The Pilliga Yowie

One night my ex hubby & I were going to my brothers for Xmas, and it's and 11 hour drive from home to his place. Because we were going to be travelling all night ( we lefted straight after wheat harvest) we decided to go Narrabri / Coonabarabran way which it's on the Newell Hwy straight through the scrub due to the kangaroos on the road. It's safer to drive on sealed roads at night instead of unsealed roads.
We were in my Toyota Landcruiser wagon 4w4, big bull bar on front, side rails because I am always hitting Roos & feral pigs. We're driving down the road & up in front my spotlights (on the bull bar, extremely powerful) started to light up something in the middle of the highway, I slowed down a bit because I'm usually sitting on 120km/ hour to make it get off the road. As we were getting closer to it, both my ex & myself thought it was a big feral bore pig eating roadkill as we were getting closer to it probably about 50 metres away from it, we started to see it really well as my spotlights at that distance lit it up like it was daylight, next thing the bloody feral bore pig looked straight at us, stood up on 2 legs then bent down and picked up the roadkill by its tail and started to half carry / half drag it off the side of the road.
As soon as it stood up we both knew straight away that it's was no bloody pig, it was the Pilliga Yowie. I slammed on the brakes and we watched it walk across the bitumen onto the dirt and into the scrub, there's probably 10 mts of cleared scrub from bitumen into the trees etc. We just sat there for about a minute thinking "are you f'n kidding me, did we just see that? "
Well that definitely was enough for me but no, my ex wanted to drive right up to where we saw it walk into the scrub, straight past a tree under a limb to get a idea how tall it was. So I drove up to the spot of the roadkill, pulled onto the edge of the bitumen & refused to go in towards that scrub any further. He got out & took a measurement of how tall he would have been as his head just past under that limb.
The Yowie is about 9 foot tall, about 450-500 kilos, solid build, unusual long arms, dark brown / black long hair all over, walks on 2 feet just like a man. It's like an ape features but it looks like it has a long fringe of hair all over face. I could see the shape of his face - eyes, nose, mouth, teeth but the rest was all long hair over him. His hands & feet were all hairy on the backs of them. His strides were bigger than a mans walking strides.
He just stood up looked at us front on, turned & bent down, picked up the roo or wallaby, then turned and walked off into the scrub. When he walked off into the scrub we had a side profile of him. It all took about 2 minutes from the time we first saw him bent down to the time he walked under the limb. He was not scared of us at all.
I have & still do spend a lot of time in the Pilliga area as my relatives live in the community. Nothing scares me much BUT I refuse to go into the scrub at night for any reason, the only part I will go at night is on the Newell Hwy & that's it and I swear if I ever get a flat at night on that highway I will continue to drive that vehicle on its rim until I either get to Narrabri or Coonabarabran. There is nothing that will make me stop the wagon on that highway at night.
I will continue to go into any part of the scrub during the day, not a problem, BUT come night fall, I'm outta there.

Interesting account of your sighting. Thank you for sharing it with us.
You said it took two minutes roughly from when you first saw it stand up to it disappearing in the woodline. I'm picturing in my head from what you wrote that it spent a good deal of that time on the dirt clearing between the road and the woods. But its possible im imagining it all wrong and that it stood up and stared at you for quite some time as it was next to the carcass instead before walking off. What was it doing during that period of time? You said it had no fear of your vehicle. Was it taking a few strides and pausing looking back at you? Did it go straight into the woods or stop and observe your ute to see what your intentions were perhaps. Just wanted to see if you could give us more details about that part of the sighting.
Also, any further details of the creatures eyes, nose, and teeth. Was there any reflection or eyeshine from the spotlight? The nose was it human like or more gorilla like with the nostrils facing out and not downturned? The teeth what were they like? Large canines or almost human like?
Sorry for all the questions just very curious to hear more. Its not often people get the opportunity to witness one for so long and every little detail we can learn about the creature helps the researchers and any one who is interested in the topic.

