Min min light stories

Unread post by Poppy76 » Sun Aug 26, 2012 12:59 pm

Hi all,
Just thought I would put out a couple of stories I have heard about min min lghts in the pilliga scrub area.
1. Some time in the early 80s a lady and her two children were travelling o a road through the scrub known as the western way somewhere near the woolybah junction they ran into car trouble and came to a holt on the side of the road. They had fallen asleep the lady awoke a couple of hours later to what she thought were car lights approaching, but the light was coming from out of the bush not down the road it came through the trees and rolled over the car bonnet she described it to be as large as a 200 ltr drum and to be bright like fire it then proceeded to disapear through the trees on the other side.
2. A stockman I know was out checking boundary fences on horse back and came across a cow birthing and having trouble so he stopped to pull the calf, time went by and night fell by the time he had headed for home. He noticed what he thought were car head lights headed for him. He claims that there was no noise the lights came sttaight at him then split either side of him then joined back up and continued down the road and disappeared.
Thes are a couple of stand outs, it seems there are many sightings in this area anyone else heard of anything similar?

I'm surprised that no one has started a thread with discussion on this. I never heard of such a thing, not in Texas in any case, and I have no idea what these lights could have been. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had or heard of such an experience.

Ella;

It's lovely to see you visiting again Ma'am! I see from your repsonse to the min min lights that you haven't heard of Marfa.... http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/onli ... cles/lxm01. It's another night-light mystery a bit closer to home for you.

Cheers

Hey mate,

Yeah for sure these stories of Min-Min lights have littered my childhood. With many friends and family being interstate truckers, stories would always come up in conversations either being followed or paralleled while driving. Along with many other odd out-back tales to tell.

Cheers

Mucho thankoes, Nopolys. I am going to have to Google the Marfa lights, as I had only vaguely heard of them. I'm dying to know just what this type of light could be. I have heard of some strange lights in the Big Thicket that were suggested to be gas of some sort. (taz) (ninja) (woot)

Where: Ghost Hill (Main Street), Hervey Bay QLD Aust
When: 26th Dec 2012 (just after boxing day) apprx. 12.45am

After a night visiting friends, driving home my partner and I took a shortcut over Ghost Hill heading back towards Maryborough. Before descending the hill we both saw bright lights (assuming they were 4wd spotlights) in the distance facing us. This hill has 2 dips at the bottom with 3 peaks (including the top) then goes flat with a cross road about 150m from the last peak (Chapel Rd). It has cane fields on all sides but at the time it was all freshly cut. Speed limit is 100kmph.

After going down the 1st dip and approaching the 2nd peak, we could still see the bright lights which were becoming blinding and closer. Going down the 2nd dip, we could notice lights at the top of the 3rd peak and about no more than 30m from approaching the top the lights disappeared. We had assumed they had turned off their high-beams/spotlights but there was no car in sight. We however could see faint red tailgate lights in the far distance heading in the same direction as us but no high-beams/spotlights in front of them.

Both of us stayed silent as we thought there was an explanation however could not find any signs of a vehicle driving towards us. We still had not spoke as we approached the cross road expecting a car down either road but again, no signs of high-beams or tailgate lights. After passing the cross road looking up ahead, noticed the tailgate lights had disappeared - we assumed the vehicle was about 1km ahead of us according to Google maps after investigating later. Also means the vehicle would've done a REALLY quick 3 point turn and had foot to floor in a high powered vehicle.

It was at this point my partner said, "did you find that weird?". I replied "yes" but continued to stay silent as my logic was trying to comprehend the event. No signs of dust with a car turning, no signs of other cars in all directions, and no lights on in the surrounding houses (not many in that area). Partner and I couldn't figure out any possible explanation after discussing it briefly in the car and again once arriving home.

Would love to hear a logical response and please feel free to look at Google Maps & street view.

