Is anyone familiar with "Flat Earthers"? - they are a community of people who believe the Earth is in fact flat.
I had no idea there was a modern, and very much alive and kicking, following of the theory until just recently.
I first read comments by one woman the other day on a facebook planetary page. The topic was the moon landing, and at first she just exclaimed that there was never a moon landing. I didn't think much of that as its quite obviously controversial.
However she went on to say that the earth is flat and continued a long stream with claims (although didn't directly answer any legitimate questions). At first I thought she was spamming, but there were a few others supporting her claims.
Anyway, after going to her facebook where all her posts are public, it seems she certainly believes in her claims.. which don't end there.
She speaks of NASA staging everything (and that there is actually no such thing as "space").. even fake the moon in our sky (HOLY BATMAN ROBIN!.. God knows how!), that the recent eclipse is dodgy based on the visual shadow covering the moon from the wrong direction, that there is undiscovered land on this flat earth, and my personal favourite - that the curvature of the earth you can see from some points on earth is the effect made from the vanishing point "where all you can focus on blurs together" (huh??).

Yes I think that is one that I will leave well enough alone for now.

Some of the claims are simply ludicrous and I am always wary of arguments that seemed to be fuelled almost entirely by conjecture, anecdote and conspiracy.

Dont you find it strange that nasa has to use cgi images of the earth, why not just take real photos from your satellite.

I don't mean to be rude but I looked at the link and unfortunately found the largest collection of unsubstantiated tripe I have read in a long time.

There are so many errors, from unsubstantiated claims about aerial photography to misquoting engineers about allowing for earth's curvature.
What I do see is someone who has very shaky understandings (if any) of spherical trigonometry, physics, civil engineering and a number of other disciplines.

It is easy to claim there are faked photographs, experiments that show no earth's curvature, etc. without referencing anything, showing any data whatsoever nor having the slightest concern that your readership might have the resources to investigate independently and prove you wrong. To be honest, scientists generally can't be bothered dealing with this sort of stuff as it is a waste of their time.

I wonder if SR-71 pilots would believe in a flat earth after having the experience of flying at high altitude, viewing the curvature of the earth first hand, launching in darkness and catching up with the sun by flying faster than the earth's rate of rotation. I certainly didn't get the impression that Colonel Jim Irwin (Apollo 15) was lying to me when he described his trip to the moon and how he left a King James Bible on the lander that was left behind. I met him during an Australian tour in the late 80's.

Seriously guys, don't just believe every old thing you read on the web. Check it out with some professionals or get on to some science forums and pose the question. I am sure you will annoy some science nerds more than enough to point you to ACTUAL evidence in the form of studies that refute every single point of the flat earth theory and then some.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents, my own opinion and you are entitled to disagree. Castigate me at will as is your right, but I am not going to waste any more time on this.

Oh and I forgot to mention this.

Yes one could, but to do so, one would have to blatantly ignore the testimony of thousands of eye-witnesses, physical evidence in footprints and hair samples, blood samples, scat, orthodontic impressions from food and the reasoned hypotheses of professionals in relevant fields such as biology, who are out there in the field gathering a little thing called "more evidence".

Of course you could also say, without a reasonable basis, that because a couple of people have been caught hoaxing tracks and bigfoot bodies/photographs that this is proof that the entire phenomenon, spanning numerous countries, hundreds of years and thousands of witnesses, is ALL fake.

I would hope we can be more reasoned in our approach to mysteries so that we can avoid looking like idiots and actually discover something worthwhile.

I read a bit of Eric Dubay’s presentation just to see what the fuss was about.

I could not believe the amount of info he’s collated; I’ve never heard of this conspiracy, I’ll add it to the collection.
When I immerse my fertile imagination into this kind of headachey material, I usually end up with one question that
miraculously comes to me for some reason. I carry that question into the fray and can not rest until it's answered.
It’s not a good way to be really, as it shows a solid bias.

In this case the question is: If the earth is flat, why is there no mention of where it begins and ends in Dubay’s material.
And if it is a continuum, why hasn’t someone continued ?

Yes it’s an interesting past time ‘digging apart reality’. Trouble is, make sure you can put some of it back together again.

So when you ironed out your globe Yb, where were the edges where you'll fall off ? I think Australia will be safe.

Hi Tuckeroo. I had a look at the flat earth thing awhile ago when it was popping up on youtube and quickly moved on as i had no idea what they were talking about and had enough conspiracy theories and other weird things to concern me at the time.

However if i was trying to prove such an absurd theory and truly believed it then the first thing i would do is go the edge or edges of the earth and take some photos and video evidence.

I also think someone would have realised this by now if the earth was flat and had edges!

Going to the edge would be one good way, however antartica just happens to be off limits to us civilians, treaties signed by countries etc

I started investigating flat earth some time ago thinking are they serious, a couple of points they bring up do cast doubt on the globe earth theory that we are all taught since birth, I like many others have started to investigate some of the flat earth claims.

Just another truth seeker, whether its yowies, flat earth, moon landings or 9/11.

But like you say, keep an open mind, but make sure it doesn't all fall out

Yeah mate best to keep an open mind but easy to get paranoid if your bullshit detector is playing up. Its frustrating talking to someone who only believes what they see in the mainstream media and extremists who dont see other peoples views are just as bad. Theres a fine line somewhere in the middle!

You seem rock solid in your beliefs or your statement was a bit rhetorical.
Maybe it would be better just to ask for evidence.

I worked with a fella once who was convinced some of the moon photos and footage by nasa were faked
at night time in the Australian desert. Pine gap involved somewhere also. Apparently his only evidence
was because images and audio were relayed to Australia first via the Parkes observatory.

Other things I’ve read about the van Allen belt etc. seem like good evidence or an idea that is a sticking
point between debaters.

Also there are claims that footage was created by Stanley Kubrick’s film studios in England.
There seems to be a hierarchy of evidence starting with the van Allen belt, faked images and the flapping
stars and stripes. How so many technicians could be involved in such a conspiracy never seems to be a
priority with conspiracy theorists.

If you are so convinced and are prepared to make a statement like that, I would be interested to know
what pieces of evidence sealed your thinking. I respect your opinions and hope you would do likewise.

Posters on this site such as Searcher and TrevorPeters are more qualified than me to comment on this subject
but I sense they wouldn’t go near this with a barge pole. But I will.

My conspiracy theory...

The 'Flat Earth' conspiracy theory is a psy-ops designed to discredit anyone who questions the mainstream. It is designed to make all 'conspiracy theorists' look like retards to the average sheeple looking into such things for the first time.

What about Coriolis Effect, the fact that NASA is not the only source of satellite photography, and where is the the Great Ice Wall of the South Pole that Eric Dubay talks about?

There once was doubt, as good science was mostly driven by religion, Christian fundamentalists were trying hard to prove the literal truth of the bible.

I'd like to believe that the 'modern' flat earth movement is mostly tongue-in-cheek,
or an exercise in supporting an idea that is unsupportable.

Sadly it's not; look into it and you will find the best (or worst) of the internet's religious fundamentalists and conspiracy theorists who believe mainstream science is the devil.
It's quite scary.