Hi bassplr,
We were heading south so from when we 1st notice something in middle of road that's where the minutes started. It first looked like a black bore pig standing with its side profile to us eating a roo or wallaby. It's head was pointing east, the backside pointing west. You could see the outline of a carcass in front of its head - so imagine looking at a pig eating side on.
It then turned its head took at us - at that time we still thought it was a big bore. It then stood & like turned as it was standing up & looked at us front on. That's when I slammed on the brakes. It then slightly turned & bent down to grab carcass dragging & walking off the road heading in a west direction. We watched it walk into the scrub, once it got to the scrub couldn't see it after that.
My spotties lit up the road & side of road. My wagon was stopped in the middle road, say straight down the middle of wagon was straight over middle,of centre line of road. When it started walking off, I steered a little to the right just taking my foot off brake a couple of feet forward so we could see to the scrub line, once it past the scrub line we couldn't see it anymore. I could barely see the left hand side of scrub. So when my ex jumped out I was on the edge of bitumen on the wrong side of the road.
I can't tell you much about facial features as we could only see the eyes, nose, mouth outlines. I couldn't see ears because it looked like it had long hair.
So when we 1st saw something on the road, to slowing down, to it looking at us, standing up , bent down, stood up again, walking off bitumen onto dirt, then into scrub passing tree under limb on the scrub line I would say definitely a good minute to minute & 1/2. It might have seem longer because we were shocked at what we were seeing but definitely a good minute & minute &1/2.
Now if that's not an Yowie, well there's certainly a big arse mate in a gorilla suit running around the scrub. I've lived on land my whole life, I go to Pilliga every year because family is out there. What we saw that night I have never seen in my life & nothing since. And I'm definitely not going into the scrub to look for it.

MrLittleFoot wanted to know date/month/year also and so would I. Also, knowing more closely where on the Newell Hwy the sighting occurred would be helpful.
Only ever driven the Newell during the day, travelling to the Warrumbungles.

Hi, thats a great encounter, couple of questions, How long ago was this, what year, month, also have any of your family seen or heard of any recent Yowie Sightings in & around the Pilliga??
Hi My Littlefoot
The sighting was Friday nite the 22 nd December 2017.
My family has always heard stories about the Yowie in the Pilliga scrub from truckies, farmers, Kamillaroi elders, pig chasers. My uncle born & bred in Pilliga was a truckie & he had an encounter with the Yowie back in the late 70s & early 80s, now he was a "tough man" & he had to change a trailer tyre whilst driving on the Newell. He said next thing he heard and almighty racket around the cab, growling & sounds of (his words) finger nails scraping along metal, he saw something big & black then it took off. It shook the hell out of him, so when he started driving again, he drove straight to mum & dads in Moree . In the morning they checked out the cab & they & I saw claw marks along the cab in the paint, & for the next 3 days he sat on our couch looking into space. I was just a kid back then but I've never seen my uncle so shook up.
. I'm close to a couple of elders who live in Pilliga & these men do not have one ounce of bullshit in them, they definitely will not go into the scrub at all because of the Yowie plus the believe there's dark spirits.
After I saw it, I spoke to Tommy (elder) about what we saw, and he definitely said that we saw a Yowie. Apart from my immediate family & Tommy, now you guys I haven't told anyone else what we saw because people think your crazy.
As I said I go out to Pilliga every year, this year I heard nothing maybe next year there might be a story.
I hope that helps Littlefoot.

Hey guys,
It was Friday nite 22nd December 2017.
Also I'm a farmer so no dash cam. Both my hubby & I were stunned, shocked - whatever you want to call it, just watching it to grab the mobile for a piccy. I now wish one of us did but when your actually in the moment watching it it's like we froze.

I have heard of stories of the dark spirits or bad spirits that the indigenous speak of, apparently they will call your name enticing you to follow into the bush some can mimic other sounds and people too? Tricksters, etc. who knows what the intention is?
I had a sighting of a Hairy man (yowie) just south of the Pilliga in the Goonoo Conservation area between Dubbo and Coonabarabran.
This one was not on the road but walking away from it as we passed by in the car.
Which is why I have a great interest in the surrounding areas.

