On a bushwalk today startled something ahead of me on the narrow track about 30m away.
In the 1.5 seconds I got looking at it, it was:
Almost jet black
Had a long narrow tail
Was around 450mm high roughly (when moving)
I remember seeing it's anus which was a lighter colour.
Didn't get much of a look at it's head/ shoulders. ( as it was running directly away )
It took off very quickly, was down on all fours and striding with it's whole body low to the ground.
I have seen plenty of very dark wallabies in the bush but am 100% sure this was not one.
I got the impression it wasn't very large guessing the weight at less than 15kg.
Looked for hair/prints/scat. Found where it was scratching around the soil, 2 possible prints ( divets) no hair unfortunately.
Feral cat? Or juvenile black leopard?
Tail was very long and slender - feral cats have this feature?
Thanks

could have been feral cat, I've seen kills friends have brought back about that size , maybe larger.
But you never know, but if it was juvenile black leopard it was probably young so mother could've been close by.