Recently I saw a show called 'Aliens and Indians' on NITV, and there was one report form a Native American guy out hunting caribou who saw something which resembled the min min lights. He was a guy in his early 60's, and was embarrassed to talk about what he'd seen. One tribal elder, though, mentioned that there were many old stories about orbs and strange lights in that area going back many generations. It was interesting.

It could be something like ball lightning/St. Elmo's fire - an atmospheric discharge, influenced by magnetic fields and so on.

Indians and Aliens on NITV really is a good show - it's interesting to see a different context for all these types of reports. It's the only show I look up on "SBS On Demand" if I miss it.

Apparently my Grandfather has seen the Min Min light's in the Min Min area. May try to interview him about his experience.

ok - so these are the stories and they are fascinating...
But lets discuss what people think these might be.

Here are my thoughts.

If they are lights traveling down highways or bush tracks etc...they must be following roads as a guide.
They seem to travel close to the road or ground.
They are 9/10 times lights of varying colours and very bright like headlights in a car that can be extinguished at will.
They are silent.
They appear in various locations.

Sounds like either UFO's or Spirit Lights. I am leaning towards UFO's. There are many reports of UFO's behaving this way in other parts of the world. They seem to have intelligence...follow roads as guidance. Interested in cars and their occupants. Have the ability to divide into separate entities. Travel in groups.

Anyone else want to weigh in on what they might be? (cool)

Interesting phenomena, witnessed by many over last two centuries said follow people and appear to move with purpose eg coming close to people then moving away when they are approached.Reported by stockmen checking fences they float along the fence line.Witnessed by a lot of people these extraordinary lights are still being seen to this day. Many theories from methane/phosphorous to bioluminous algae, ghost orbs, fireflies and Ball lightning to name a few.Varying in size from golfball to basketball. My two cents.

I have seen these orbs that fit the description of the min min lights and they behaved much like Chris described. They were moving along in the bush some distance away, beside our car and travelled in an angle towards us and eventually crossed right in front of us as we drove along the newell hwy. They then bobbled off away into the bush on the other side of the road.

I saw them very well from the passengers side .They were brightly illuminated like round light bulbs bobbing along in the air, unattached to each other. They seemed to be independent of each other but grouped closely together.

I thought they were bicycle reflectors at first and when they crossed my mate said " they must be them fckn min min lights!"
Thats how i know they were min min lights..

I dont know what they are. Im inclined to think theyre spirit lights or some entity like they say but possible theyre alien craft also i suppose. Wouldve got a great look at us. There was a massive lightning storm much later that night but far away from there so ball lightning or another form of lightning is another more likely possibility maybe?

Hi Rusty2,

Interesting subject. I read a book on this whilst I was working out in the Channel Country near Min Min itself. I’ve no idea of the name of the book, sorry.
I thought the Min Mins were now known to be Barn Owls, obviously not.

Was speaking to a fella last week who worked on cattle stations in the 50s and 60s and spent a lot of time in the bush hunting and fishing etc.

Asked him if he ever saw anything weird. Only thing " weird" he saw was what he called " the min min lights" one night at a cattle station. He says it was one light as large as a truck headlight which showed up on the property one night.

He says it was coming towards them which really freaked them out so he shot at it but couldnt hit it! Sounds like it put quite a scare into them all. It hung round for awhile exploring the property and took off never to be seen again!

Interesting Yowie bait that you were travelling along the Newell Highway well known for being a Yowie hangout. It's well documented that strange lights, UFO's and orbs have been seen in the company of Yowies/Bigfoot and Bigfoot actually descending from them in the US. The report of strange lights appearing when a junjudee was seen on a farm (PODCAST: Child discovers juvenile Bigfoot on Australian farm) was another example. Wonder if the min-min lights you saw along the Newell Hwy may have been Yowies.

Many years ago I had two friends both unknown to each other travelling along two roads not that far apart in distance and both were followed by four red orbs for a couple of kilometres before the spheres eventually zoomed off into the night sky. Neither of these guys would have any beliefs or understanding of UFO's or the supernatural but after this encounter, they are more open to the subject.

