One of my daughters is a radiographer and I read some of her books while she was studying. What surprised me then, and still today, is the relatively high percentage of human children born with physical anomalies of many odd varieties. The general population tends not to hear of these, or be in fact interested, no doubt partly because they make for uncomfortable viewing. From what I can recall, anomalies that effect the head are unviable. This one eyed mutant shark seems to be nothing unusual in that context, as is the discovery of two headed fish fingerlings found in northern NSW recently. No machine is perfect, especially self replicating living organisms. As I understand it, most creatures tend to lose the tail end of their chromosomes as the organism ages which explains the degradation of cells as they replicate over time. There is a recent article I saw that mentions an enzyme which appears to be able to stop and reverse the process.