Hi Dion,
I've heard the term "tricksters" before, each tribe / people have different names & interpretations for the dark spirits.
I think I know the road you are speaking about, a cousin of mine who grew up in Pilliga now lives in Dubbo & he is 20 odd yrs older then me. He might know something.
When I mention family members from Pilliga be aware there are 65 of us 1st cousins. My mum was 1 of 12. ( I guess there wasn't much to do in Pilliga when the sun went down.)
When was your sighting.

Your welcome at least on this site I won't get a million comments telling me I'm nuts.
Since a kid I always knew about the yowie & my thoughts were if it existed well so be it & if it didn't well so be it too.
Now I'm 110% convinced, sure, down right adamant that The Pilliga Yowie is alive & breathing.
And nothing under any circumstance at all will make me go into the scrub at night. I'll drive the Newell BUT WONT stop for anything.

Hi Dion,
When was your sighting.
M. Ed
Heres the story.
We were driving up from Melbourne to Byron Bay for a family holiday, I forget what year maybe 98-99. We had just passed through Dubbo and were heading to Coonabarabran for an overnighter before continuing to Byron Bay the next day. It was getting quite late in the day so we decided to take a short cut that would have cut the time dramaticly along Mendooran Road and through Goonoo state forest. Now called Goonoo Conservation Area I believe.
As I wasnt driving I decided to look for roos or wildlife out the back drivers seat window looking to my right. I thought it was the best opportunity to do so as it was on dusk, when most animals are on the move.
It was only after a few minutes that I got a strange sensation that something was out there in the bush on a number of occasions, a presence, one of these sensations was really odd however as I got the impression that whatever was out there was really big like over 12ft in height, and it was almost a feeling of don't come close I am big, It was like an energy that could be felt, very odd if you have never experienced it.
Anyway I thought all this was rather strange so it got my attention and it was on another occasion a few minutes later down this course of Rd that I saw one or what would be called/described as a Yowie.
It was about 30-40 metres away and would estimate 5 feet high and it was walking away from the Rd. Because of its height I remember thinking whats a kid doing out here on dusk walking around the bush? but really I knew it wasnt. Never saw a face, very wide shoulders little to no neck, long arms and a matted orangey-red hair which would have been about 10-20 cm in length. I would describe it as being a little hunched over in the way it walked as well, there's no way it could have been some kid, bit like the mind trying to comprehend what I am seeing if you know what I mean.
Funnily enough I forgot about the sighting/experience for a number of years, god knows why you would think an experience like that would be etched in your memory.
It was only accidentally visiting this Website/Forum years later that my memory came flooding back and I remembered the experience.
Also, same holiday I was at the top of the Mount Warning and heard branches being broken and birds going off down below. No way a person could have been doing it as it wasn't around the main path area, It didnt register that that could have been Yowie until years later.
They are out there.

The Mendooran Road (and isn't Mendooran township itself the a***-end of the Universe?) - I use that (again, not at night) travelling to Coonabarabran and the Warrumbungles when taking the Blue Mountains route from Sydney.

Correct its a small town, the first you come to after leaving Dubbo heading along Mendooran rd, from memory I think there is a pub and thats about it, been a while since I passed through.
I have been back to Goonoo Conservation area once since my sighting, was planning on camping there and doing a night investigation but it was bucketing down with rain, so no hope of hearing anything nor seeing much, I think the only thing we would have come away with that night would be a cold.

I will continue to go into any part of the scrub during the day, not a problem,
BUT come night fall, I'm outta there.

Hi My Littlefoot,
Sorry I haven't replied for a while - been busy.
In regards to scratch marks of my uncles truck photos, I don't know (probably not) as back then I was a kid & not really interested in what had happened, just getting out in the bush playing with friends etc.
My uncle & father are now dead & mum doesn't remember but she also thinks no.
The only thing I thought weird was my uncle personality, he was always "life of the party", always laughing, loud, big personality BUT this time at home he was as quite as a church mouse. I've never seen him that way before or after since that time.
