Ive read of sightings near Roxby Downs, Willunga (Id like to know more about this one as I live not far away), Tailem Bend (several sightings of I think a 9 footer), Adelaie Hills, and Tintinara.
Does anyone else know of any other sightings/encounters in South Australia?
Have any members had an encounter in S.A.?

I live in Adelaide but I dont know too much about activity here... I thought maybe the climate was a bit dry for them yet there has been one all the way up in Roxby Downs.
I wonder if they are up in the hills or the flinders ranges.

yep 2. 1966 out on didicoolum station damn thing was throwing native pine cones at me. 1967 evening jumping up and down on front verandah of house on moonmera station both in keith area chased the second one. it ended up chasing me out of the scrub long story. again 1977 the shacks below pt agusta that border the army exercise area it tried to kick the door down then tore up the patch of scrub nearby. other shack stayers came out to witness the bloody great noise. ken (newbie)

Hi Ken
Could you please tell us why you think it may have chased you out of the scrub? Was it roaring at you as it was chasing you or quiet?

all three events are somewhat llong and easier to convey verbally. but. the chase event ill give a go. last friday night of sept school holidays. had a mate stay for holidays. his parents and mine sitting in lounge room talking. my little sister and mates little brother at kitchen table playing manopoly. mate in bedroom radio on packing his gear for return to adelaide next morning. i came out of the head and could hear this banging sound. stopped at lounge/open kitchen area,no one paying any attention. turned around went out end door under carport. firstly mums little aussie terrier was nowhere to be seen his kennel was by the door. u nearly always tripped over his joyful greeting of you. crossed the yard to gate prob 12 feet the two sheep dogs were cowered in side their 44gal kennels most strange. stopped turned around still could here this banging/thumping sound. went back inside. yep louder inside. parents and little ones not up to speed on situ yet. went down hallway figured must have been mate making noise in bedroom. yeah right. found him frozen to the spot like a lump of rock (city kid) asked him what the f*** u doing. at my comment he snapped out of his freeze and said no its not me its outside the window on front verandah. s#@t says i. dived back into lounge stopped listened yep still going on. listen everyone whats that. damn. they were too busy listening to the old mans yarn to tune into anything else. a more direct approach was required, listened again, yep still going on, sounded like someone jumping up and down on front wooden verandah. i yelled shutup everyone listen. old man stopped talking four sets adult eyes bored holes in me. i replied no listen can u hear it can u feel it. hear what the old man said. mum said dont tell u father to shutup. i replied shutup and listen. they did. thump thump thump three times then a growl and no more. did u hear that. mates dad said yes my dad said its the dog i replied dogs gone. i then dived out the front door. still no dog in sight wondered where the terrier was. looked across the front yard and saw a dark shadow finish crossing the dirt track and enter the bush path at left hand end of house that went at a 45 degree angle down the hill crossing downward left to right.( not human) through the scrub.( need more friggin space. to write.)

ok to continue. I ran across front lawn tried to open front gate pipe frame wire mesh about 3 and a half feet high and about 30 inches wide. it was jammed shut i vilted the fence and raced across the dirt track that went past front of house and stopped at the entrence to the track. now this track was narrow with many low over hanging branches that one needed to either duck under or push out of u way thus ensuring that whom ever was following u copped it in the face as they swung back just like in the abbott and costello movies. so i stopped and listened yep lots of crashing of branches (no breeze that evening) so i gave chase. ran a bit stopped and listened. yep could still hear the noise moving down track. had to slow down stop listen move forward stop listen then noise stopped. great no torch not much light. stood and listened. then heard a growl like nothing i had ever heard before. thought s***t its coming back. so i did what all brave people do when confronted with such an imponderable situation i started to retrace my steps in lighting fashion. stopped twice to listen. yep still coming. exited the bush path bolted across the tracked and field evented the fence. (whick i could never do at school). stopped turned and waited. nothing showed but the trees just inside the scrub were doing a frigging tango. it eventually stopped. by this time the mate had come out onto the front verandah. great i said just in time to be too bloody late. he asked what the hell was it. my reply. i dont know mate i just dont know. it was then that the terrier crawled out from under the house trembling. he had wet himself. he bolted inside. never done any of that before. so washed him and he slept in laundry. no one ever spoke of the event again and we left for adelaide early next morning school started on the monday. so was unable to conduct a spoor check of area . spoor=tracks

re weapons testing. a lot has been carried out at proof range back at proof range port wakefield. army since the 1930s i think and before that the navy, but as i said nothing would surprise . woomera, a good spot for testing, still a lot of that area is taboo for civvies. u can sometimes here the arty from the proof range back as far as two wells and gawler. i would assume wind direction to be the factor. word is the el alemein area is to double insize and expand over the public highway to whyalla. hmm dont like the fact that the feds will have control of transit along a public highway. but they gotta test their oh so good yank tanks somewhere dry during the northern wet season cause they are unable to traverse a water obstical to the same depth that a hummer can and it uses more fuel to go 60k less than a leopard maybe they need highway control for servo access (bp)