Hi Senses. That was a creepy stratch of road at night. Anything could he out there!

The orbs seemed to me to be natural but moving intelligently and didn't seem to be craft of any type or yowies but i really don't know what they are?

They were circling each other which is why i initially thought it was pushbike reflectors.

The strangest thing to me now is how long i was able to watch them from the passenger side to my left and how when the orbs came out of the scrub and in front of the car, we were able to see them for so long before they took off into the scrub on the other side of the road.

Maybe they were keeping up with us even though they appeared to be moving slowly ? Weird!

That would have been terrifying for your mates. Heard of people getting chased by the orbs which sounds more of a ufo thing but who knows?

Thirty-plus years ago, my brother told me that he and a mate were travelling back to the Gold Coast . Can't remember where they'd been, but it might have been around Biloela. It was after dark, but fairly early, so maybe around 9 p.m. There was hardly any traffic. Then there was a light coming up behind them. It came up swiftly, but then seemed to dawdle instead of overtaking them as expected. My brother was driving and was becoming annoyed. He slowed down to encourage the light to overtake, but it remained behind. So he thought, bugger you then, and returned to his original speed. The light sped up accordingly, but still didn't overtake. My brother slowed way down, to more or less force the light to overtake. Next thing it was ahead of his car, but no tail-light and instead, the light was shining at them as if it was facing them, although it was travelling at the same speed forward as he was. He couldn't work it out so thought maybe it had a spotlight at the rear. So my brother sped up to get behind the light to show it how it felt to be shadowed. But next thing, the light appeared behind his car again and once more seemed content to sit behind them, but at a fair distance (maybe several car lengths behind) as before

Finally, my brother's patience ran out and he told his mate he was going to stop and fire a shot at whomever it was. He said he thought the light was either a motor bike or a car with only one working headlight

As my brother and his mate had been up in the bush doing some shooting, their rifles were in the boot. My brother intended to fire a warning shot in the air. But his mate, who was usually very quiet and calm, was against stopping or firing and was extremely agitated. He just wanted to push on and said to ignore the bike or whatever it was. A small town was a few miles ahead. He said they should pull over there and let the motor bike or one-eyed vehicle take off and find someone else to play with

Before they reached the town however, the light just disappeared

They pulled over at the town anyway and went into the pub. My brother admitted to me that he was rattled. And his mate was white faced

There were a handful of old-timers at the bar. My brother told them about the idiot who'd been playing with them and had slowed and sped up when he did. He didn't expect anyone to believe him when he said whoever had been messing with them had at one point managed to get around and then in front of them in an instant. He thought maybe the light had been someone on a motor bike who must have switched his headlight off as he overtook them and to do that the rider must have known the road like the back of his hand or been suicidal. But the old timers took it in their stride without surprise and said it must have been the min-min. When my brother asked what that was, they said it was just a light that came from nowhere and disappeared. It didn't hurt anyone although it scared them. No one knew what it was and quite a few people ended up in the pub looking shaken after experiencing it

Hi M-Glass

Thanks for sharing your brothers account I am sure it would rattle most people.

I have only heard of the min min lights being seen by one person I used to know, but for the life of me I cant remember where he said he and a mate saw them, I think it was Northern NSW somewhere he was quite adamant that it was a real phenomena and they were both quite shaken from the experience.

G’day M-Glass, that story reminds me of one my old man told me years ago. He was working on a station around Theodore in the late 60s, coming home late one night on the road from Theodore to Eidsvold. He noticed a set lights coming up quick behind thinking it was someone in a hurry he slowed down a bit to let them pass but the lights just kept pace with him. Speeding up then backing off when he did. It went on for a few miles until Dad got sick of it. He pulled the ute up and swung it around to face whoever was mucking around.
It wasn’t what he thought it was, the lights kept going straight though. Next day he asked around at the property he was working on, a few of the old hands did mention stories of min min lights in the area for years.
