so true... in Germany and some other countries anyone who questions the holocaust goes to prison.

One of my friends, who studied architecture, and also interested in history/politics etc told me one thing I believe it answers OP's question perfectly:

In any country, at any period, whoever builds the biggest buildings is the de facto ruler.

So I believe, in western countries, presidents are not the rulers.

In Saudi Arabia, the Royalty no doubt.

And in history, when churches were all tall and large?