Not a visual encounter but..
September 2012 Belair National Park:
I was visiting a lady in Adelaide suburbs. We had a big argument and so i left and took the train up the national park as it had been on my itinery. I stayed at the campsite/caravan park with my tent for 2 days i think before returning to Adelaide. I had a walk around the park.. there were a few people there but not many. I was taking photographs of the general nature and trees. At one point i left the path to have a closer look at a large termite mound. At that time there seemed to be no-one else about. I suddenly had the distinct feeling i was being watched but i had a gaze around and couldn't see anyone. Back then i had actually already briefly read about the yowie but quickly dismissed that idea as i thought they were only in the Blue Mountains area. Where i was located next to the termite mound it was in a kind of dip and there was high ground and ledges that surrounded my area. I took some photos and sat down to meditate a bit and absorb the nature around me. After 10 mins or so i then continued on my wander. I later saw a large wallaby. Perhaps that had been disturbed i don't know. I've recently reviewed the pics i took after i had read on YH main website there a few encounters in SA. There is one sighting at Sixth Creek which looks to be 18-25km away.
I'll try and post the pics i took.

I must confess to the hairs on the back of my neck standing up a bit when Tintinara was mentioned in the post.
One of my brothers has lived down that way for 30 odd years,so it might be interesting to catch up with him,and suss out if he or his mates have heard of or come across any stories or whatever over the years.
I'll post back at a later date after I've "grilled him"

Well,I've spoken to my brother over the phone, and he had a few bits and pieces, but nothing substantial I guess.
He's heard a few noises over the years he couldn't explain, like twigs or stones falling onto his tin roof, then rolling / sliding down the corrugations late at night.Four or five noises in a 15 or 20 min period, then nothing...seeing as he hasn't got any trees around his place,he's at a loss.......possums or rats perhaps?
This has happened perhaps half a dozen times in his time at the house, which is about 30 years.
The only other thing he said that was odd was his rubbish bin got absolutely "beaten up" one time in his back yard........this was about 20 years ago....he had the old school type round, steel bin with the lid that sits on top.
He got home from work, and went in to cook his dinner.........prepared his meal and was taking some rubbish from his kitchen bin outside to the steel bin, when he found it mangled........the lid still intact,no rubbish strewn around the place or anything like that.........strange.....just put it down to kids.
His place has a a normal 5 foot high corrugated iron fence all the way around, with no gate access from the front to the rear yard;the only access is through the roller door either end of the enclosed garage which is under the main roof of the house.
The house is situated on a dirt road, approx 400m from the main road, with only another 4 or so houses along that length, and has no immediate neighbours, the closest being about 200m away.
The property backs on to paddocks / pastoral / grazing lands for as far as you can see.
Could the hairy fella's be held accountable for this?

Some pics from my experience at Belair National Park in the Adelaide Hills - September 2012. I had left the trail to check out a termite mound. I had the distinct feeling i was being watched after i got to the mound. I had already read about the yowie but quickly dismissed it as i thought they only existed in the eastern states. Much later i read on this website of a purported encounter approximately 25km away from Belair. I cannot see anything in the shots but if anyone does then please let us know!

Thanks.. No horses there. I hadn't heard of any or brumbies etc. There were koalas, a kangaroo skipping away down a path later and a handful of humans, mostly near the park entrance. Later a park volunteer appeared and came up to me for a chitchat, there's a possibility he was following me around i dunno.

I remember some stories of people seeing stuff down at the Aldinga Scrub. Unfortunately I don’t have much details.
I like hiking personally. Have been to most places close like Cleland, Belair, Lofty etc. The only place I got a bad feeling, like I was being watched, was Parra Wirra. I got a bit panicked there because I was pretty far in. Was only a certain area. Don’t know about any sightings that way?

Cheers Dion,
Long time lurker - somewhat like a certain hairy creature. Very interested in this stuff, but have found myself in the two states that don’t seem to have much activity, comparatively (Tasmania and now SA)

