HAWKS BAY NZ

Hi All

Its been a while since I have posted, been flat out working on heaps of good stuff. I have also developed a passing interest in the NZ version of BF or at least the reported sighting of which has been non existent for 30-40 years that i can find the last sighting I read was in Waikato in the 70's. Frustrating to say the least, I mean i really cant find much of anything other than some NZ Maori Literature. That was until this week.

I run a football club as well and I was approached by one of my many kiwi players this week who wanted to share the following story. He (the player) and his brother worked the family farm in Hawks Bay for many years during their 20's. He told me that on or new their property there was a very large and wild forest and a very large lake, similar in size to lake Baroon near Maleny in QLD. He told me that over a 6 month period on the property, he and his brother would have to go and shoot a very large number of feral goats, over a the period they shot 600 goats but strangely, they would return a few days later to get the bodies for burning so as not to attract other ferals such as pigs or dogs which he assured me was in very small numbers in the area.

On their return they would find many of the bodies gone and no remains, he found many drag marks to tree and just stop, to the edge of the lake and just stop, these bodies which he said that over the months could be up to 100 where never retrieved, no remains at all. He said he and his brother often walked through the forest hunting and heard what sounded like 'yells' or 'screams' that did not sound human echoing out through the forest canopy day and night. I played him the audio of the howl we got last year and he said it was very close. He said that on numerous times he felt as they where being showed by someone or thing (remembering this is private property but it wouldn't stop other hunters) and other types of weird of unearthly sounds such as high pitched squeals and huffs and puffs.

These encounters with whatever it was certainly had certainly shaken him and has peaked his interest in the Crypto world at the same time. The emotion and anxiety in his voice and face is evident in recalling what I beleive to be factual events. Does anyone at all have any updated information from NZ about possible hairymen there or know of any other resources as it has been very hard to find anything?
Does anyone know enough about NZ wildlife in that region to provide alternatives, other predators?

Interesting story but it is puzzling

Hi Ray,

One big question mark hanging over all of this is how the Hairy Men could possibly get to New Zealand in the first place given how remote it is. New Zealand's only documented native mammals are bats and sea mammals. New Zealand was a part of the super-continent of Gwondwana, but obviously that goes back a very long time before primates are thought to have evolved. Any theories or ideas?

Thats a very good question. NZ has no natural big predators IE: Bears, Wolves etc
However I cannot conceive how it could. However, the Maori lore books talk of a creatures
that was common through out the country such as the "Taniwah'

http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/1966/animals-mythical

I am thinking a pack of wild dogs and pigs myself, however you never know
and can never say never :D

Well this one here caught my eye, I spent my first 21 years of life in Nth Hawkes Bay.. Its a fascinating story, but one of a Yowie/Moehau? Guessing by the size, the lake he is talking about would be Lake Tutira perhaps, would love to get more details.
Tutira itself is surrounded by mostly farm land, with a few patches of native scrub and a Radiata pine plantation, not really what I would consider Moehau country.
If it was anywhere around Lake Waikaremoana, well that would be a different story. This lake situated on the fringe of Te Urewera NP, but much bigger then what this guy describes.
I found a report a while back by some tourists walking the lake track, they apparently seen a family of them at the lake edge..
Im on the fence whether Moehau really exist in NZ, however Im confident a pre Maori civilization did once upon a time exist. There's a lot of spooky stuff goes on in the bush over there, but they just don't have the witness testimonies like here in Aussie.
NZ would have to have more outdoorsmen and farmers per capita then most countries, not to mention the hoards of tourists that make the pilgrimage to mountains every year. Surely there would be more reports...
A Moehau has no shortage of places to hide, but if they are out there, they're very few and far between..

I found this on Rex Gilroy's site..
http://www.australianyowieresearchcentr ... -park.html

"The search for evidence of living relict hominids has taken Heather and I far and wide. In September 2001 we were in New Zealand again in search of the Moehau ‘manbeast’. On a remote forest track in the Urewera National Park, on the east coast of North Island, I uncovered a number of faded tracks in a patch of soil, which led me a few yards away, to discover two that were clearly visible and worth casting.

These left and right foot impressions measured 29.5cm in length by 13cm width across the toes, 10cm width at mid-foot and 7.5cm width across the heel, making the owner about 5ft 6 inches [about 1.68m to 1.83m] in height.

Moehau male and female hominids have been reported seen roaming this vast region, particularly in the Otaunoa Range for generations.

In 1983 a group of seven of these primitive people were seen by two trampers, in the vicinity of Lake Waikaremoana. These beings consisted, said the two men, of three juvenile females, a juvenile male, two 5ft tall adult females and one adult male of about 6ft height.

The hominids were all garbed in animal hides, probably cow, and they were watched from behind foliage 15 metres or so above a gully as they worked their way along the edge of a rocky creek. The sighting lasted several minutes." - Rex Gilroy
