Re: Large area of flattened grass at highest peak on the mountain!!!
Thanks for those Missm4mi, I too have found large areas of flattened grass on the cattle property I frequent, but in my case the areas are daybed areas for kangaroos. Usually on the edge of bush areas giving them a view of the paddock, and a quick escape to the thicket. We see them there resting during the day.
Hair samples might help you point out the animal responsible.
Keep up the diligent work-well done.

Roos. We have exactly the same resting areas here. They always pick a good vantage point

That really isn't typical of a regular Roo rest !
Usually they are found under low tree branches and are normally more of a rounder shape due to the way they spread themselves out on the ground ???

Re: Large area of flattened grass at highest peak on the mountain!!!
I've never seen a "roo rest" in the grasses before, but have quite often seen roos resting under lower hanging foliage in coastal dune areas etc and the impressions they tend to leave are more rounded in appearance in my observations.
My question is if it is a hairy one, would they tend to lay in a position like that.....all sprawled out......or would they tend to be more foetal position to conceal their position?
Not knowing anything about them, and being a casual observer new to the field,I'm just trying to understand without trying to cause controversy etc
Nice pic though

Roo rests can take any shape. Best way to tell is to smell the grass and check out the ground for what the Americans call 'sign'...
It's hard to tell from the photo but the grass doesn't look flattened enough.

So your saying they poop in their nesting area or leave a smell? Any resting roos ive seen are under trees as a few members have pointed out. Not saying its yowie though. Could be anything. Should be some hair there though...Wolf wrote: Sat Aug 25, 2018 11:47 am Roo rests can take any shape. Re: Large area of flattened grass at highest peak on the mountain!!!
Yes, and yes. We had Roos who would rest up in the long grass on the property we were on just outside Ormeau. If you get down low you can definitely smell them. All animals leave a smell after lying in the one spot, and there was always roo poo in the grass.Yowie bait wrote: Sat Aug 25, 2018 12:18 pmSo your saying they poop in their nesting area or leave a smell? But as I said, the grass in the photo does not appear flattened enough for a 'roo rest', or any other animal lying there. Something has obviously been there moving around and crushing it down, but not lying on it IMHO. And it looks too dry for an older resting spot where the grass has had time to pop back up (which it does do when green) perhaps it is an older spot that got damaged when it was not so dry?... Just my ten cents worth...

1)no number 2's sighted.
2)no scent detected.
I was pretty close to the ground when placing tape measure for measurements. next walk day we will be passing this location and we will take another look around and update this post if I find anything interesting. directly below the flattened grass area were some pretty big boulders I was standing on top of one to take the photograph. the top of that boulder was level with the flattened grass then it is a steep decent into a valley, lots of large boulders in this area.

Ive seen pigs ( domestic) rising up out of the long grass. They leave a large flat spot as well.Wolf wrote: Sat Aug 25, 2018 9:20 pmYes, and yes. Re: Large area of flattened grass at highest peak on the mountain!!!
It really is a Roo Rest. We have them here, where I live. Any day of the week you can see actual Roos actually resting in long grass. They have a broad swathe of such grass near the top of a hill, and it affords them a view of an open valley (their preferred grazing area), while keeping them somewhat hidden.AL Pitman wrote: Fri Aug 24, 2018 12:36 pm That really isn't typical of a regular Roo rest !

Also, you cannot determine anything by the size or shape of the rest ... sometimes Roos will rest side by side, or several to one patch. Nor that it's out in the open. They seek 'sunny' rests in winter, and shaded rests in summer. Just like us

