Sightings Database

Unread post by deadpool »

I'm going to be working on a sightings/encounters database, so its easier for everyone to see/collect info on sightings/type of, etc etc. It'll take awhile to collect all the necessary data, but once I have enough to say, cover the last 5 years (preferably actual encounters as opposed to footprints, etc), i'll post up a link where everyone can see it.

I'll be using Google Documents Spreadsheet so people can follow it as I update it. If people want to help, feel free - i'll be opening up a new Google account just for this so it doesn't impact on my current account (what with my emails and whatnot) - so others can contribute too. Basically, if you want to help, once i've set it up, i'll PM you the username/pass and just input as you see fit.

If anyone has any other ideas to add to this, feel free.

I've got the bigfoot sightings/encounters overlay on my Google Earth. Maybe I could make one for Australia? Or I could do both. Either/or suits me fine.

The idea is great, but…….

I don’t want to put a damper on it but have you run this past Dean first, I think this has been discussed before and from memory Dean is not really interested in it, (having a database on google) having said that I could be wrong.

Just thought I’d let you all know before we all get worked up about it.

If it was done you could only probably put in generalized sighting areas, specific locations would have to be omitted as they would probably come under a breach of trust from the witness in many circumstances, as most witnesses don't want to have people looking up this database and then have them traipsing around there property's. Just a thought on why its probably never been done.

I wasn't going to be putting in "Mrs Smith encountered a Yowie at 123 Fake st, Suburbia" kind of thing, more general locations. Springbrook, Kilcoy, etc etc. Or if its a national park, put in that. I totally respect peoples privacy and wouldn't add in names/addresses, etc. As you said, just general locations. If its in the middle of the bush and there was co-ord's available, i'd add in them maybe, depending on where they are/how dense the place is - i don't want to be responsible for people going missing out there :P

But as you said Chewy, i'll wait til Dean gets back so I can get the "final approval" before I officially start work on it.

I would really really like to take a snap shot of my area up here in Darwiny-Land, say an area of 150 kms by 150 kms, then somehow save it so i can then enter a dot or symbol at a particular spot...thus build up my data base and ee trends etc......no i'm not a nerdy, geeky compooter type person..just basic computer skills

cheers

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Go to maps.google.com - find your spot - right click, add a placemark - then you'll have an option to link. I'll give you an example.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 8&t=h&z=19 - one of the spots where I had an encounter with the LHM.

Then click the spot you marked, then click "save to" and you'll have your own little map file to reference back to whenever you want.

gday dp, i for one think its an idea that is long overdue and would be a valuable research tool. maybe in this election atmosphere we could have vote on something worthwhile? whether we have a sightings data base or not? may as well kill two birds with one stone (thumb up)

My local place I go to. As marked, I've put down the rough locations of the major encounters I've had over the years with the LHM.

Kind of thinking doing something along these lines with the database, if it comes to mapping. But only certain (not private property/people want their names withheld) places.

I can give more info on the encounters I've put on the map if anyone wants any additional info.
