I'm new to this forum, so forgive this casual observation that some established members here seem to be concerned, nay paranoid, about the attraction of Yowies to children. Is this attraction anything more than the fact that the young of all species, including humans, are cute?

A bit weird. I've heard the hairy ones are fascinated by our little ones but no I don't think it's about neoteny more that little ones are considered harmless and thus safer to inspect.

After having read the aboriginal legends and accounts featured on this site, I would be more inclined to think that the fascination that yowies seem to posses with children is probably more oppurtunistic. As negative and horrible as it sounds, in the aboriginal legends and dreaming history, children were often a quick and easy meal for yowies, who would kidnap them when they wandered off, and would even keep them captive for later use . Although even I'll say that these could be stories used to keep children's behaviour in check, with threatening stories of the yowie. I havent heard of any contemporary encounters where children have been harrassed or threatened profusely let alone abducted or killed.
. I agree with Gavin as well in the fact that rather than any sort of neoteny, children would pose much less of a threat than a grown adult, and would be much safer to observe.

I am of aboriginal decent and my father would tell me that when he was younger his nan n rellos would often say dont come home late or goonge or hairy man will get you. A goonge was a bad spirit and hairy man pretty obvious! My father had 2 encounters when he was younger so he said the warnings from the elders where to keep kids in check but also a real deal warning. Dad would always say he would never walk anywhere on his own after dark or any of the other kids for that matter

Just as a big cat would single out a weak , sick or young member of a Heard I would think that Doolighal being wild creatures would carry out the same preference it is the call of the wild , natural selection even , only the strong survive .

Perhaps they find human kids as cute and cuddly as do kittens, puppies etc

I think maybe in days of old when there was a much bigger yowie population they may have taken children, thus there own passed down culture you might say of being so protective of there own offspring. Also I think when it was just indigenous on the continent they were both living of the land making them more territorial of each other back then, all though they may see white man as more dangerous, and there lands diminishing now,but there are no indigenous as a whole competing for natural food sources on the broader scale. As we see from many reports they are attracted to children and crying, but historically this creature seeing what happened to indigenous populations in the early years have maybe thought twice about what they can and cant do concerning white man..This transitional period over the last 200 years of white settlement surely would have had some effect on yowies outlook on humans..Interesting thought is that maybe there young also cry and that any yowie has some type of instinct like us to investigate or help, see link http://www.theguardian.com/science/2012 ... ard-ignore

Even us as humans find it hard to ignore anything small and baby like, we love small animals,kittens,puppies etc
