“According to Blavatsky, five root races have so far appeared on the planet, with two more yet to come. Each root race has seven ‘sub-races,’ and each sub-race has seven ‘branch races.’ (Seven is a mystical number for theosophists.) The first root race, which lived somewhere around the North Pole, was a race of ‘fire mist’ people – ethereal and invisible. The Second Root Race inhabited northern Asia. They had astral bodies on the borderline of visibility. At first, they propagated by a kind of fission, but eventually this evolved into sexual reproduction after passing through a stage in which both sexes were united in each individual. The Third Root Race lived on Lemuria. They were ape-like giants with corporeal bodies that slowly developed into forms much like modern man. Lemuria was submerged in a great convulsion, but not before a sub-race had migrated to Atlantis to begin the Fourth Root Race.”

There you go, Sasquatch come from the submerged continent of Lemuria!

I guess anything is possible, yet I like to take a wider view and don't dismiss other possibilities for them too.

I tend to think of all religious/mystical/folkloric explanations for this stuff as an early attempt to explain concepts such as the origin of life and the natural forces that cause things to change slowly over the course of time (what we'd call evolution).

I don't doubt that Helena Blavatsky was sincere in her beliefs - but I don't take anything she wrote literally. Like many other psychics/spiritualists of her era she was attempting to connect philosophy and mysticism in what would've been viewed than as an 'Oriental' type of way in defiance of the Western spiritual tradition of the Christian Church. Similar ideas occur in other movements apart from her version of Theosophy; the Druids, Wiccans, and Thelemites (among numerous others) have all wanted to hark back to a shamanic tradition of 'revealed knowledge' that predates Christianity. They all claim that there is some fundamental thread that ties all these ancient traditions together and formulate similar arguments regarding ancient 'spiritual masters' or 'ancestral spirits' whom they commune with whilst in trances, etc. They all basically champion Shamanic practice as being more important than what we'd call 'organised religion'.

I agree that it's clear there have been numerous types of creatures similar to us throughout history. The fossil record shows this, as does anecdotal evidence in the form of legend and folklore. I also agree with the idea that these ancient myths and legends point us towards the presence of beings that were similar to, but also different from, our own ancestors. As far as people made of fire or smoke or whatever...these are stories that have been handed down through many generations and re-translated so many times that their original nuance and detail is long gone. The Dogon people have the Nommos who came from another planet and were amphibious. Some traditions have Angels made of fire. These are all comparable stories that indicate, I think, that other races apart from our own once existed and our ancestors were well aware of them, and well aware that they were different from themselves.
