A week's a long time in yowie politics...

Unread post by BillTheCat »

G'day All,

I just returned from some technology free holiday time and my, my, my... what a week it was here on the forum.

Oh well... this is me ignoring all of that c**p.

I spent a week down a Batemans Bay and whilst this was a week spent with my boys fishing and mountain biking I did manage to look into a few things 'yowie' whilst down there.

I spent a very nice, but strenuous, morning mountain biking along the forestry trails between Batemans Bay and Mogo (an area where yowie sightings have occurred in the 70s/80s). There's more scattered houses and farms there now but I was still in amongst some fairly dense bushland.

I also took my 4WD down a couple of very narrow side-tracks which dead-ended after a while.

On both these occasions I saw literally dozens of tree-breaks and leaning sticks. A number of these were directly beside the tracks but a number of them were also 10m or more off to the side of the tracks. I also saw what could be interpreted as a nest about 15m off the side of one track where it came to and end. Grass was flattened and, curiously, greener in the depression that was bolstered on on side by a log.

I didn't at any stage have that 'being watched' feeling or see or hear anythingsuspicious. Except for the mosquitoes. Never been swarmed like it before. Couldn't get my feet into the toe clips and get moving fast enough. Even then they were clinging on and draining me...

Admittedly, I was MTB'ing in the mid-morning and 4WD'ing in the afternoon so I wasn't expecting anything; although if you read about the B'Bay/Mogo encounters you'll see that a fair proportion of them occurred during light hours.

I also resisted the temptation to tie bacon strips to myself (as suggested by Topender). Mosquitoes were bad enough without adding flies to to the mix.

My brother-in-law was down at the same time and I took the opportunity to ask him about Jerangle as his family owns a sheep farm there (between Bredbo and the coast). He said he'd never heard of a yowie sighting in that area. I've been to the farm a few times and there is some very wild and secluded bushland up there. Given that my b-in-law is a mad trout angler, if anyone has had a yowie encounter up there it would be him. He has trapsed many, many miles of very rugged bush along the creek systems of this area.

He said they lose a number of lambs each year to dingoes and I'll trust his explanation as he goes out there and cleans them up.

All that said, I had a terrific week. Pity the forum went so sour... I thought everyone was starting to pull in the same direction; however, we've seen:
  • More banning
  • More skeptic bashing
Maybe there's something to 2012 after all?!?!?

I'm jealous Opus.

I used to live at Moruya and it would be great to be back down there at this time of the year.

Next time you're down that way you should try to get down to Tilba and about Yowies down there. I was a bit taken aback as to how matter-of-fact everyone was about them.

There's also a place called Yowrie that's worth checking out if you get time.

Great place to visit when it's not crawling with Yogies.

Hi Sticky/IWanna,

Thanks for the replies.

Sticky (2012): There was a short piece on Weekend Sunrise this morning about 2012 and a 'survivalist' web-site selling stuff. Stupid piece really... It did not look into the mayan calendar or any such. I simply concentrated on lightly ridiculing the website owner (to be expected I suppose). I didn't enjoy it. It was neither entertaining nor even-handed.

There was another piece on Sunrise earlier in the week where Kochie spoke to Karl Kruszelnicki. This was a much better piece that looked at the maths of the Mayan calendar. And no, I'm not turning from skeptic to believer... I'll go with the mathematical explanation of the Mayan long calendar which is that it's like an odemeter on a car. They simply ran out of left hand digits and decided to stop at that point, which is 2012. Too far into the future (for them) to bother to keep going.

IWanna: Yeah, it's a nice part of the world. I have been to Tilba before, although not this time. Next time I'm down that way I'll poke around in Tilba and see if I can get some of the local's stories. Haven't been to Yowrie though. There's an awful lot of state forest down that way.

One thing I can confirm. There was activity at Pooh Corner on the Clyde Mountain. There was plenty of stuffed toys in the little grotto. I've driven this road many, many times now and plenty of them at night. I can't imagine that there'll ever be another 'yowie crossing the road' encounter because a lot of the windy stretches have had high fences erected to trap falling debris. Rockslides have been reasonably frequent in the last couple of years.

Hey Sticky,

Perhaps IWanna has confused Yogies with Winnie The Poohs at Pooh's Corner...

Sorry guys.

A "Yogie" is slang term used on the south coast to refer to visitors from Canberra (sorry Opus).

Not sure how it all started. I think because all ACT number plates start with "Y" but who knows.

There used to be a road sign on the Clyde Mountain with "Yogies Go Home" spray painted on the back of it but I'm not sure how effective it was.

It seems the only people who know the term are locals or hard core surfies who don't like sharing waves.

heh i was down Bateman's myself over the weekend. Camped on Merry beach, then drove upto Braidwood and down to the 'big hole' in Deua np.

I've been thru Yowrie before on my way to Wadbilliga wilderness, and it does actually get its name from yowies, as there is rich yowie history on that whole stretch of coast. Tilba is just below Gulaga mountain, which was known as yowie turf to the traditional custodians (Yuin tribe). No yowieness for me on this trip, but i've been through Brooman on dusk before and i can tell u that just reeks of yowie! What's that pooh corner about? i drove past it twice.

I am in love with that stretch of coast. I will live there for sure one day, just as soon as i can figure out how to make a living there.

You could probably get a job as a Yogie liason officer.
