Poppy in a Pipe

It's no Daisy in a box, but it's an idea that I had.

I'm sick of being let down by US hoaxers, so I had a think about how I might go about it if I ever lost my marbles.

G'day Forest Guy, Someone in the seventies built a large robust box like trap with one door that ran for years. It was unsuccessful. I suspect they are just too smart to enter an enclosed space simply because they have probably never experienced one before. Even manipulation of a natural feature such as a cave to convert it into a trap would be noted no doubt by a Yowie. As this is the controversial page I'll say that it still seems to me a bullet will decide the creatures status. In the Us it would not surprise me if someone has shot one. People used to go looking for the thing and went wow 'its real' when they saw one. It was only time till someone went looking with the intention of shooting one. Here in Australia I imagine if the latest claim proves true there may be a surge in interest about the Yowie and that may lead to a hillbilly redneck in the mountains somewhere knocking one on his first encounter. Pure speculation on my part. So a trap? I'm not a big fan. I'll rely on a plotwatcher where the cage isn't confined. But then again that will never get a biological sample Well thought out plan... maybe it is the way to go mate.

The Trap

FG; First thought is since you posit using an in place structure...... there would have to be some level of Official permission. Most under highway passages I've read about here already recognize them as animal right of way passages (I don't think Skippy got the memo though (jest) )

If all of the above can be overcome, using a weighted gravity drive closer (lots of removable mass with a gate locking device sorta thing to inhibit a lift opening) would be my first thought..... This could be a great winter project just making prototypes !! Hmmmm Hmmmm

Just a random thought... since this is the board for it. What is your plan when the door slams shut? Mr Hairy is not gonna be a happy chappy and there aren't a whole lotta good ways to open a trapdoor without up close and personal interaction....... just sayin!!

Cheers

Thanks for the link No Polys :)

I'm not saying it couldn't be done... the daisy in a box suggested explosives to effect the trap with a pressure plate to activate. My only issue is getting one comfortable enough to enter an enclosed space. Perhaps the theory that an open ended pipe might negate that is correct... literally seeing light at the end of the tunnel... go for it. I am reminded of a feral dog trap where one end is made of glass with a live rabbit caged beyond. The only, seeming' way for the dog in is toward the glass end and hopefully rabbit...then snap.

Hi guys - thanks for the replies. The reason I was thinking about the pipe was twofold, 1, to minimise the weak points (much harder to kick your way out of a buried pipe than the side of a cage), and 2, because in active areas I think they'd probably use them already as a safe, out of sight, road crossing.

If that's the case, then they'd probably give it a wide berth as soon as someone started messing with it, so the baiting program would have to be long term I think.

As to emptying the trap, that's the kicker... Ketamine-laced banannas? Dunno. To be brutal (this is the controversial thread), I'd probably put a bullet in it, but I'd want a few guards with shootguns keeping lookout for the hairy family.

I still think the best way is to dart one.......I have some ideas on how this to occur
we could use the gorilla dose rate as I guide.

Perhaps a sedative laced bait?

trapping such as this is illegal in NSW but I would guess Nation wide

trapping vermin and ferals is allowed to a point where they are disposed of quickly and humanely.

(rats on sticky boards for instance, must be disposed of within 12-24hrs of being caught. (gas them over a car exhaust, or a hammer. Possums in roofs must be provided with atleast 2 days worth of water and food before caught and traps must be checked every 24hrs. The possum must be released within a 100mtr radius where caught)

all traps must be set where no danger to native fauna and human can occur.

Ants
On the topic of Darts. a simple vine trigger with a bow/arrow set behind a bush can be constructed within 10mins and is taught in most survival courses. Also illegal (unless in life/death situation). but wouldn't be too hard to setup a trigger on a leaf blower or a small C02 gas cannister (used for model planes) with a bamboo reed as the barrel.

Poisons are easy to make make. Tranquiliser solutions can be made from bush materials but large quantities would be needed, so a vet supplier would be best bet (good luck convincing them to sell that though).

Avoid sites that allow people to post anonymously, that glorify hoaxers, award hoaxers, attack others evidence and show a lack of real field experience by what they post and you will be let down allot less. I see allot of posts on here from sites that remind me of tabloids, which I avoid completely. A tabloid will not provide many if any facts has been my experience in life. The US is full of these right now. Know the difference.
