As a kid I watched every cartoon I came across and read every comic but Transformers, Voltron, Masters of the Universe, etc really rubbed me up the wrong way.

And with comics superhero c**p did too.
Cartoons and comics were supposed to be funny, not violent and really bad animation like the Japanese studios of the 80's produced.

As an adult (and professional cartoonist) I can now appreciate the art more in the 'serious' comics (still won't waste my time reading them though, Star Wars and other non-superhero comics being the exception) but those old 80's animated 'serious' shows still annoy me. Give me Hannah Barbara (Flinstones, Jetsons, Wacky Races, Yogi Bear, etc) EVERY time over 'Jap c**p' cartoons.

Even today, if a student asks me to teach them how to draw Manga, I cringe.
"Pukemon? Wouldn't you prefer to draw a Minion?"

I will hasten to add... I DO appreciate the design engenuity behind Transformers. It must take some thought to create a toy that changes from a believable (sort of) robot to a car, or a truck, etc.

Obviously, politicians are shape shifters and make that transformation quite easily and regularly.

30 years ago, i guess designers are relying on pen and paper. So when you see carton and then bought the toy home, you would find the toys were always not possible to resemble like cartoon.

However, today with computer graphic design, the possibility is almost infinite. You will see cars, jets, tanks are transforming to exactly what they look like in cartoon.

The cartoons you are referring to were commissioned and made by the toy company to sell their toys.
The concept was extremely successful for the company.
Even as a child I felt like I was being 'sold' and the poor quality of the animation and the storylines made me not watch them. This despite the fact there was very little to watch... which peed me off even more for I felt better shows were dropped in favour of the 'Jap-c**p' cartoons.

Some of my friends were sucked into it and loved them all, wanting to watch them when staying over, but I preferred to not watch anything if Transformers, MOTU, etc was all that was on.
