"#OnThisDay 1851 John Green an early farmer/explorer in South East Queensland (around the Maleny area) writes a diary entry for regarding the mythical creature that would go on to be known as the Yowie! Now we don’t mean the chocolates you used to see in the shops. We mean the hairy ape-like creature standing between 2-3.5m tall with large feet and much larger in general than humans. Like all myths and conspiracies it sounds a little unbelievable.

The story of the yowie has its roots in Aboriginal oral history and are known by different names in different states in Queensland they are often referred to as quinkin and joogabinna. Many discount the existence of the yowie considering it just folklore like the myth of Bigfoot.

John Green wrote of them "They are short, stout and of very muscular appearance. They are covered in thick black hair...Their hair and beards are long...They are completely naked...the stench of their body is unbearable...great hunters of the forests and jungles...They come and go without being seen. They can hide in the undergrowth in such a manner that one can be touched or struck without their person being visible. I am to wonder if these are the same people...who take people away when they dare enter the forests and jungles...the women made grunt-like expression during contact...the child hung to its mother on the breast in the manner of an ape. These were the Woningityan/Won-ingee-tyan - the shadow men creatures of the jungles and forests..."

Do you think he actually saw a Yowie? He describes them as short when they are usually considered tall? Anyone out there think they’ve seen a Yowie? John Green was based around the Sunshine Coast Hinterland….anyone come across any strange tracks around the Glasshouse Mountains?"

Allegedly related to the proven hoaxer Brett Green, or so he claims. Unfortunately all evidence on any subject Green related, such as diaries, always seem to conveniently go missing or destroyed in fires (plural). Brett Green published these alleged diaries many years ago, which were and still are, heavily disputed and contradicted by local Historians.

Brett Green is simply a storyteller who doesn't let the truth bare too heavily on the subject of which he writes.

In an excerpt I read today from a 2011 article, it states: "The Green family historians assert that their ancestor could not have written the long, wordy accounts attributed to him because he was illiterate".

I was pretty sure it was the same guy, but thanks for verifying, Dean. Still seems as if his 'records' are held in some regard, but then the Archives wouldn't necessarily have any idea of the true story, so I like to think they simply believed what they had archived. ;)

Regardless, very happy to see them putting Yowie history (ahem) out there in the public forum of Facebook, and raising awareness and perhaps bringing more folks forward with their own experiences.