Hi all,
I´ve been lurking for a while and I have been reluctant to post this for a few reasons(mainly because it is not a sighting as such) but here I am anyway, it´s been 20 plus years now and one of these episodes has been eating at me the whole time.
So a bit of context, I grew up in Adelaide and later moved to the Barossa and then Murray Bridge and with my Dad we used to go away camping or fishing at least once a month at various places until I was old enough to head out on my own. We were members of a fishing club too and often we camped with other members and there could be quite a few people around come Saturday nights.
The first, for lack of a better term, encounter was on one of these trips where there was about 20 of us camping at a place called Punyelroo. I think it was around the summer of 94 or 95, I was a young teenager so dates were never important enough to remember at that time. Anyway we were camped up over by the river and behind us there is a large backwater and we had put a couple of yabby nets in the backwater. Come night at some point us kids, there were 3 of us me the oldest around 14-15 and two brothers from another family said we wanted to go check the nets. An obligatory adult came with us just in case so four of us headed maybe a couple hundred of meters to check the nets. Myself and one of the other kids were upfront a little ahead of the other two and just as we were about to get to the reeds where the nets were we heard a heavy stomp followed by a grunt and the whatever it was took off and crashed through the reeds and ran, waded, jumped who knows what straight across the backwater until we heard it crash through the bush again on the opposite side. I never saw it and by the time I could shine my torch on it all that we could see was the path that it had crashed through the reeds still freshly moving. Well the two of us up front freaked and started heading to the guys behind us, I was like what was that and the other kid with me said it was a monster. He was adament about it. I couldn´t say but what ever it was was big and I´d say no more than 10 meters away when we startled it. The adult who came with us when they caught up said it must of been a roo to which my mate flat out said no it wasn´t. At this point we all stopped and continued to listen to it cross the backwater and when it hit the other side and carried on looking for the nets. The roo explanation was good enough for me at the time, after all a big red is an impressive animal and I gave it little thought until a few years ago. It´s only later thinking back I wonder what if it wasn´t but I do know the easiest and most obvious answer is it was a roo.
It is this second encounter that I could never really say with confidence what it was and that annoys me. It was on Adelaide Cup longweekend, pretty sure it was 2000 maybe 99 and the location is roughly halfway between Swan Reach and Blanchetown on the Murray. It is private property so don´t really want to name it publicly but people familliar with the region may be able to guess as it was open to the public for a small fee. Because it was a longweekend the plan was to go up Saturday morning and come back on Monday, this time a different friend picked me up and we arrived at the campsite about lunch time. The owners told us nobody else was there and we drove in and pretty much went to the end of the track and set up camp in a nice, flat sandy area. Definitely did not see anyone else and nobody came during the day or night. We set up our tents pretty close together then set up our fishing gear down on the sandbank and made our fire area about halfway between the river and tents. Fishing was c**p but other than that all it was a normal campout. As night came we cooked dinner over the fire, sausages in bread, bacon sandwiches and roast spud type of thing and then sat about listening to triple J and cassettes. Eventually my friend said he was off to bed, for me it seemed early but it was probably 11:30-Midnightish but I figured I´d turn in too. I took the radio in my tent and said I´ll turn it off after a smoke and settle in for the night. Probably 5 minutes later I turn it off and all is quiet. At that point the only thing we could hear is each other settling in, zips on sleeping bags been done up, sound of canvas as you move type of thing and after a bit of this we obviously settled and it was very quiet.
Now I´m not sure on how much time had passed in silence, probably no more than 5 minutes but that is when I heard footsteps approach the tents from where the campfire was and they continued to walk straight between our two tents and then continue around my mates tent and head into the trees. There was even a man size shadow that darkend the tent as it went past, not a perfect silhouette though, at least for me. I figured it was my mate going to relieve himself but thought it odd as I would of heard him get unzipping the tent and fly. And the footsteps continued, off down pass the end of the track. I thought where is he going? That is when I heard him shift in his tent, I thought ok and said "Was that you?" He replied "I thought it was you" We had a brief exchange and as we could still hear whoever it was settled on it was neither of us. We didn´t speak again until the morning and even though I wanted to there was no way I was heading out to go to the toilet. Eventually I went to sleep, can´t speak for my mate but given how freaked out he was in the morning I´d say he didn´t have a great night. No idea if he heard other things during the night, he didn´t say if he did or not.
I woke when the sun was up and first thing I did was check the fishing gear, figured maybe it had been stolen but all was fine, nothing missing in the esky either. So ok, it wasn´t a thief at least. We sat down and tried to rationalise it, maybe it was a hiker, maybe someone lives down that way, maybe the shacks weren´t empty. Then we looked for tracks, either shoe prints or animal tracks but even all our shoe prints from setting up the tents were just indentations in the sand so nothing was really discernable. Even mentioned possible Aboriginal spirits. Next thing I know he is breaking camp and packing up, well he was my ride so I had to do the same. I was fine with staying but it was clear he was shaken by the whole thing. We were home before lunch on Sunday.
Yowies were never on our radar in SA and it was only recently I even considered it because as strange as it sounds I´m more comfortable with that idea. Nothing about it makes sense if it was a person but it wasn´t an animal we know and sounded exactly like a person walking through camp and then walking through the bush. Even looking the area over now on maps it raises more questions about why it could of been a person and where even they could of been heading as there is nothing that way and it eventually leads to cliffs on the waters edge.
To this day I guess I´ll never know what or who it was, can´t say it was a hairy either. I just don´t know with this one, the first I can live with the roo explanation but this one will probably bug me forever.
So I have no idea if any of this is useful and I feel a bit silly reading it back to myself but like I say here I am. These days I live in Spain with my family so have not been back there since, I´d be ok with it if I´m honest but definitely more aware. Don´t think the other guy could be dragged back though.

Hi there HaSolar
Welcome to the forums
The person walking through camp would have shaken most people up thanks for taking the time to write up a explanatory possible encounter.
You may well have had a close encounter with the hairy kind.
Regards
