Vapour trails

This morning, high up were 3 cloudy lines going from north to south.
I'm under a flight path for capital city passenger jets and often see them high up leaving a vapour trail.
These vapour trails usually fade out after a few minutes.
This morning, these white lines were straight and fairly sharp for a long distance. Covering a third of the sky
between the horizons, I couldn’t quite see if there was a tiny speck of an aircraft at the end of them.
I thought they were probably a cloud anomaly and I was just imagining things, but I noticed that they
were gradually becoming wider with more blurry edges as they drifted to the east, as if they’d only been
recently created.
It was a very still day today and they lasted well into the morning gradually merging together in bands
and becoming indistinguishable. Do jet aircraft leave these kinds of vapour trails and if they do why do
some fade out after a few minutes and others last a few hours.
