Columbian Yowie shot and photographed in early 1900's

Unread post by yowie_kid »

Hi Everyone,

My name is Scott and i am a new member with a keen intrest in yowies. I have been studying as much as possible any relevant information on yowies for about four years now after a trusted friend of mine told me of an encouter he and his brother had had while hunting several years earlier (another story another time).

While staying at a friends house i woke up early one morning and was killing some time, reading some books printed as a series by Time Life around the Late 70's or 80's. This series is all about paranormal and unexplained happenings all around the world. One of theses books in particular caught my eye "Mysterious Creatures." In this book is a chapter on the 'Hairy Man.'

A few pages in I am confronted with a photo which sent a shiver up my spine and still does every time i look at it. It is a very clear picture of a 5 1/2 ft tall ape like creature (looks a lot like a giant Gibbon) which has been propped up with a stick under the chin sitting on a fuel crate. it has very long arms in comparison to its body. The picture is so clear you can even see its shriveled up wedding tackle between its legs (the bastard put me to shame too.)

The story printed with it goes something like this (im a little hazy cause i havent seen it for a while but this is pretty spot on) A group of swedish/swiss explorer/scientist/botanist type people and there party were on an expedition deep in columbian rainforest in around 1902-08, when for a day or a night (a length of time anyway) they were continually harassed by 2 large ape like creatures. they shot and killed one and took photos of it and left its body and continued on. they were amazed as the largest primate in south america was known to be around 2ft smaller. the size was later confirmed by someone by refering to the fuel crate it was propped up on.

Has anyone seen this or know anything about it?

Next time im at my mates house i will get the exacts of the book and the dates and the story and if i can acess a scanner will post the article up.

The photo on your Avatar was taken in 1995 by a Park Ranger in a location near Tacoma. He handed the pictures on to Cliff Crook (BF Researcher), who I used to correspond with regularly during the 90's. According to Cliff in emails to me, the Ranger heard a lot of splashing in a water hole and went to investigate.

Well......, there it was and he calmly took some pictures.

My problem with that, is it's rather hard for me to fathom how someone with no experience with these creatures can maintain enough calmness to stand there with a steady hand, preparing the camera ready for some great shots and tell it to say 'Cheese' (No, he didn't say Cheese - well, he may have. I didn't ask. Probably should have asked), while being screamed at in a rather unpleasant manner. There were little to no ripples in the water (considering it was 'splashing around' at the time), AND the scale looks all wrong. When taking in the size of the reeds and surroundings, it looks like a miniature placed in water .

But...... Cliff's a nice guy and he's always maintained it to be real.

I have a problem with it personally, however it's always easy to pick isn't it?

Loy's ape is covered in Bernard Heuvelman's book 'On the Trail of Unknown Animals'. I seem to remember from the description it was most likely a giant species of Howler monkey rather than an ape.
Certainly very interesting though.
