West side of the Grampians

Unread post by Austral »

Hi all , did a bit of researching and camping on the very wild side of the mountain . We followed a nice little creek up hill with no sign of human activity anywhere along the bank . We were just following game trails.

Then suddenly we found a patch of tree breaks which were very fresh and the place was eerie to. I followed a track to the creek to look for prints but only found roo and cat tracks.
Then on the way out from the creek I went a different way and come across a stick structure and not a single stick had been cut. This place is not somewhere most people could get to. We continued into a very steep climb and then come across black fella hand prints on the rock face which was awesome to find
as my son's girlfriend is part Aboriginal and was with us.
Anyway, yowie related or not ( I think it is ) the photos are very interesting.

Gday Austral

Thanks for sharing those photo's, the Grampians are such a beautiful place, I have been there once only as a young child and remember it being great place for walking/hiking and having awesome scenery.

In regards to the tree breaks you found hard to say if it was Yowie related or not, in my opinion it most probably just wind damage as it looks like the trees that have broken are all Acacia's which have a tendency to break under windy conditions and stress due to insects and grubs eating the wood. Having said that there was one photo of an Acacia that looked rather healthy that was split down the middle which may or may not be something? Just sharing some observations.

Also loving the aboriginal artwork find.

Again thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dion , possible wind damage . The only thing is that it was in one small area only . What do you recon about the sticks ?

Not to sure, is the area close to anywhere where you would have camps, boy scouts etc? maybe they were going to build something with all the sticks and ran out of time? or Parks and Wildlife collected them for some reason?

It wasn't near any camp. spots that I know of . The sticks were close to the tree breaks but away from the creek a bit as you can sèe its not as lush. Definitely no vehicle access for a couple of miles and no actual walk tracks but the trees were all very freshly broken ( most photos don't show this) and the sticks had been there a long time so who knows ?

Cheers Austral, I like to eliminate the most obvious or sometimes not so obvious options first before even considering Yowie.
