Fraser Coast region - unusual lack of wildlife

Has there been any more recent sightings around the East Gympie or Fraser Coast (Queensland) regions? I know there have been past sightings around east Gympie, Tin Can Bay and Mt Wolvi but do not recall any more recent sightings.

I am going to Poona (about half way between Gympie and Maryborough on the Cooloola Coast Road - all forest) Thursday for a long weekend to have a look around the area. We have a sought of residence at Poona which I will use as a base. We go up there approximately every second weekend.

The forest area is abound with wild horses, wild dogs and Australian fauna (usually heaps of roos). However, over the last month and a half I have not seen any of the above animals bar the odd roo on the side of the road. This is strange because there are usually many by the roadside and more in the forest areas. I am going up early (Thursday) to see a mate who has the contract for culling feral animals in the forestry areas - just to check if a major cull has occurred.

To me, it seems strange that I have not even seen the few wild dogs that hang around the Poona township where they are fed by the locals. Been going there for over 3 years (on and off) and lived there for 8 months - never been present when no animals are on display. I'm not saying it is a hairy one, but if the animals weren't culled, there is some reason why they have moved on, etc. I won't be going too far, might try a few tree knocks and see if I get a response.

Have anyone else noticed this before, where animals have moved on. Anything else I should be on the look out for. Trust me, I won't be going in at night or too far in the forest or scrub - will be on my own and after reading the various sightings I won't be venturing far from my vehicle.

Also, can someone provide a link to valid audio of a hairy one yell? I have heard sounds in the distance from my location at Poona - would like to hear a sound before I comment (not sure if ones, or which ones on the internet are valid sounds).

I had assumed that shooters had been controlling the roo numbers around my place in NSW, central tablelands. I hadn't seen more than 5 at any time. But last month there were nearly a hundred in one 20acre paddock. So had they gone somewhere, then came back. Or was it another migrating mob.?
As for sounds, vocalisations, check that feral cattle are not a problem in the area. There are feral cattle in some QLD national parks. Google might help.

Thanks for reply hillbilly. Will check re cattle, but over the last 3 odd years I have never seen any. Forest was usually full of horses and wild dogs. Know of roos migrating but not sure in regards to the horses and dogs, they have always been around that area and in numbers - generally heaps of food for both most of year round. I am assuming a major cull but will check this also.

I've heard of the animals moving before . We put it down to water , no rain . Is it dry up there , thought you guys were getting plenty of wet weather .
As for the hairy man , I believe that the animals won't move for them but more like avoid them .

Here's a link to my audio page . https://www.farsouthcoasthominoideviden ... audio.html
I can assure you that all recordings are valid , I collected them myself . I can't however prove that the recordings are yowie related but I'd bet my last dollar that they are . Please let us know what you think .

Always amazed with Rustys audios.
Being an avid enduro rider and frequently getting out into the deep bush at Watagans and Newnes, I have also noticed a peculiar lack of wildlife.
But this isnt just recent its all the time. Never seen a Roo or Wallaby in either forest.
The only exception is Menai and in particular because its a very small place I always see at least 3 Roos or swamp Wallabies a Water Monitor or some kind of ground dwelling fowl all black.
Maybe they only come out at night.

The current drought afflicting vast amounts of the country is a big factor too. You'd be amazed at the speed at which a mob of roos seemingly rooted to a spot for generations will vanish once water becomes scarce. And reappear years later when it breaks.

Many thanks for the replies. The interesting thing is that there is still plenty of water in the area with some creeks still flowing - been told by locals previously that one creek is spring fed. We've had some rain on and off along the coastal regions and there is still green grass by the roadsides. Given roos move about a fair bit, but what I found strange was the lack of wild horses and dogs in the area (its usually full of them). Even when full in drought (like when I was living there last year) you still would see horses and the wild dogs around. However, in regards to the feral animals, there could have been a major cull - so not getting too excited! There are obviously reasons for the lack of numbers.
Rusty, great website - will have to wait to this evening or later to listen to audio - too busy at work today and left my ear device at home. Really interested to hear the audio (will definitely let you know.

There's a miscellaneous section at the bottom of the audio page , there's an Aaaargh vocalisation which will be the closest to yelling . :)

In relation to my original post relating to a distinct lack of animals along the Cooloola Coast Road area (Fraser Coast, Qld). Issue partly solved. Leaving the Cooloola Coast Road and taking the road to Poona, I caught a glimpse of a black mass on the right side of the road (it was a horse) and suddenly one ran across in front of me from the left. Nearly hit it, poor dogs in the back nearly became front seat drivers. All I heard/felt was thump thump - them hitting the back of my seat as I braked!

Saw my mate who does most of the feral animal culling and he stated that yes they were setting baits to cull the wild dogs. They have to place baits at least 3 km's from the nearest home/dwelling, so may explain absence of dogs in Poona area. Roos well as discussed in other posts in this forum, it could be a case of them just moving on for a while.

Because of a family issue I did not have as much time up there as I would have liked. No answers to wood knocks.
