga what will spook ya! plus strange beasts and ghost stories

thanks bow, dion and mrx! im planning on camping not far from the highway and not walking too far from my car and campsite so there's no way i can get lost.
my girlfriend who has already moved to the nsw/qld border refuses to go there with me, so either way my only option really is to go alone.
i am scared to do it, but i think my curiousity will get the better of me and i feel like it's something i need to experience, and a opporunity i may not get again.

Hi AJ, it would pay to listen to the guys on this one, that area has quite a reputation for the hairy men being extra grumpy.
I would love to check out the area, but there is no way in hell I would go alone.
Hey Dion, if you and your friends do happen to have an encounter, be sure to act surprised! LOL

So ive read quite a few stories online about the pilliga, most of them happening many years ago. have people on this forum explored the area in recent years? if so i'd love to hear your stories....

Hi bud I grew up in coona. I spent LOTS of time in the scub as a kid by day and night. Had a couple of strange happenings but nothing too outrageous. I think if you go there expecting yowies you will end up scared of every sound, showdow movement you see. I think the main worry in the pilliga are some of the feral people that live in there!

I had my experience in the Pilliga during operations in 99', when we were confronted by one that was "telling us off", or so it seemed at 4am. A rather grumpy individual that wasn’t short of a word. He had been with us for a couple of hours prior, and we had dismissed it as a Kangaroo initially. It was only when we were walking back towards the car that is seemed apparent that someone was talking.

When I walked towards the voice, it turned out he was a lot closer than I thought, in fact he was standing just on the other side of the track to me when he began yelling.

Because it was so long ago, all I remember in relation to the area was that it was along a sandy road, perhaps a fire trial 10km's (or there abouts) North of Coonabarabran on the Western side of the Newel.

A report came in today that was interesting, possible from someone here.

"Before I tell my story I wish to inform you that I myself am quite a sceptic when it comes to most forms of paranormal activities, Ufos and crypto zoology. I do however find it interesting. I spent the first 18 years of my life in Coonabarabran and after googling the town the other day there were a few mentions of yowies. I myself had a great childhood/ adolescence getting up to all the mischief country boys do, which involved lots of time in the Pilliga riding bikes and more so for myself, shooting. I've spent thousands of hours in the bush at day and at night. The only unexplained event I witnessed is as follows.

It was a winter night at my old man’s property 15 km north of Coona in 2001. Dad myself and my younger brother were out spotlighting, which we did almost every fri/ sat night in the cooler months. The 800acres we shoot on is surrounded by the Pilliga on three sides. Dad was driving, my brother and I were on the back of the ute with the gun an spotlight. We had driven through about one quarter of the property when the spotlight picked up a set of eyes in the scrub on the other side of the boundary. Under the light the eyes looked like those of a fox, bright orange, however they were above the fence, so they appeared to be 5 or 6 feet off the ground. No worries possums eyes look similar. I'll never forget what happened next though. The eyes remained fixed on us, stayed at the same height off the ground and ran off down the fence line for about 200m. It was too far away to make out any shape of the animal at all, but I have never seen anything else like it. I usually reserve this story for trusted mates after a few beers but I thought I would share it with you guys

A.J. If you search through the Files here. http://www.yowiehunters.com/index.php?o ... Itemid=134 you will find quite a bit on Yowies around Emerald and Macclesfield areas. From Monbulk you can get all the way to East Gippsland without leaving tree cover, and a lot of stories still pop up. Noojee is not that far if your 9 or 10 ft tall and could cover a lot of country.

I know this is an old post but did you end up going there and camping alone OP?
