Noobs in the Blue Mountains

Unread post by NoPolys »

Just returned from a few days of enjoyment in the Blue Mountains.
Lots of track and sidewalk cruising which resulted in a stack of books from Megalong Books,
two of which have already been read and highly enjoyed.
Mike & Ruby, I am still reeling from the depth of information you folks have put between the covers,
and The Yowie is another amazing book. In fact, so good it has convinced a sceptical wife to change her
thinking sufficiently enough to indulge me on our walks to stop and take a picture
or two (that's what I tell her, in reality I'm trying to catch my breath and stop the leg trembles, lol).
On Wed 30 June we were in Wentworth Falls and decided to take the "Shortcut Track" from the Conservation Hut at the
end of Fletcher St. to the picnic & trailhead area at the end of Burrell Dr.
About halfway, at one of the tracks that branched off the main track we were on I saw a couple of things I am curious about.
There were three small sapling type trees or branches that had been put across the branch trail in a way that looked to me like what
I have seen in other pictures on the site. The bottom end of the branches were not sawn or chopped.
A few meters further on, there was a small tree about 5-6 cm's diameter that had been bent and broken (with a slight twist)
that looked like it was supposed to go across the main track. The break was about 500 mm high and was not a complete break.
Other trees next to this one are undamaged. As you can see in the pictures, the ground was hard with a leaf litter topping and not much of a chance for any footprints. This is very close to houses and is obviously a high use daytime track.
If you want a closer location, I have the coordinates.
Please tell me if I'm seeing the right stuff here, my tracking and bush skills are more used to the North American landscape
than to the Australian bush.

Thanks. And thanks again for the great information ya'll have here.

(back to lurk mode while I reread Austrailan Big Cats and The Yowie again)

Hi there NoPolys, spewing there is no footprints.

I know when I lived around that area, as kids we would play armies and rip up trees and break them over, I am not saying its kids or isn't but I suggest:
1. You can absail down into valleys where there isn't too much human activity
2. Or get a boat and put it in the nepean river at penrith and go up the river up two or three clicks and I wreckon you find something there.
Before 2008 I never believed in Yowies/big foot, but I must admit but when I did go up the nepean river when I was 18 to the second creek on the right. I camped there with a friend and soon as dark fell we heard sounds of rocks been thrown and it sound like five male koala grunting. My friend freaking out and I said its probably the koala's. So I let my dog off and everything quieten down and my dog return in an hour.
I could never explain that night or come to any other conclusions. I think to this day now, that could have been my first encouter with the yowies.
So if I was still living, there this is where I would go.

cheers Mr X

yeah Mr X, it seems a place the hairy friends like. there is a paddy palin's in katoomba btw.... they have plenty of rope too..... lol we also took a drive out to tablelands road, but only went to the hospital since the hard surface ends there and the car is a bit low for the good holes we saw.

And I did look for a place where someone tied a rope or something to do a pull down but didn't see anything, so I dunno.
cheers
