When going researching is it better to let them know that you know they’re there?

Are you more likely to encounter yowies if you go into the bush as an oblivious bumbling human or as a yowie aware researcher?
For example, I’ve done wood knocks when entering and leaving an area when I’ve heard wood knocks on approach. It’s a “protocol”.
Now my question is, does this make them more or less anxious? Is that better or worse for research outcomes?
I suppose the answer to these questions is “depends on the objective”.
