Can anyone give me a few pointers on how to communicate with the hairy one?
Perhaps Tree knocking, howls etc?

Doesnt need to be moved to the Yowie Tech and Tips thread, its on topic.
In regards to your question,
First you have to find one that is willing to show itself, which isnt easy, then there are hypothetical approaches such as what you have described yourself, and i say hypothetical because there is no formula to to trying to find one.
You may try Wood knocks or Howls but then you need to eliminate the possibility of it being another human if you get a reply, which is difficult.
My old man and I once heard a very loud howl coming from the depths of the Blue Mountains once, gut feel told me it wasnt dog or human as it was LOUD long and drawn out, and came from I would say a km away.
Again there is no real formula, being out there is the first step, then its all chance.

Find a good, likely spot and simply talk to them with respect. You are entering their domain so should ask permission. Let them know you mean no harm.
Encounter experiences indicate they are vocal communicators like us. And many US reports mention the use of words bearing strong similarity to First Nations dialects, especially Cherokee for some reason.
Homo Nocturnus is obviously very intelligent, learning to mimic sounds they hear very accurately, so I would not put it past them to quickly learn English words.
Origne people ask 'the ancestors' aloud for permission to enter certain areas. Who is to say the ancestors being asked are not ancestral spirits as whitey understands them, but actual flesh and blood 'ancestors'?
My brother-in-law's old aunties used to refer to the Yowies as 'them old fellas'. Whitey hearing this most likely thought they were referring to elders.
So just talk to them. If they're in the area their curiosity might incite an answer or response of some kind.
As a disclaimer, I have never tried this myself as I have only recently concluded this to be the most likely method of generating an encounter and have never felt myself to be in a 'hotspot', despite spending many hours in likely areas all over the east coast.