Re: Large area of flattened grass at highest peak on the mountain!!!
Missm4mi... this is just an observation, but some of your replies seem to be both sarcastic and aimed to get an argumentative response, which is likely to affect the way others respond to your posts.
I'm not sure how much that will help you to continue to get serious and considered replies from other members. Most folks here are keen to add their experience and observations (some more diplomatically than others, I agree), but if you are going to arc up at people's comments here, and post image macros in response to perceived issues with people contributing to your threads, it comes across in a negative light, to me, anyway.
Unless you were to find IDENTIFIABLE hair/fur in the area, there's no real way of telling what creature flattened the grass, and that's a fact.
Shooting people's suggestions and comments down isn't doing your reputation here any favours. If you're aiming for humour, the use of emojis such as
and >:( (available to your right when posting) will prevent us getting the wrong ideas. That's why they were invented.
I am going to assume you've been in this game for a while, or have had a seriously steep learning curve since you joined us at AYR, and that's got to be a good thing, but I don't see how being impatient with other members of this forum when they suggest other options seriously will help you further.
I'm a peacekeeper by nature, but hey, if you object to me pointing this out, I think you may be too thin skinned to be in this gig. If you can't debate without aggression or antagonism, don't be surprised if people just stop commenting.
I have enjoyed the way you present your data, measurements, observations, and photos, so please keep doing so. I believe you may be in an area that is not frequented by too many people, and the whole Toowoomba area is mountainous and well covered in various types of vegetation, which I would think makes it a good possible location for Hairy Folk activity. Your dogs might give you an indication of what's around, and if they look or behave in an anxious or distressed manner, I too would get the hell out of Dodge. It might be wild/feral dogs or it might be something a lot larger. I hope you can continue to find more out there that gives you cause for thought, and to share with us here. All the best,
Shazz

Re: Large area of flattened grass at highest peak on the mountain!!!
It's not about making friends, it's about making unnecessary drama and perhaps making yourself a subject of discussion by other forum members.
I don't really give a rats about your opinions directed at me, but I'm not the only person on this forum, and we are tired of drama where there doesn't need to be any. It's up to you how you conduct yourself. Whether you are adult enough to take constructive criticism is another matter entirely.
People who seem to over-react at innocuous comments usually flounce off when they find it gets them nowhere. If you are genuinely interested in the same things we all are here, acknowledging that perhaps you don't know everything and putting an end to assuming every thing you see, record, find evidence of, and post here, can be 100% exclusively attributed to a Hairy will ensure you get the most out of your time here. There are some incredibly experienced members here who are not here to shout you down, or engage you in conversational combat, and yet here you are, getting aggro when people politely suggest other answers to the photographs posted.
I'm not here to make enemies, but neither am I willing to let disruptive behaviour go unchallenged. I've done it before, and have no qualms about doing so to spare other less eloquent (and perhaps polite) forum members the chore. I've been here a long time, I've seen it all and I'm not the only one. Help the members help YOU get the most out of the information held in their experience and memory banks, please.

I have had a few private messages with enquiries about my research and photographs - asking permissions to use my research data at conferences and to collaborate my finds with other researchers own work. from now on I will only interact with these professionals through private message. I will be a fencesitter on this forum and I will sit back and watch this circus from the sideline. I have only been in the game since the start of May this year (2018) and I am pleased with my finds considering I haven't really gone out of my way too much to see what I have. also, I would rather invest my time in a worthwhile and rewarding project - caring for and rehabilitating native wildlife within the local area. over and out.

If you're going to get all high and mighty and lecture someone (and yes, I'm guilty myself here), you need to expect to be possibly responded to in a manner you perhaps don't appreciate . . .Shazzoir wrote: Thu Aug 30, 2018 1:42 pm It's not about making friends, it's about making unnecessary drama and perhaps making yourself a subject of discussion by other forum members.

If I have been too harsh in my comments, then I accept full responsibility for that, Greg.
Snarky comments aimed at people who are trying to help just go against the grain with me, but from now on, I'll let people fight their own battles.
Someone who has admitted to only started looking into cryptozoology since May who replies sarcastically to others here who have much to contribute in the way of discussion is never going to sit well with me. If others wish to tolerate it, then good for them, let the disrespect flow. Apologies for any disruption my words have caused, people.

massive overreaction and such long windedness on a subject not even concerning you! if you put as much energy into staying on topic and posting something of interest. i.e. research , data collection etc. this forum would be a better place.

Missm , if you cant take the heat stay out of the kitchen , again as soon as people have an opinion that differs from
yours you go on the offensive , maybe instead of being a smart a---e you should take the advice that is being offered to you
This is becoming a habit on your part , nobody is questioning the photos etc just giving a different perspective
As has been said many times ' not everything that happens in the bush is hairy '
Now take a breath , smile and continue on your research path
